President’s Message

Peñaranda as chairman, and Joan Zawacki and Joe Gilbert as members, to find candidates for Club President and Board of Directors, to be elected in April, 2017. A separate article on the nominations process is in this edition of the magazine. If you are asked to run, please consider doing so. Our Club exists and is successful because of the work of volunteers. Serving as President or Board member is the highest level of volunteering in this organization.

The Board just approved expanding multi-year memberships to include a 5-year option, and approved a small discount for those paying for multiple years. With the 3-year option, a person will save $10 and with the 5-year option he or she will save $20 over the one-year price. The same discounts will apply for couples/families. These rates will go into effect for persons joining or renewing starting May 1, 2017. Having multi-year memberships is good for the Club; it stabilizes membership and makes budgeting easier and more predictable.

The sailing program has a new leader. Long term program chair Patty Hagan is stepping down, effective January 1, 2017, and longtime sailing enthusiast and volunteer Mary Macaluso has agreed to take over. The Club is blessed to have such able leaders.

The Hilton Head tennis trip, which had been scheduled for October 8 to 15, had to be canceled. Hurricane Matthew hit the Island, and the Governor of South Carolina ordered an evacuation. No one was allowed to go on the Island. We saw pictures of severe flooding on the same street where our condos were. Our creative trip leader Karla Curran had a “Hurricane Matthew” party at her house for all the people that had signed up for the trip, including me. We had as good a time as possible under the circumstances. We expect to get a full refund from the realtor managing our condos and to refund our members.

The Club is doing well. Occasional bumps in the road are to be expected. I am very proud of this fine organization, as I hope all of you are.

Our Western and International ski trips are now 80% sold. If you are thinking of joining one, you better act quickly. We expect remaining openings to be snapped up soon. All trips, prices, and leaders are listed elsewhere in this magazine.

We recently asked our Policy Committee for a recommendation regarding transgender roommates. They expanded it to include people

who snore. The committee decided that it could not fine tune a policy to cover all situations, so the new policy states that the trip leader will confer with all parties involved and try to find an equitable solution, including single-supplement accommodations. The leader may ask for assistance from the program chair. The Board agreed this was about as well as we could do because of likely variations in circumstances, and it approved the language of the Policy Committee.

The Board approved a Nominating Committee consisting of Frank

The Board member is expected to be in contact with the program chair for whom he or she is liaison, to bring concerns of the program to the Board’s attention, and to bring the Board’s messages to the program chair. Annual screening of Warren Miller Entertainment’s latest epic adventures. Warren Miller and Ski Club of Washington, DC (SCWDC) presents Here, There & Everywhere. It’s been 67 years since ski-film pioneer Warren Miller picked up a camera to capture the wonder, the adventure, the humor, and the beauty that is skiing. Since that time, Warren Miller film crews have traveled the globe—from storied slopes to hidden, snow-covered corners—to celebrate all things snowsports. Their quest has taken powder-hungry filmgoers, well, Here, There & Everywhere—and this year continues that legacy. It starts with Here. Because that’s what every snow adventure is ultimately about: being really here—in the moment. In this 67th annual Warren Miller film, here is a freeski adventure with Ingrid Backstrom and Wendy Fisher in Crested Butte. It’s a powder day with the ski patrol for Kaylin Richardson, Matt Elliott, and Marcus Caston in Kicking Horse, B.C. And it’s every other stunning locale the film takes you, from the steeps of Squaw Valley to the big air at Fenway Park (yes, that Fenway Park). The film also journeys There, that place we dream about whenever we’re not in the mountains. It sweeps across the expanses of Alaska, between the backcountry yurts of Montana’s Glacier Country, and down the slopes of Deer Valley as we pay homage to the great Stein Eriksen. It spurs us toward adventure, toward the undeniable turns we’ll take this year, as soon as the snow begins to fall. And before we know it, we’ve been Everywhere—crossing Greenland by dog sled with Rob Kingwill and Seth Wescott, and following Jess McMillan and Grete Eliassen on a Swiss holiday aboard the Glacier Express. All along the way, Warren Miller himself spins tales as only Warren can do, reminding us that through the years, Warren Miller films have truly taken audiences Here, There & Everywhere.Get your Here, There & Everywhere tickets now at http://scwdc-wme2016.eventbrite.com.Tickets are $12 each. Discounted 4-packs and 6-packs of tickets are also available, so bring your family and friends and save! Show times on Sunday, November 13 are 12 p.m., 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the US Navy Memorial – Naval Heritage Center, 701 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC.

Continue (or start) a great fall tradition! Join SCWDC and fellow snow sports lovers, snow enthusiasts, and adrenaline seekers in the greater DC Metro area for an exclusive screening of this movie that captures breath-taking skiing and panoramic splendor.

Watch the movie on a ginormous 46’x16’ High Definition screen with state-of-the-art 7.1 digital surround sound (largest High Definition screen in the DC region) in an intimate 250-seat movie theater, from a plush, tilt-back seat with unobstructed view, in stadium-style seating. With goodies for every ticket holder and prize drawings at every screening, it is the perfect excuse to get together with your skiing and riding buddies to get stoked for the season ahead. Enjoy the free mini Ski and Snowboard Expo before or after the movie for winter sports, travel, sportswear, and equipment exhibits. Before or after the movie, take in the vibrant nightlife, restaurants, and museums in the bustling Penn Quarter Entertainment District. Beverages and snacks are available for purchase at the theater. The theater is conveniently located just steps from the Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter Metro Station. Or take advantage of the no meter fee for on-street parking on Sundays.
