EXAMINER’S NOTES

This question was more demanding than most of those in the first half of this paper. In this question required the simple facts that F = EQ in an electric field and F = mg in a gravitational field, but was also a synoptic test of resolving forces in an equilibrium situation. This was complicated by the need to choose an incorrect equation. More than a fifth of the candidates did not see that resolving along the direction of the thread would lead to the expression in distractor B being correct.
