Narcissism is the pursuit of gratification from vanity or egotistic admiration of one's own attributes. The term originated from the Greek mythology, where the young Narcissus fell in love with his own image reflected in a pool of water.

As stated in the Education Act 2011, any teacher at the school has the power to discipline a student for their behaviour outside of the school premises. As a community school we have a duty to ensure that our students conduct themselves in the same way as they would do so in school, as such, incidents reported or witnessed outside school will be dealt with in line with our behaviour policy.

Social networking has become a part of daily life for many of our students however, we are dealing with an increasing number of incidents in school which have stemmed from comments that have been made on social media. It is becoming increasingly common to hear stories in the media about the impact of bullying through social networking sites and the devastating effect this can have on young people and their families. Our first priority at Todmorden High School is that all our students feel safe every day at school. We have a zero tolerance policy of any form of bullying, including via social networking sites. In the same way that we will apply sanctions in school for incidents that have taken place within the community, we will also sanction students for incidents that have taken place online via social networking sites.

Letter dated 16th December 2014

Cyber Bullying?

Cyber Bullying is the term used to refer to bullying and harassment by

use of electronic devices such as e-mail, instant messaging, text

messages, blogs, mobile phones, pagers and websites.

Mobile Phones

Every time a mobile phone is switched on or off it sends a signal to the nearest mast, and

although the caller may have concealed their number from you, this is information which phone companies will have on their system and it’s easy for the police to find out the

culprit’s phone number.

The Law

Making anonymous or abusive phone calls is also a criminal offence under

section 43 of the Telecommunications Act 1984. Harassment by text

message, can be punishable by a prison sentence.

Mobile Phones

Using a mobile phone to take images of another person being assaulted, or taking

photos/video without permission is illegal. If this happens to you, you should contact the police. The person taking the images can be charged with assault and harassment if the

images are shown to other people.

The Internet

Sending abuse by email or posting it into a web board can be harassment and if this has

happened to you then your parents need to make a complaint to the police.

Even if the people posting this abuse do so using a false name, they can still be traced because

the firm which hosts the website will keep logs which detail where uploads have been made from. You and your parents can’t access this

information but the police can.

If you’re getting rude comments by instant messenger print them out and give them to your parents. They could contact the

police if the messages are threatening or if there are so many of them that they could be considered to be harassment. Change

your IM details and only give them to genuine friends.

What Can I Do?

• Do not reply to any offensive messages you get by email, mobile phone or IM.

• Do not give your details out

• Keep a copy of the abusive messages, and print if possible. (Screen capture – Ctrl/PrintScreen – paste into another document; save Instant Messages)

• Tell an adult – a parent, teacher etc• If necessary the police may become involved –

harassment is illegal!

Here's some things to think about:

• How you use social media and the regularity of this use;• Making sure that you understand how to keep yourselves

safe on social media by ensuring that your accounts are kept private and that they only interact with people you know;

• You must speak with an adult you trust if you are being bullied online;

• What you say and do on social media creates a permanent record and can potentially be seen by billions of people -you need to think before you post anything online.

Take a moment to think about what you look like in situations like this?Have you ever been ignored because someone one was on their phone? Have you ever ignored someone because you were more interested in a status?

Page 18: New 1 Presentations 2 Important Issuestodhigh.com/.../uploads/2014/11/20141217-Social-Media-2.pdf · 2015. 1. 14. · although your letter and CV were acceptable, your attitude

Facebook users in a study led by the University of Michigan wound up feeling worse about themselves after two weeks, and their moment-to-moment mood darkened the more they browsed the social medium. It didn't seem to matter how big their network was, how supportive they thought their friends were, nor why they went to Facebook in the first place.

How many of us turn to our phone when we are bored?Check our news feed, play a bit of candy crush, check our twitter.

Could you spend this time learning something new? Spending time with your friends?

In January last year a Gloucester A Level student wrote to his MP asking for work experience…

January 25th 2013

I'm sorry but I am turning down your request because although your letter and CV were acceptable, your attitude to your school and life in general on Twitter is inappropriate.

Please be aware that your entries on social media reflect on you, and that potential employers do take them into account when considering your interest. Responsibility does matter.

#3 Choose wisely who your “friends” are.

If they don’t know you, then they don’t have a right to see

your information.

Reflection

We need to understand that communication is better face-to-face. Phones have there uses but nothing beats a human interaction. You can express your feelings and you cannot edit what you want to say.

Give people your full attention and put your phone away! It can come across as rude and disinterested.

Be responsible online; think about what you write and how others will interpret it.
