A study from Harvard University suggests that animals have two internal

clocks. One of these is tuned to sunlight, the other to availability of food. When we are hungry,

our bodies will keep us awake to try to make us seek out food.

You can exploit this to help beat jet lag. Fast for 12 to 16 hours to reset your food-led body clock. When you eat next, your body will believe it is breakfast time and you can start afresh. Plan

ahead and you can hack your body into waking up when you need to.

It’s usually a good thing to listen to your body; but when you just entered a new time zone, your body doesn’t know what’s good for you anymore. So don’t go to bed before 10 pm, and get yourself out of it before 10 am on the first morning.

The view from your hotel-room window is probably superb. Enjoy it in daytime but use those heavy room-darkening shades to shut out light during the hours you plan to sleep. Also, lower the room’s temperature in time. Manipulating light and temperature manipulates your body’s clock and gives it a clear mandate to sleep.Reader's Digest

West is best, east is a beast. Generally speaking, people find that travelling east produces the worst jet lag. In both ways, staying relaxed is a good way to beat jet lag.

To keep calm, try to occupy your mind – even a good book can help. Play calming music through your head-phones, or try deep breathing exercises. Plan ahead, print all the documents and reservations you need, leave on time, skip the coffee; these simple tricks will help you to start feeling the flow. This will help you to calm down, sleep on the plane and arrive more relaxed than usual…

Spending time outdoors surrounded by natural light helps your body adjust to the shift in time zone as your body’s sleep-wake cycle is receptive to light cues. Also staying active helps your body to realize that things have changed around you. Walk that extra block around your hotel, look for that healthy supermarket and save your sleepiness for later…

Traveling means dehydrating. Flying, staying at the airport, waiting in a lobby. Everywhere you go, there is air-conditioning. So drinking at least 8 glasses (2 litres) of water is very advisable. It can be easy to forgo water when you’re traveling. You can’t bring it through security with you, it’s expensive when you’re in the airport, and it can’t always be easy to find once you’ve reached your destination. Make a concentrated effort to stay hydrated and jet lag will be much easier to overcome.

Leave the sleeping pills alone. They're not worth it. They will do nothing to assist the jetlag and will just leave you feeling fuzzy when you land. Saying that, on a long flight, you should try to sleep. How about a nice chamomile tea?

Melatonin, a natural protein widely available as an over-the-counter supplement, has been shown in some studies to help travelers fall asleep more easily at their destination. However the use of melatonin to fight jet lag is a controversial topic, and you should talk to your GP or chemist about posology and effects before buying it.

Leave your pills at home

Stripping you off any motivation is one of jet lag’s weapons of choice. When you land, you’ll probably feel like going to the gym about as much as chopping off your right foot; but pushing yourself to do it will revitalise your numb muscles after the flight, and give you more energy during the following days.If you’re not the sporty type, slip on some comfy shoes and go for a walk; it’s a great way to catch a first glimpse of the city you just landed in. The general rule is you should exercise at night if you travelled westwards, and in the morning if you travelled eastwards.

8. Sleep!

Once you're in the air, sleep as much as possible If you can sleep on the plane—even for a few hours—it makes a big difference. Earplugs and an eye mask will help.

When taking a red-eye to Europe, having breakfast immediately after waking up on the plane or once you get into the airport—even if not hungry— will definitely help

adjust your body to the idea that yes, it is now morning, even if your friends and family back home are sound asleep.
