Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are work- ers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being “God’s work.” But eve- rything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God’s work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is “God’s work?” “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent” (John 6:29). John 6:35

GOD’S WORK We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are work-ers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being “God’s work.” But eve-rything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God’s work. Missionary Cooperative Appeal St James Church: Bishop Gabriel Kumordji Aug. 8-9 The Mission Cooperation Appeal is one that helps unite the Archdiocese of Los Angeles with the Universal Church and to emanate mission aware-ness among the people of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The generous response, which is tradi-tional amongst the people of Los Angeles, is a re-flection of the ongoing awareness and concern for the peoples of the world. The reality of the material needs of the missions can never be overstated. Living in the United States it can be difficult to even imagine life with-out electricity, clean water and a social support system which exists to help people through diffi-cult times. The reality is that many people in the missions do not have clean water, they do not have homes, access to education, or opportunities to make changes in their lives. With a prayerful heart, please be generous for the Missionary Cooperative Appeal.

A Message from Archbishop José H. Gomez I would like to share with you two announcements made by the Holy See this week of great importance to our Archdiocese. First, Pope Fran-cis has accepted the retirement of Bishop Gerald Wilkerson, Auxiliary Bishop for the San Fernando Pastoral Region, upon reaching the retire-ment age for bishops, which is 75 years old. Bishop Wilkerson has been serving the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as a priest for 50 years and as a bishop since 1998. He has fulfilled his minis-try with zeal and dedication, and we are very grateful for the many things he has done for the people of God in the Archdiocese of Los An-geles. We are also grateful because we know that even in retirement, his health and energy will allow him to continue his ministry among us. The Holy Father has also named Msgr. Joseph V. Brennan and Msgr. David O’Connell from our Archdiocese along with Father Robert Bar-ron from the Archdiocese of Chicago as auxiliary bishops of the Archdi-ocese of Los Angeles. It is with great joy that we welcome the an-nouncement of our three new auxiliary bishops. I believe each of them will help us in our mission here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles — the beautiful mission we have of sharing the love of God and the mes-sage of Jesus Christ and promoting human dignity and mercy and justice in our society. The Archdiocese has created a special webpage with information on the announcement of our new auxiliary bishops, including the video of the presentation of the bishops-elect, their statements and special articles from The Tidings. I invite you to visit this page at http://archla.org/20150721.

Let Your Parish Be There For You Communion for Sick and Homebound Parishioners Please call the parish offices if you would like to receive Communion –we will make the arrangements with the Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick. Anointing of the Sick Please notify the parish office as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lord’s special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere, and as often as once a month. If someone should die with-out anointing, remember that the desire to receive is suffi-cient and the Lord cares! If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One Please call the parish offices. If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, our Bereavement Ministers will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors and offer you helpful guidelines that will aid in the Liturgical planning of the Mass or Me-morial Service. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you.

Safeguard the Children DID YOU KNOW? Review safety rules with your kids before traveling If your family goes on a trip this summer, chances are your children will be spending a lot of time on the road. It’s im-portant to keep safety a priority even as you take a break from your everyday lives! Remind your children to stay buck-led in the car, and to always be alert when taking bathroom and food breaks. Use the buddy system, or break into small groups, to keep everyone safe while you’re traveling. For more information and tips, visit: http://www.ots.ca.gov/OTS_and_Traffic_Safety/Traffic_Safety_Tips/summer_driving_tips.asp

Spreading the Good News! Thank to all the VBS camp-ers for raising funds for Operation Kid to Kid. With their generous donations, we were able to buy 39 kid-friendly, colorful bibles for the children in Thailand – written in the Thai language. Now that’s putting God’s word in the hands of children !

Recognizing the dignity and uniqueness of each student, our staff develops curricular programs and instructional activities that address the various learning styles of our students. St. James Elementary and Holy Redeemer Middle School promote in each child the skills neces-sary for life as a productive follower of Jesus Christ.

Philosophy St. James Elementary and Holy Redeemer Middle School form a family centered community based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. We recognize parents as the primary educators of their children and teachers as facilitators in the process of learning. We develop in each student a personal relationship with God and each other in a commitment to our Catholic faith through service and worship.
