Year 6 Student Visit to Moree Public SchoolOur 30 very excited Year 6 students returned from their Moree Excursion tired, but elated, last Friday. For five days, our students were hosted by Moree Public School, visiting Myall Creek, local farms, art galleries, performances and cultural centres in the Moree area. Students gained a meaningful insight into the Aboriginal history and culture of the Gamilaraay people, and how we can best support the farmers during the severe drought. Overall, the excursion was an insightful and memorable experience for both teachers and students.I was very proud to hear reports that our students displayed exemplary behaviour at all times. Thank you to Ms Genevieve Carnegie, Miss Steph Chapple and Mr David Brown who supervised the students during the excursion. There is more information and photos of the excursion on page 4 of this week’s Bay Times.OzTag Gala DayCongratulations to the Year 4, 5 and 6 students who participated in the OzTag Gala Day yesterday. We were very proud of the skill, effort and teamwork demonstrated by our students. Thank you to Mr Will MacInnes for organising the school’s participation in the Gala Day.Kindergarten 2019 Orientation ProgramThis term, we will be providing a number of opportunities for children commencing school next year as part of our Kindergarten transition program. These include:• Parent Information Night on Thursday 8 November at 7.00pm in the School Hall• Orientation visits for children on Tuesday 13, 20 and 27 November.2018 Remembrance Day AssemblyThis year the K-6 Remembrance Day Assembly will be held on Friday 9 November in the School Hall, commencing at 10.15am. Parents and visitors are welcome to attend this important commemoration assembly.

SRC Year 5 EventsStudent Representative Councils (SRC) work to represent students’ interests and needs in a variety of ways. They take action to bring about positive changes to students and the whole school community. The SRC should enable students to have input on important school issues, such as rules and administration, curriculum, student wellbeing and buildings and grounds.During this term, our Year 5 students will be involved in SRC Selection. Last week, all Year 5 students attended a Leadership Day to build their leadership knowledge and skills. On Thursday 1 November, a Student Representative Council Open Day will be held, where interested Year 5 students will be invited to watch and participate in a SRC meeting. On Monday 5 November, interested students will obtain and complete a SRC Self Nomination Form, which requires them to get a parent signature and the signature of another student which will ratify their nomination. Students have two days to complete and return the self-nomination forms to Miss Murray (5M) by Wednesday 7 November at 3.15pm.We look forward to supporting our Year 5 students, aspiring to be elected to SRC leadership roles in 2019 throughout the process.

Road Safety MessagePlease drop your children off and pick them up in the designated Kiss and Drop zone. Students are requested to cross at the pedestrian crossings to ensure their safety. It is important parents don’t park illegally in school bus zones to enable buses to move to the front of the bus zone, ensuring students enter buses safely in Ben Boyd Road.

Sick ChildrenThank you to our parents/carers who make arrangements for their child to be picked up from school promptly when contacted by the school. It is uncomfortable for students to remain in Sick Bay when they are sick, so please ensure your details and your emergency contact details are up to date for ease of contact. Please also assist by picking up your child promptly when contacted by the school. Thank you for your cooperation in this regard.

Sport House Points Tball ResultsHomerunnersCaptain: Luka CMVP: Toby AWe played Cammeray 2 and won 29-15. We had amazing hits, but our fielding wasn’t the best. I chose Toby because he had really good hits and was an excellent fielder. Also, he was subbing for us from the MVPs.

StrikersCaptain: Dylan TMVP: Tiana FToday Neutral Bay 2 played a fabulous game against Cammeray 1. Our team was amazing at batting but struggled in fielding. Everyone d id very well b ut one person stood out. Tiana F showed some amazing batting skills so that’s why I picked her for MVP.

Double OutsCaptain: Alix PMVP: Toby HWe battled Middle Harbour 2 and won by 19-2. We did ell. We did well with fielding and got many outs and we have improved with our communication b ut we need to work on our batting to make hits go higher and longer. I chose Toby H because he did well in fielding and batting. As this week’s captain, I think he was great.

MVPsCaptain: Anna P MVP:Tanja HNeutral Bay 4 played Artarmon 2. Artarmon was a tough team to play, and won 12-11. Although we lost, the team played well. I think we should work on always putting our feet on the base when running.

StealersCaptain: Evelyn MMVP: Shinna T“Play ball!” shouts Ms Rice. Cammeray Public School did an amazing job. In the end, the score was 18-6 to Neutral Bay. The MVP was Shinna because it was her first time playing tee-ball. The thing we can work on is communicating better. The things we did best were batting and our sportsmanship.

SlidersCaptain: Hunter C-GMVP: Laci WWe played against Anzac Park 2 and won by 11 runs. The score was 25-14. Laci got 2 catches and she did well in batting too. Laci showed bravery because she started to play when she didn’t feel like it.

NBPS Chess ChampionshipOn Thursday 25 November, the Sydney Academy of Chess ran the annual Neutral Bay Chess Challenge. Forty five eager players participated in 7 games of chess throughout the day. Congratulations go to all players for their wonderful participation and excellent sportsmanship displayed throughout the day.

Year 6 Moree ExcursionLast Monday 22 October, 30 Year 6 students arrived at Sydney Central Station, eager to embark on an exciting adventure to Moree, a town in the beautiful Gwydir Valley located in the heart of NSW’s northern wheatbelt. This trip linked in with our involvement in the City-Country Alliance (CCA) and our partnership with Moree Public School.

Accompanied by Ms Carnegie, Miss Chapple and Mr Brown, students took part in a series of fun activities over five days that included a visit to the heritage-listed Myall Creek memorial, interactive performances by an Aboriginal storyteller and didgeridoo player and a visit to Delungra Public School, where we learned about what life is like at a small school. We visited an Indigenous art gallery displaying artworks from around Australia, and visited the Dyhaan Cultural Centre, where we learned about the Freedom Rides of 1965. We also filmed and performed a song and dance routine with the students of Moree Public School.

One highlight was our visit to ‘Westwood’, a farm approximately 45 kilometres east of Moree. Here students watched a sheep shearing demonstration, fed some adorable baby calves with a bottle, learned about sheep crutching and crops grown in that area, including wheat, barley and chickpeas, and played with some very affectionate farm dogs.

Another highlight was playing at the waterpark at the Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre, where students beat temperatures in the mid-thirties by playing in interactive fountains, jets, water slides, sprinklers and under bucket dumpers.

Our Grade 6 Moree camp provided our students with numerous opportunities for bonding. Every student had the chance to shine and learn more about themselves and others.

Gabriel C – The highlight of my stay at Moree was learning about life on a farm and seeing all the little intricate procedures that go on.Alex M – The highlight of going to Moree was the treasure hunt that Mr Brown and Ms White set up around Moree Public School.Mei Yu L – For me, the highlight of my trip to Moree was meeting the students at our sister school and learning about the lifestyle there.

In Science and Technology, Kindergarten are learning all about Toys ‘On the Move’. KB put their creative hats on and sketched a still life artwork of a dinosaur model. We outlined our drawings in black marker and used bright watercolour paint to liven the dinosaur artworks up. We incorporated patterning and different shades of colour to make each dinosaur unique. KB are looking forward to writing exciting and adventurous narratives about our dinosaurs this week!

2D have been learning about persuasive texts as part of our literacy unit this term. We have learnt about the different language features in a persuasive text, such as high modality language and the importance of including 3 powerful reasons and explanations.

2D read the book ‘Hey, Little Ant’ by Hannah Hoose and Phillip Hoose. We brainstormed some great reasons for and against squishing the ant. 2D then wrote their own persuasive text convincing the reader that the ant should or shouldn’t get squished. 2D have thoroughly enjoyed this unit on persuasive text types and have produced some very convincing arguments.

Year 5 have been learning all about bushfires for our geography unit this term. The students each wrote their own rhyming poem about bushfires and created bushfire-inspired artworks.

The quiet night so dark,Until a spark turned the bark,

And the trees ablaze,For long red days.

The wind crashed,And the houses are bashed,

As the land flood,Absorbed the blood.

Out came the fire,Making everything dryer,

And our only hope,Is to hold onto the rope.

Stage 2 News (Years 3 & 4)This week 3S has been busy exploring a range of different Visual Literacy Techniques in stories read in class. As a class, we read the book ‘Where the Forest Meets the Sea’ by Jeannie Baker. Students have learnt about the collaging techniques used by Jeannie Baker and applied these to create an artwork based on her book. We are in the beginning stages, but can’t wait to see our end results.

This week we also enjoyed our BCyberwise session with Gai and Harold from Life Education. The students learnt a range of strategies for researching, using the internet and a range of technologies. 3S enjoyed our time and will be continuing to learn more about Cyber Safety in the coming weeks.
