INTRODUCTION

This special supplement of NEUROLOGY contains extended abstracts of a Conference on Multiple Sclerosis that was held on February 25-27, 1976. The conference was sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, The National Science Foundation of the United States, and The Kroc Foundation for the Advancement of Medical Science. The meeting was held in the Santa Ynez Valley of California at the headquarters of the Kroc Foundation, which is located on the J & R Double Arch Ranch of Mr. Ray A. Kroc.

This is the second conference on multiple sclerosis that has been sponsored by the Kroc Foundation. The first one was held in 1972. At the present conference, many new and interesting findings were reported in epidemiology, neuropathology, immunology and immunogenetics, neurochemistry, and virology. Equally important, the conference provided a forum for a detailed examination of the similarities and differences of multiple sclerosis in Orientals and Caucasians.

We acknowledge with gratitude the support of the Japanese and the United States governments through their Cooperative Science Program. The many new friendships that were made at the conference and the quality of the investigations by the scientists of both countries attest to the value of this binational program.

In a special way we wish to thank Mr. Ray A. Kroc for providing the facilities of the Kroc Foundation and for the publication of this supplement. Dr. Robert Kroc and Dr. Peter Amacher were our kind hosts. Thanks are also due to Miss Elaine Price and Mrs. Setsuko Kashitani for editing and typing the abstracts.
