Youth Exchange This important program aims toprovide a unique and effec<ve Rotary supportededuca<onal and cultural opportunity, whilstpromo<nggoodwill,peace andunderstanding. It’sa reciprocal 12-month secondary schoolexchangebetween students sponsored byRotary Clubs. YouonlyneededtobeattheSheppartonconference tohearthecommentsfromformerexchangestudentsAmandaDrury,PetaCredlinandKristenHilton,allhighly successful women who wanted to thankRotaryfortheopportunitythatchangedtheirlives.Theircommentsaretes<monythatthisprogramisjust as relevant as ever. Past RI PresidentCarl-WilhelmStenhammaronce saidthatif allthe17-year-olds in the worldcouldspend ayearwithRotarians inacountryother thantheir own,therewouldbenomorewars.Rotaryprovidesover8,000secondaryschoolstudentsperyearwithexchangesall around the world. I would love to see the daywhere every cluster of clubs is able to share thehos<ng of at least one student from anothercountry.
RotaryYouthPublicSpeakingProgram.ThisprogramisaimedatSecondaryschoolstudentsofallagelevelsandprovidesanopportunityforstudentstodeveloptheirpublicspeakingskillsinanon-threateningenvironment.TherearethreepublicspeakingeventsheldthroughoutthedistrictandthecommiHeeisonlytoohappytohelpadviseanycluborclusterthatwouldliketocreateone.
RotaractisaRotary-sponsoredserviceClubformenand women aged 18 to 30. All Rotaract effortsbeginat the local, grassroots level,withmembersaddressing their communi<es’ physical and socialneedswhilepromo<nginterna<onalunderstandingandpeace throughaframework of friendshipandservice. Mentoring is provided by the sponsoringClub to enable voca<onal and professionaldevelopmentforindividualsandassistinleadershipgrowth.
InteractisaserviceClubforyoungpeopleaged12to 18 and are sponsored by Rotary Clubs, whichprovide supportandguidance. Eachyear, InteractClubs complete at least two community serviceprojects anddevelopanetworkof friendships andlearntheimportanceofdevelopingleadershipskillsand personal integrity, demonstra<ng helpfulnessandrespect forothers,understandingthe value ofindividual responsibility and hard work andadvancing interna<onal understanding andgoodwill.
Earlyact is a service Club for primary schoolstudents and is sponsoredby a localRotary Club.Earlyact Clubs strive to promote goodwill,understanding and peace through the ac<vepar<cipa<onoftheirstudentmembers,sothatwithcommiHedci<zenshipandeffec<veleadershiptheymayimprovethequalityoflifeoftheirschool,localand global communi<es. I haveobservedovera numberof yearsthecollaboraBveeffortsofthe Goldfields cluster Youth Service Chairs. They meet whennecessarytodiscussandsharetheircombinedresourcesinordertomaximizeparBcipaBonbystudentsintheirregion.Forexample,oneclub may have the financial capacity but are unable to idenBfysuitablestudentsandanotherclubhastheoppositesituaBon.Theircombinedeffortsresult inmorestudentsaIending apotenBallifechanging experience. I encourageall cluster clubstoconsider thisapproach for their Youth Programs,andpotenBallyotherAvenuesofServiceprograms.
Asaparentorgrandparent,haveyoueverfelttheoverwhelming graBtude to someone for doingsomethingthathelpsyourchildorgrandchild?ItisastrongfeelingthatcreatesaninstantappreciaBontoward thosewhohaveprovided thathelp.Inmytravels around the district it is clear that manyRotarians are parents or grandparents of youngpeople that have parBcipated in a Rotary hostedprogram. They were so thankful they wanted tojoinRotaryandgiveback.ThinkaboutinviBngtheparents and grand parents of students younominatewhen they cometo speak to yourclub.Make sure you stay in touch and invite them tootherclubprojectsandevents.Let’s conBnue to build our futureby invesBng intheyouthoftoday!

HaveyoueverwonderediftheworkthatyoudoasaRotarianreallymakesadifference?Thisyear’sConferencehighlightedthatopportuni:essuchasYouthExchangecanmakeahugeimpactuponayoungperson’slifeandkickstartthemtolookforopportuni:estomakeadifferenceinthelivesofothersastheymature.OneofthekeynotespeakersattheconferencewasKristenHiltontheVictorianEqualOpportunityandHumanRightsCommissioner.Shehashadanamazingcareerandapassionforhumanrightsandprotect-ingtheneedsofmarginalisedanddisadvantagedindividuals.ThepresentaBonthatKristengavewasinspiringasshearBculatedshowedhowpromoBngequalrightswithinmajororganisaBonssuchasVictoriaPolicehelpstohelpcreateamorerespeciulworkplace,andalsostrengthenposiBverelaBonshipswithintheworkplace,familyandcommunitythatcanbegintohelpaddressissuesoffamilyviolence.Amonumentalpieceofworkthatreallyismakingadifferenceinthelivesofsomany.AttheconclusionofherpresentaBon,KristenwaspresentedwithagijfromoneoftheD9800ExchangeStudents.ShethenreturnedtothemicrophoneandtriedtofightbackthetearsasshethankedRotaryforthebelieftheyhadinherwhenshewentonexchangeasahighschoolstudent,declaringthatherBmeasanexchangestudentshapedherfutureandhelpedtocreatethelifeshehasnow.KristenwasnottheonlypersonpresenBngattheconferencewhohasbeenabeneficiaryofRotary.KorenHarvey,theMCoftheconference,wasaformerExchangeStudentwhospentayearinGermanywhenshewas16andlaterwasaGSEteammemberwhotravelledtoSwedenasapartoftheGSEprogram.KorenalsoaIributeswheresheisnow;aRotarian,successfulbusinesswomanandamother,toherearlyinvolvementswithRotaryandthatbothoftheseprogramswereinstrumentalinherpassiontoworkwithpeople,connectcommuniBesandreallymakeadifference.StoryajerstoryattheconferenceoutlinedhowthebeliefthatRotaryhadinayoungperson,eitherasanExchangeStudent,amemberofaGroupStudyExchange,PeaceScholaroraVocaBonalTrainingTeam,hasreallyshapedtheirlives.IthighlightedthatthesmallinvestmentthatalocalCluborRotaryFoundaBonmakesthroughtheseprogramsreallycanhaveahugeimpactuponthelivesofthebeneficiaryandtheircommunityastheyconBnuetopayitforwardintheirpersonalandprofessionallives.thecommunityandconBnueherstudiesininternaBonalpolicy?Iamexcitedtowatchandsee!ItmakesmewonderwhatwonderfulthingstheExchangeStudentswearesupporBngwilldowiththeirfutures.HaveweasRotariansinspiredthemtoconBnuedoinggoodintheirlocalcommuniBes?WehaveseenOliviaMeiLai,aformerExchangeStudentsponsoredbyFlemingtonmanyyearsago,goontocreateaBirthforHumankind,anot-for-profitsupporBngvulnerablewomenthroughpregnancyandchildbirth.WillIdaandAnagoontomakeadifferenceinthelivesofmanytoo?WillMaddireturntoFlemingtonevenmoreinspiredtoworkwith?Theconferencereallyhighlightedinsomanydifferentwaysthattheworkthatwedoreallydoesmakeadifference.

It’sofficial,andwecouldn’tbemorethrilled!TheOpenHandChildren’sHomeinKitengela,Kenyaisnow:ghtlysecured!Today,thechildrenatOpenHandChildren’sHomeorphanagehaveseenourcommitmentanddedicaBontotheirwellbeing.OnDec2016,theRotaryClubofLavertonPointCookachievedsuccesswiththecompleBonofthe3-yearprojectatOpenHandChildren’sHome.TheInstallaBonofasolarpoweredelectricfenceandconstrucBonofthestonefencehascreatedabarrierforunauthorizedintrusionduetothej,vandalism,roamingwildlifeandmilitantthreattotheOrphanage.Thechildrennowhaveasecureenvironmenttoplay,learn,androamwithamuchlesserrisk.Andtheydeservethisjustlikeeverychilddoes.ThesolarsysteminstallaBonhaschangedlivesatthehomeforthebeIer,too!Now,thechildrenandcaretakershavearenewableenergysoluBonwithlong-termposiBveeffects.Thesethingsarewonderful.Thesolarsystemoffersavaluableresourcethatwaspreviouslyunreliable.I’mtalkingaboutelectricity.Worriesaboutfrequentpoweroutagesarenolongeraconcern,whichlendstobeIersafetypoliciesandreducedcoststotheorphanage.TheRotaryClubofLavertonPointCookextendourthankstoallcontributorstothisproject.Wearesogratefulforwhatyou’vedone,aswellasyourpastandconBnuedsupport.WhatwehavecollecBvelydonehasmadeadifferenceinthelivesofthesevulnerablechildren.AndasRotariansweneverwalkawayfromopportuniBestochangelifeinasustainablewayforthebeIer.
