Network Hardware Types
Four network hardware types that are used in MCS products:
RS485RS232EthernetLonWorks (twisted pair)
RS485 Hardware
One twisted pair (two conductors)Shielded wire – wrapped foil with drain wireMinimum AWG 20Max baud rate: 115,000 bit/sMultidrop – point to point
Max 30 MCS Controllers wired together
Total Network cable length < 4000’ (1219m)Can be lengthened with a repeater
RS232 Hardware
One to one Three conductor 9 or 25 pin connecterMax total cable length < 50’ (15m)
Can be lengthened with a repeater
Ethernet Hardware
Star topography4 twisted pairs (8 conductors)CAT5EMax baud rate: 10 Mbit/sMax cable length < 328’ (100m)
Can be lengthened with a switch
LonWorks Hardware
One twisted pair (two conductors)Shielded wireFree topographyMinimum AWG 20Total Network cable length < 3280’ (1000m)
Can be lengthened with a repeater
Network Protocols
Network protocols are formatting rules that specify how data is sent and received between devices.Protocols are necessary for devices to interact with each otherProtocols MCS controllers support:
BacnetModbusLonTalkJohnson N2MCS
Network Protocols
The MCS Controllers support the following network protocols:
Over Ethernet
Over RS485
Over LonWorks
MCS Network Adaptors
MCS uses five different optional network adapters:
Hardware AdaptersMCS-485-Gateway (RS232 - RS485)
MCS-Ethernet (Ethernet - RS232)
MCS-USB-RS232 (USB - RS232)
Hardware & Protocol AdaptersMCS-BMS-Gateway (Bacnet MSTP, LonTalk, Johnson N2)
MCS-Bacnet-Router2 (Bacnet IP)
MCS-485-Gateway
Converts betweenRS485 and RS232
Used with the MicroMag for a connection to:
PC (MCS-Connect) MCS-Touch (MCS-Connect)MCS-Ethernet
Can be powered from MCS ControllerOnly hardware conversion, does not change protocol
MCS-Ethernet
Converts betweenEthernet and RS232
Used with the MicroMag for Ethernet connection to:
Internet
Comes with 120V wall outlet power adapterOnly hardware conversion, does not change protocol
MCS-USB-RS232
Converts betweenUSB and RS232
Used for PC (MCS-Connect) communicationPowered through USB portOnly hardware conversion, does not change protocol
MCS-BMS-GatewayConverts Bacnet MSTP (RS485) to:
LonTalk (LonWorks)Johnson N2 (RS485)
Converts Bacnet IP (Ethernet) to:LonTalk (LonWorks)Johnson N2 (RS485)Bacnet MSTP (RS485)
Only supports one MCS-Magnum or MicroMagCan be powered from MCS Controller

MCS-Magnum Communication
RS485 Port
Ethernet Port
The MCS-Magnum comes with two hardware communication ports:
MCS-Magnum Communication
RS485 Bus
The MCS Keypad has a built in MCS-485-Gateway and is connected to the RS485 port on the MCS-Magnum
These two ports cannot be in use at the same time with different protocols:
RS485 port on the MCS-MagnumRS232 port on the MCS-Magnum Keypad
RS232 Port
MCS-Magnum RS232
The MCS-Magnum can be connected to a PC via MCS-Connect using RS232 located on the MCS-Magnum Keypad
The PC may require usb to RS232 adapter, MCS Part # (MCS-USB-RS232)
MCS-PC9-MM cable
MCS-USB-RS232
The RS485 cannot be used with different protocols when the RS232 is used
PC(MCS-Connect)
MCS-Magnum RS485
Using the RS485, the MCS-Magnum can be connected to the BMS (Modbus RTU or MCS 485)

Management System
The RS232 cannot be used with different protocols when the RS485 is used
Wiring MultipleMCS Controllers
...
Using the RS485, the network must be wired controller to controllerStar configurations not allowedUp to 30 controllers can be wired together
