A Christmas Message from the Chairman - 2017 has flown by… firstly thank you to all those in the village that continue to support the management committee and equally thank you to all those who hire the hall. During 2017 the hall’s entertainment committee put on a number of events including a 60’s night, Race night, Music Festival, Roller Discos and Film clubs - these events are only possible because of the dedication of the entertainment’s committee who give up their free time to ensure that fundraising continues, enabling us to keep hire rates as low as possible, whilst we continue to make investments and improvements. To close out the year, please do
come and join us for drinks/nibbles on 21st December (see left). Please note that the halls are closed for maintenance between 24th December and 3rd January. I wish you and your families a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year - Carey Jack, Chairman

I made some lifelong friends and memories such as being involved in sumo wrestling and a silent disco. However my favourite part of the camp wasbeing told at the last minute about the overnight survival and having to oomaro o he o or er o m e me oa a

It was very emotional to leave camp but I was soon happy again, whilst we visited the Leprechaun museum I was transformed into a Leprechaun and struggled to climb into the armchair! Getting a free rainbow pencil was also very exciting!” Caitlin“(At Camp) We went and did fun challenges and games, the games we did were rafting, canoeing, swimming, archery etc. During camp we had a silent disco, where you have to wear headphones and music will play through the headphones. At the leaving ceremony, there were lots and lots of tears and Instagram and Snapchat swaps.ee o e he r eca se ma ea m ac o s e o e e

Harrietsham NetworkA gathering of scarecrows at Harrietsham ChurchThe Rev Millie scarecrow welcomed everyone to the church on Saturday and Sunday 14th and 15th October to view the other 27 scarecrowssubmitted by local voluntary organisations, companies, families andindividuals, at the Friends of St John the Baptist Church Scarecrow Harvest Festival.
Over 100 entries were made in the visitor’s book from as far away as Hampshire and East Sussex and as well as all over Kent. Theoverwhelming response was that all the scarecrows had been “fantastic”; “marvellous”; “lovely”; “brilliant” etc. etc.
Someone was worried about the bell ringer but I am able to report that she was eventually brought down safely! Perhaps of more concern was the rosy cheeked lady from the Fish Scheme who sat quietly throughout the whole weekend without noticeably touching any of the fruit placed in her hands.
All-in-all a very big thank you to everyone who entered their scarecrow and to all those who came to see the results. When added to the regular Ploughman’s Lunch, which served a record number of servings on theSaturday, we managed to raise a total of £572 for the Friends.

For those who are interested, some of the scarecrows not taken back by their creators are carrying out duties on the Harrietsham allotments.

Harrietsham’s First Hybrid Estate AgentsFinally, the beautiful village of Harrietsham has its very own family run Independent Estate Agents J. Richards Properties. Hi, I’m Sarah Gill and I moved to Harrietsham nearly 4 years ago having worked in nearbyLenham for 3 years beforehand. I fell in love with this wonderful village and the beautiful countryside straight away. I’ve worked in the property industry for over 12 years now and after settling here I decided that village life is e e orm am a me
I decided that when my daughter started at the local school in September (which she absolutely loves) I would concentrate my time on setting up my own estate agents, instead of working for someone else. I’m currently based at home but I am actively looking for a local shop base and you are always welcome to come and see me and have a cup of tea at my business a ress s o es ree

Dog Mess Once again we are getting complaints about dog mess around thevillage – particularly West Street and East Street.
We must remind residents it is just not acceptable to allow your dog to foul he aveme a o c sa soacr m a o e cea he ar sh
Council encourages residents to report whoever they see not picking up. The policy of co-mingled bins for dog waste and general rubbish left ourvillage with a lack of bins and since then the Parish Council has beenworking with MBC to get new bins.
have ee as e o oac ea aro heareas ors a ec e but residents, quite rightly, are unhappy to see their council tax being spent this way due to the minority of dog owners who have no regard for their neighbours or surroundings.
The Parish Council has arranged with Maidstone Borough Council for new bins to be installed and worked with residents to decide where these would be best placed. You will have noticed that these lovely blue bins with gold writing have now been installed. They are co-mingling bins, which means that both litter and bagged dogs mess can be placed in them.We have had many complaints about dog waste bags being left on the Booth Field where the dog bin was previously sited. There is now one of the new bins immediately outside the entrance to the Booth Field in Church Road.
Respect your village; respect your neighbours and pick up after your dog. Dog waste should be placed in the co-mingled bins – not left hanging on branches and fences around the village.
Parish Council Meeting The next meeting of the Parish Council will be held on Wednesday 31st January 2018 and it is hoped that the Mayor of Maidstone, Cllr Malcolm Greer, will be in attendance.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish all parishioners a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

News from Harrietsham Primary SchoolOnce again this has been a busy term for the children in the school. The new Reception children arrived at the beginning of September and have settled in well. The rest of the children have also got used to their new classrooms and teachers. At the time of writing the school is still awaiting Ofsted although this may have happened by the time you read thisMost of the older classes have been out on school trips including the Year 6 residential trip to Swattenden where the children learnt to work in teams and also to face their fears about climbing and using the high zip wire.ar o s ra s ac v eshave ee he c a acm a o eeor he h re ee a ea a hoe o es or
disadvantaged children to have at Christmas. The Harvest Festivalcelebrations focused on basic needs with all the donations going to ahomeless charity, Porchlight. All of the children enter into these activities with great enthusiasm.
As you read this the school will be preparing for their Nativity production, Christmas parties and discos and their term will end with a Christingle Service in the church on the last day of term. All the children will make their o hr s esa hese e he he are hech rch hes a will have to supervise this very carefully but I am sure that the result will be worthwhile! Then it will be time for the Christmas holidays and a very well earned rest.

Calling all budding Joseph’s, Mary’s, angels, shepherds and wise men!We will be holding our crib service and morning worship at St John’s Church in Harrietsham at 9.30am on Christmas Eve. We would love to see you, your families and friends there. If you think you would like to take part in a short nativity or elsewhere in the service, then please ring Pamela on 859442.We are looking for children and adults to dress up and/or take part so please talk to your mums and dads, aunties, uncles and grand-parents, and get them involved! Gentle pets who like children are welcome too (after the pet service in summer, we know there are some very special ones in the village). If you would rather not dress up or take part, please do come along anyway and enjoy the service and some refreshments afterwards. Everyone is welcome!

Harrietsham History SocietyI know we all are aware of how quickly time seems to pass by but this year seems to have gone exceptionally quickly and has seen the end of another centenary year of the First World War. I hope you are all enjoying theHarrietsham Times Newsletter which is put together each month by one of our committee, Stephen Morris, from information in the parish magazine of the time. We are still working hard to raise the money needed to replace the gravel paths around the War Memorial but still have some way to go and would really appreciate you considering purchasing a paving brick for just £20.00 if you have not already done so.

Christmas Greetings, - can Aid Christian CareWe have several new worshippers at St. John’s, and it is therefore worthrepeating the idea behind the poster displayed at the back of the church during December. Over the last few years we have posted our greetings on to the poster in lieu of exchanging Christmas cards, and the money saved by doing this is collected each week in the jar provided. We have always collected in excess of £100 which is sent to Maidstone Christian Care for which they are extremely grateful.
Thank you, in advance, for your support.a kie e an
Harrietsham In BloomThe winter bedding plants are now in place comprising, Bellis, bulbs and Polyanthus purchased from Notcutts. Sadly, Farthing Common Garden Centre were unable to supply them this year. We are very grateful to them for all their help and advice in recent years, and wish them well in thefuture.
Two planters have been changed and a new planter sighted at the south end of West Street, donated by Mrs Glenda Dean. Mr Glyn De Lacy has o ere o e eca se ss es era e shor o vo eers o erso he o ea rec a e ease r ha s o o o e ormaking the planters and helping volunteers sight them.
The village collection boxes yielded £63.17 since last being emptied – many thanks to everyone who has contributed. The Chairman and committee wish to thank everyone who has supported H.I.B. during the year and to wish you all Seasons Greetings and safe New Year. In particular to ourlocal Business sponsors, our wonderful team of volunteers, Harrietsham Parish Council, venues that accommodate the collection boxes and allvillagers that have made donations in 2017.

Craft and Chat and CrafternoonCraft and Chat
At our October meeting, members enjoyed making button trees or wreaths in box frames and some made cards out of them instead. We had the Kent Messenger call in on us on their way to the Scarecrow Festival and we were pleased to get a write up on our group in the 26th October edition of the KM.
We are looking forward to making rag rug style wreaths or trees with Kay at our November meeting and we will be making Christmas TudorVillage Scenes at our December meeting which will be held on Saturday 9th December between 1-4pm in the Booth Hall. Everyone will get a chance to make a village scene comprising several buildings including a pub, a church and one or two shops. The pieces for the buildings will be supplied ready to assemble and then members can make their village scenes their own by adding extras such as snow, snowmen, trees, maybe wreaths on the doors, etc. The windows will be covered with acetate so that they will be see through and look realistic and battery operated tealights could be placed inside to light the windows up. Your imagination is the only limitation with this project! Members who wish to make a village scene will need to bring something to use as a base such as a cake board, any embellishments they wish to use, glue, imitation snow, tealights to light up windows, etc, to make their village scene their own. An email will be sent out to members nearer the time with all the details which will be published on Harrietsham Craft and Chat’s Facebook page, too.
There will also be our usual Christmas bash at Hawkley Lodge to lookforward to but the date hasn’t been set yet. Members will be contacted about this soon.
Crafternoon
At our October meeting, a couple of members who couldn’t make theprevious meeting, started stage one of the faux leather notebooks whilst the other members got onto the inking and sealing of the covers. The lining of the covers with fabric was demonstrated so that members could do this part a homea he he o erea or he a ar a o r ovem ermeeting which is sewing in the signatures. Our December meeting will be held on Thursday 21st December between 2-4pm in the Booth Hall. The project will be Somerset Star Christmas cards which involves fabric, sewing and card making all in one project. Details will be emailed to mem-bers nearer the time and provided on our Facebook page. Those members who started their faux leather notebooks in October will still need to do the a ar so he ma o o o h s ecem erra her ha he omerse

December 2017Christian MessageI greatly admire somebody called Paul Kirby. He used to be the headHospital Chaplain for the East Kent Trust. When he retired he washrea e o r ea oo ca e ro m o re o s re ec
the comment he often heard from patients when he approached them in hospital, slightly exaggerated, I suspect. (He doesn’t seem to have written it yet, so don’t add it to your Christmas present list…). But, as the Russian-American songwriter, Regina Spektor, says in one of her songs, “Nobody laughs at God in a hospital”.
Since arriving in Len Valley, I’ve already had two very friendly people wish me well and add, “But I’m not religious”. Well if religion is about nasty rules and a disapproving God, I’m not religious either.
But if spirituality is about knowing meaning in life, living life abundantly in its ups as well as its downs, joining communities with a God called, “Love” ho oves heo cas s soc e a eace he a aro s
turmoil, then I’m all for spirituality.
Using these words, church is about being spiritual, not religious. Christmas me sa er ec me o ach rcha r or o rse o o
Each of us needs to decide how we’re going to approach this big festival. Is it going to be tinsel and lights and used-up credit cards? Or else: do we stare into the face of a baby born over 2,000 years ago and, in the wonder o he hr s masserv ces hemos a esome o a he erso a o homh smo hersa ehas e heh r h oo h s

Christmas trees 2017: a message from Revd John Huggins
Alison and Peter Howard, Nash’s Farmhouse, run a scheme where you donate money for a Christmas tree of your choice and half the money comes back to charity, and half to your local church. Last year they raised a ma ce 11 60 250 rees orch rchesa charThis year there will be available a reasonable number of the traditionalNorwegian spruce, and the softer, slimmer blue tinge Serbian spruce. Please contact them for a tree from 4th November. This is a great chance for you to raise funds for your parish church and some deserving charities a hesame me o ee o ho eorema hem o a mea a e preferably at weekends, to select prior to collection nearer Christmas. The trees stay in the ground until collected so they stay fresher for longer.

Harrietsham Wives GroupOur November meeting and we welcomed Ian Currie to talk to us about ‘Making sense of the Weather’. After only a few minutes it was obvious that Ian had a passion for his subject and we were in for a treat. Thismeeting coincided with the anniversary of the Great Storm and Ian talked to us about the forecast he had done for this and we then moved on to look at other weather phenomena – some of these we remembered and othersbefore our time. Ian told us that there were three ways of forecastingweather; the use of the computer data which is done by the variousme eoro o officesaro he or a o h ch a sa or h hesame statistics and information). We can also just look at the sky andobserve the colour, the cloud formation and the wind speed and direction. The third way is to look at historical statistics for individual months in the as a see here sa a er he rs me ho has eve o e h e
the last years and is the one used by the various media forecasting which we look at every day although Ian told us that not all the broadcasting is done by trained meteorologists which is why there are often variables in hese orecas s For he rs me m shor meas ea er ha os e in and stop Ian as we were in danger of running out of our time in the hall. Not an easy task as this was a fascinating talk given by an enthusiastic speaker and enjoyed by all our members.
Our next meeting is our meal at the Dog & Bear at the beginning ofDecember and then in January we will gather again in the hall for our AGM. This will be held on the second Wednesday in the month.
We would be happy to welcome new members and enquiries should be made to myself (telephone 850652) or our secretary Barbara Kelly(telephone 853803)

The third way is to look at historical statistics for individual months in the as a see here sa a er he rs me ho has eve o e h e
the last years and is the one used by the various media forecasting which we look at every day although Ian told us that not all the broadcasting is done by trained meteorologists which is why there are often variables in hese orecas s For he rs me m shor meas ea er ha os e
in and stop Ian as we were in danger of running out of our time in the hall.

Details will be emailed to mem-bers nearer the time and provided on our Facebook page. the comment he often heard from patients when he approached them in hospital, slightly exaggerated, I suspect.

Using these words, church is about being spiritual, not religious. Christmas me sa er ec me o ach rcha r or o rse o o
Each of us needs to decide how we’re going to approach this big festival. Is it going to be tinsel and lights and used-up credit cards? Harrietsham NetworkShort Mat BowlsOctober was a quiet month with the end of our summer friendlies.
We continued with our Drawn Pairs Competition. Had our A.G.M. on the 12th. Three more games to come this month, Lenham, Woodpeckers andHollingbourne.
We have gained a few new members this month and hope that they grow to enjoy the game as much as the rest of the club.

This excellent talk would have been of particular interest to all the new residents of Harrietsham who might be thinking about planting up their new gardens. Don’t forget to check the websitewww.Harrietshamgardeningsociety.org for details of all forthcoming events.
The next meeting is a Members’ only Christmas Social on December 5th.

Katherin Daking

Dog Mess Once again we are getting complaints about dog mess around thevillage – particularly West Street and East Street.
We must remind residents it is just not acceptable to allow your dog to foul he aveme a o c sa soacr m a o e cea he ar shCouncil encourages residents to report whoever they see not picking up.

When added to the regular Ploughman’s Lunch, which served a record number of servings on theSaturday, we managed to raise a total of £572 for the Friends.
ha o o ho e orh s r e he ovem ere or a of the Network!

I decided that when my daughter started at the local school in September (which she absolutely loves) I would concentrate my time on setting up my own estate agents, instead of working for someone else.
