Read the paragraph carefully and answer the questions given below :Stanley Schachter and Jerome Singer in the 1960s demonstrated the social

influences on emotional reactivity in human beings. They sought to examine twomajor theoretical ideas : Given a state of physiological arousal for which anindividual has no immediate explanation, he will label this state and describe hisfeelings in terms of the cognitions available to him. To the extent that cognitive

factors are potent determiners of emotional state, one might anticipate that preciselythe same state of physiological arousal could be labelled joy or fury or any of agreat number of emotional labels, depending on the cognitive aspects of the situation.Given a state of physiological arousal for which an individual has a completelyappropriate explanation (e.g., I feel this way because I have just received an injectionof adrenaline), no evaluative needs will arise and the individual is unlikely to labelhis feelings in terms of the alternative cognitions available. Experimental findings bythem confirmed their ideas that a cognitive component and an underlyingphysiological arousal are both necessary for emotionality to be fully felt. Thecognitive-steering idea of emotionality has also been applied in clinical settings.Storms and Nisbett (1970) administered placebo pills to individuals suffering frominsomnia. When Placebo was described as arousing agent, the insomniacs had theexplanation of their internal state to some external source (Placebo pill) that theyreported falling asleep sooner in comparison to those who were told that Placebo hadno effect at all. : 1960 : , , , , (
