L ast Sunday at Holy Cross, in my homily, I mentioned that in 1942, the Christian writer,

C. S. Lewis, the author behind the Narnia series, published a

novel called “The Screwtape Letters.” The novel is a fantasy about a

demon named “Screwtape,” who writes letters to his nephew, a younger de-

mon named “Wormwood,” on how to corrupt humans and win the battle for people’s

hearts, minds and souls. “Wormwood” is specifically tasked with corrupting one certain

individual through temptation, and turning that person away from God. Temptation is something that we all suffer with.

Some temptations are mild and innocuous, but some can be strong and harmful. We see around us in our daily lives the

effects of temptation on our fellow human beings.

In last Sunday’s Gospel reading, Jesus was tempted by Satan in the desert with three separate temptations, but the Cate-

chism of the Catholic Church states “it is by his prayer that Jesus vanquishes the tempter, both at the outset of his public

mission and in the ultimate struggle of his agony.”

Prayer is a powerful tool in combating temptation, but we, unlike Jesus, sometimes succumb to our temptations and fall

into sin. So, no matter who we are, we are all fallible individuals in need of forgiveness and healing. Jesus, through his

death and resurrection, has brought us the gift of forgiveness and healing, and we can share in Jesus’ forgiveness and

healing especially through the sacrament of Reconciliation.

This Lent there are many opportunities for us in our three communities to seek forgiveness, and many opportunities for

us to pray. Please check our bulletin and bulletin inserts for all of the Lenten activities that are designed to help us pray,

reflect and seek forgiveness.

St. Paul writes in his Letter to the Ephesians: “Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put

on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with

flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness.”

Jesus conquered his temptation through prayer, and so can we. So, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit, and victory

will be ours in Christ Jesus.

God bless,

Deacon George
