PASTOR’S MESSAGE This is the third part of a

series on the different sections of the Mass continuing an explanation of the “Liturgy of the Word”.

The Liturgy of the Word Section includes: First Reading, Responsorial Psalm, Second Reading, Gospel Acclamation, Gospel, Homily, Creed, and the Prayers of the Faithful. In continuance of the discussion on the Gospel, it is interesting to note that we, in 2020, are in Year A of the three-year Cycle of Sunday Readings: Matthew’s Gospel. The other two years, B and C, cover the Gospels of Mark and Luke. Although John does not have his own year and since Mark is the shortest of Gospels, Year B is supplemented by John’s Gospel, especially in the summer months in which several passages from the Bread of Life Narrative of John’s Gospel is proclaimed. The deacon or priest reverences the Book of the Gospels with a kiss after the proclamation as an outward sign of his internal love for the scriptures. Next comes the homily which is defined by the Cath-olic Dictionary as: “A form or preaching consisting of an address or sermon given by an ordained minister (bishop, priest, deacon) after the Gospel at Mass and intended as an explanation or application of the Gospel passage.” A good homily may help explain complicated scrip-tural texts but more than that offers ways for the listeners to apply the readings to their daily lives of faith. I like to try to find a creative story or image to connect to a theme found in the readings; sometimes writing a homily flows in a couple of hours, while at other times it’s a laborious, rough sailing type of process! The creed follows the homily. The major elements of the Creed we use came from the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. which sought to define essential elements of our faith, such as the triune nature

4

of God that was formulated in the Nicene Creed. It countered the Arian heresy, which taught that Jesus was fully human but not fully divine, by emphasizing the divinity of Christ who was begotten from the Father. A later council, the Council of Constantinople in 381, expanded the Creed which today is referred to as the “Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed”. This creed was modified at the Fourth Council of the Lateran in 1215 to the form we use today. The Apostolic Creed is shorter yet also contains the main tenets of our faith including: the triune nature of God as Father (creator), Son (redeemer), Holy Spirit (sanctifier). The Creed includes the paschal mystery – the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ – that promises us life eternal. It includes our reverence for our Church which is Catholic, meaning a universal entity that encompasses multitudes of languages, ethnicities, and cultures. We believe in the communion of saints in that we are mystically united to those who have gone before us from this world but whose souls live on in heaven. After the Creed we offer the Prayers of the Faithful also called the General Intercessions. The word “general” means that this is not the time for individual petitions but rather communal ones. One is able to offer the Mass for a particular intention, often for the healing of someone or in re-membrance of their anniversary of death, by contacting our parish secretary. At times we mention the particular intention for which the Mass is being offered, although it is always offered for all who are participating. You will notice a pattern in which the first intention is always for the Church; the second, for civic leaders or peace in our world. The rest usually include an intention that connects to a theme within the Gospel, one that prays for the sick, another for the deceased, etc. Due to the dearth of vocations, our Archbishop has asked us to pray for vocations at every Mass we celebrate. The conclusion of the Prayers of the Faithful wraps up the Liturgy of the Word Section of our Mass. - - Fr. Dennis

We remind everyone to continue to wear masks while in church and maintain the six-foot social distancing. NOW we ask when you to come up to receiver communion do not remove your face mask until the after the host has been place in your hands.

BAPTISMAL INFORMATION At this time all baptismal classes and group baptisms are suspended until further

notice. Please contact Deacon Oscar Vela at [email protected] (the Stmatt.org does not need to be capitalized) for all inquires.

PERSONNEL UPDATES There have been some recent updates to our parish staff personnel. We thank Chris Sanchez, who is no longer working as a custodian for our parish, for his many years of service to our parish. We are grateful for all our maintenance workers who are doing an excellent job especially by sani-tizing the church between services. Our maintenance workers include Woody Cirilli, Fannie Garza and Luis Valadez, who a couple of weeks ago became a full-time employee. We also thank Javier Pacheco, our Fa-cility and Maintenance Supervisor, who has had to spend many extra hours during these past few months regarding the new safety protocols we have had to institute. We thank all our staff members and clergy for their flexibility and dedicated service. As of July 1st, Diane Sowell, the wife of Deacon Scott Sowell, has become the new Coordinator of Marriages and Annulments. Judith Poston is now exclusively working as a counselor on our parish staff. We continue to pray for Mary Helen Freeman, one of our receptionists, who has been out several weeks on medical leave. We are hopeful she can eventually return to our parish staff. Because of a drop in our col-lections, we had to make adjustments with our personnel and their hours. We ask for your patience since several of our staff members are working fewer hours than usual. A drop in donations is something that almost all of our parishes in our Archdiocese are facing. Many parishes are having greater struggles than ours and have made even more drastic staff layoffs and reduc-tion in employee hours. This pandemic is a true challenge for each of us to ask ourselves what does it mean to be part of St. Matthew Parish? Even if you are not coming to Mass in person, we pray you are join-ing us through our taped Masses and consider yourself an important part of our community. We are still, with great care, conducting most of the usual ministries of our parish, such as Confirmations, First Com-munions, our weekend and daily Masses, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, funerals and weddings. We are conducting what would have been in person meetings in our office with phone calls and at times digital meetings. The youth group continues to meet through digital meetings. Let us continue to pray for an end to this pandemic, for increased therapeutics to help those who are infected and for a vaccine. Mostly, let us pray for one another as we continue to do the work of evangelization that our world so desperately needs.

ANOINTING OF THE SICK The practice of offering the Sacrament of the Sick will take place on the second Sunday of this month following the 1:00 p.m. Liturgy. This anointing is not a Mass. The format used is called “Anointing Outside Mass.” Fr. Dennis wishes to inform the parish as a whole that the Sacrament of the Sick is for the following: those who are sick, those facing surgery, those with a disease or illness, the aged and anyone who needs God’s healing presence in other areas of their lives. The following is the outline of the service that will be used July 12 for the Anointing of the Sick. It will begin approximately at 2:30 p.m. and conclude within 30-35 minutes afterwards.

PLEASE USE YOUR PRE-PRINTED ENVELOPES Registered members of the parish should be receiving a packet of contribution envelopes every month from St. Matthew. These envelopes have vital information printed on them to assist the staff in accurately posting and subsequently reporting your contributions at the end of the year. We are requesting that all parishioners make use of these convenient envelopes to facilitate our work here in the office. If on occasion, you do forget your envelope, please do one of the following: (1) Use the red and white envelope in the pew, being sure to write out your full name and address on the front of the envelope. Put your check or cash inside and drop it into the collection basket; or (2) You may also put a “loose check” (no envelope) in the basket provided that your checks have your name and address on them. St. Matthew cannot give credit or verification of donations made with “loose cash,” that is, cash which is not in a clearly marked envelope. Full name and address are important because of the large numbers of parishioners with similar names. We at St. Matthew are grateful for the generosity of our members. In addition, we would like to be of assistance to you when tax season comes around by providing you with an accurate accounting of your sacrificial giving. In order to accomplish this, we are in great need of your help in the ways outlined above. May God bless you for your continued support of our parish. Thank you very much.

under Adult Confirmation Section.

GOD’S WORDS Each day we are bombarded with thousands of words. From the moment our clock radios click on in the morning, until the last moment of the day when the television is turned off or someone bids us “good-night,” our life is filled with words. Some words that we hear bring news that leaves us feeling low. Some words lift our spirits. Many of the words we hear are trying to get us to buy something. Some words are hurtful. Today the Church focuses our attention on hearing the word of God. Are God’s words just more of the same—part of the endless stream of words that flow into our ears each day? The challenge today is to allow God’s word to inspire us in new ways so that our outlook and attitudes align themselves more closely with the heart and mind of Christ Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — My word will achieve the end for which it was sent (Isaiah 55:10-11). Psalm — The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful har-vest (Psalm 65). Second Reading — We, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan within ourselves awaiting the redemption of our bodies (Romans 8:18-23). Gospel — Some seed fell on rich soil and produced fruit (Matthew 13:1-23 [1-9]).
