Hi NEST+m Key Club! My name is Kiyoon Brian Ko, Lieutenant Governor of Division 3A from the Crabtastic Capital District! I had the honor of having your president, Michelle, attend the workshop that I co-hosted with your Immediate Past AND current International Trustee, Renisha Daley from the Jamaica District! I just want to briefly say a few words from my workshop that I believe one should carry and remember not only during their Key Club career, but in his or her whole life.

I want to ask you this question: what does these higher "titles" mean? Being  a Club President, Lieutenant Governor, District Governor, International Trustee, or an International President, what does it all mean to you? Those positions does not mean ANYTHING if there are no members who they can serve. Remember that Key Club International has a reverse hierarchy; members are on the highest rank! It's dedicated, passionate, and excited key club members like you who excite us to work harder and make your experience in Key Club as enjoyable as possible!

In conclusion, the ultimate message I want to deliver is this: you don't have to hold an officer position to be a leader. Every single one of you have the power to influence the ones around you and you, too, can be a leader!

Get to Know the Board!

Hey guys. It’s your Vice President here. One of my goals last year was to increase membership and awareness of Key Club. I initiated what our then-Secretary named Project Phoenix. Our plan was to make meetings more engaging, invite new members, increase member participation at events and make Key Club something known within NEST, With great confidence I can say that we’ve succeeded! Fall Rally had our highest member turnout yet and we’ve seen 20 or so loyal members in addition to up to 50 members show up at meetings. My personal goals are to make more time for Key Club and attend more events once college stuff settles down and for Key Club to be deeply ingrained into NEST culture. Stay strong, Beavers!

Rayat RahmanVice-President

Michelle FengPresident

I am so excited and honored to be your 2014-2015 NEST+m Key Club president! During this service year, the main goal will be for each member to reach the Key Club International’s minimum service requirement of 50 hours by the end of each service year in April. By volunteering, we will be able to build a stronger bond between each member, which is what a club is all about. It’s not hard to receive these service hours. There are events every week. Some weeks, there will even be two events. I cannot wait to see you there! Also, all these service hours can help you reach that NEST+m volunteer requirement. One cool thing about being in Key Club is your limits are endless. You will be able to plan certain events throughout the year. If there is a charity that you are passionate about, we will always consider it.

Last, but not least, one thing I regret most is not joining Key Club earlier, so if you see some people not in Key Club, tell them about Key Club, ask them to join, and if they are dedicated, they won’t regret it.

Tun Oo SweTreasurer

As Treasurer, I hope to hold as many fundraising events for my school’s Key Club under the budget. Also, as Treasurer, I hope to manage and utilize my club’s fund to maximize the probability of getting good results out of it. I hope that during my tenure as the Club Treasurer and before leaving high school, I will have raised awareness and see growth in my school’s Key Club.

As Secretary, I aspire to lead our club into a successful and thriving 2014-2015 service year. My goal is to continue Key Club’s legacy, affectively improve on its efficiency, and uphold its integrity. To do so, I have set up a club folder that contains club bylaws, attendance records, printed agenda of past club meetings, and an official club roster. Moving forward, I plan to increase communication between the club officers and the club members. Monthly evaluation sheets will be distributed in order to mold our club according to member likes and dislikes. My goals as Secretary are not only just to maintain an organized club, but also to monitor our clubs progress as a whole. My objective is to motivate our members and ensure that each person receives proper guidance, opportunity, and dignity.  Being secretary is not just a job: it is also a privilege. Therefore, with these goals in mind, I look forward to a successful and amazing service year.

I look forward to learning to serve you as bulletin editor of the 2014-15 service year. It takes a good club member to attend club meetings, but it takes a great member to attend events and fundraisers. I intend to lead by example, and look to guide a positive Key Club experience this year and years to come! As bulletin editor, I will work alongside YOU, the member to shape and publicize the monthly newsletter. I will also be working along with Crystal to to keep you informed and involved on all of the service projects this upcoming year.If you ever have any questions, concerns, ideas, or just want to chat, feel free to talk to me, or any of our board members.

As webmaster, I aspire to contribute to the continuously thriving community. At this point, our club is already quite successful; we have many dedicated members who attend meetings every week and weekly service projects. But it is my belief that it shouldn’t stop from there! In the near future, I will be coding a new website for better aesthetics and cleaner functions. I will also be creating a mobile friendly version of the website so that our Key Clubbers can check it on the go! Additionally, while our Key Club may be connected to social media websites such as Facebook, I plan to incorporate what we have on those pages on the website such as the Google forms that we use to sign up for events. Our social media networks will be updated constantly for new events and announcements, so keep an eye out for those! After I achieve these goals, I hope to set even more goals to help better NEST+m Key Club.

It is exciting to be one of the chairs in our first ever Fundraising Committee. In my opinion, being part of a committee is a great opportunity to learn leadership skills. It is always fun to voice your opinion, as well as, listening to other’s opinions. Upon joining, I realized that many Key Club members at NEST+m are notinvolved as much as other members in our division. I want this to change as I work alongside Lin Li, and other members in the fundraising committee to come up with fundraisers. The committee has already brainstormed exciting fundraising ideas, such as selling t-shirts, having a dance, and a “pie your teacher day”. Hopefully this would attract more members and keep them involved.

Get to Know the Committee Chairs!

My main goal is to promote Key Club and all the fun we have! As one of the chairs, I willtry my best to promote Key Club, to get more members and a bunch of people to get involved with the events. The committee will make posters to help promote the future events and fundraisers. Also, as the photographer, I will try my best to take as many pictures as I can of the events, for the Facebook group or the newsletter.

As a Key Club Public Relations Committee Chair, I strive to uphold character, citizenship, scholarship, and integrity. This year, I want to make Key Club a more dynamic, close, and interactive club. NEST+m Key Club is still not very well-known and I hope by the end of the year with my help and the help of the rest of key club; we can reach new heights and achievements. My personal goal is to gain leadership and teamwork skills. As a committee chair, I hope to promote the fun events in key club and make people more aware of what key club is. Moreover, Iwant to be more active and learn more about how to be a stronger leader. This year I also want toattend more divisionals, and events such as walks, soup kitchens, and sport tournaments. If I become a more active and enthusiastic key clubber, I can hopefully be a role model for new members in the following year. All in all, key club is a place where I can take my experiences and learn more about the world and myself. I anticipate reaching these goals by the end of this year, but also continuing to learn and strive for above and beyond.

Everyone was eager to meet everyone else. On elevators, seats, and hallways throughout the hotel, we spoke about our amazing International candidates from the New York District. I made many amazing friends, especially the ones who were club presidents and who could help me learn about service projects and how they try to make their clubs work. To be honest, I met my greatest friends on a Starbucks line in the hotel.

The Caucus sessions were probably the most interesting part of the trip because all the candidates running for International office were outstanding and incredibly qualified. The candidates used perspectives that they wanted to bring forth to Key Club. Another session was held to speak to the candidates one on one, which really helped us learn about how they overcame their difficulties and reasons why they joined Key Club. In one instance, Rip Livingston, a International Trustee, joined Key Club because of a crush he had on a girl that was in it!

Besides, the Caucus session, there were endless amounts of workshops. It took me a lifetime to decide which ones I ultimately wanted to attend. One of the workshops that I attended was “The opportunities of Key Club” which was run by Renisha Daley, Key Club International Trustee, Kimberly Blair (Key Club Governor of Jamaica District), and Kiyoon Ko. It felt like the ideal club meeting, one where Ice-Breakers were involved and a place where no one was afraid of breaking out of their shells. Kiyoon Ko of the Capital District said “It doesn’t matter if you are a member, Lieutenant Governor, District Governor, International Trustee, or an International President. All of you are leaders and all of you have the power to change the world!” Attending this year’s ICON gave me a greater perspective of what Key Club really is. Key Club is this amazing service organization that teaches members how to work with other people as well as learn about responsibilities. Key Club has so many partnerships with other organizations that the opportunities are endless.

Volunteering at Riverside Park was a nice experience. It was pleasant working in a beautiful setting full of many plants and park wildlife. Jane, our supervisor for the event was very nice. We were given gloves to protect our hands and tools to cut the plants that were growing out too long past the fence. We were later led over to an area full of weeds. We were instructed to pull them as they were an invasive species. However, Jane told us to leave some of the weeds at the top alone to keep it as a protective barrier from harsh weather as well as to keep the soil intact. The most difficult part about the experience was that some weeds were hard to pull out and took more body strength than some of the smaller weeds. The sun was also high above us, making work more difficult than it already was. An interesting thing I noticed about pulling out weeds was that when you pulled them out, it sounded like they were screaming out in pain. The best part of this experience was working as a team with the other volunteers and meeting new people from other schools. Together, we pulled out many weeds and the end result was very visible for all park goers to see. Hopefully, more people will show up to these kind of events in the near future.

Club Hours: 36 hours

We are currently up to 36 hours of community service for the month of October. This excludes Fright Night. Please give Secretary Lin Li information about how many hours you volunteered at Fright Night by writing it on your NEST+m Key Club Hours Sheet so that we can update the club hours for this month.

OUR GOAL for the month of October is to reach 100 hours of service!

Club Members: 20 members

We are currently up to 20 paid members. We are aiming for 40 members this year. Ask your friends to join! Events every week! Ways to help out your school and community!

Fundraising from Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF: $0

We are hoping to hit $250 by the end of November even though Halloween is in October. The money raised during Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF benefits aid towards Maternal Neonatal Tetanus (MNT). MNT is caused by bacteria that spread throughout an infant’s body at birth due to unsanitary utensils. We can avoid this by donating $1.80 which will protect a woman and her future newborns; so ask your neighbors, ask your family, and ask your teachers to donate! With your help, mothers and their children will be immune to the tetanus disease. We hope each member can donate at least $9 to the project.
