Kavod Wins Top Wellness Community – North America“We’re not just putting together health-related
services here, but working as an entire organization to establish optimal health for everyone who comes through our doors.”
–Mandie Birchem, Director of Health & Wellness at Kavod
Twenty-five senior communities have been recognized with the 2019 ICAA NuStep Beacon Award for their “Best in Wellness” achievements, and one of them
is Kavod Senior Life. Wellness was defined as a culture that permeates all aspects of life, not simply something to practice and this awards program highlights older adult communities whose efforts make them shining examples.
The ICAA (International Council on Active Aging) partnered with NuStep LLC (a manufacturer of recumbent cross trainer exercise equipment used in healthcare, senior living and fitness settings) to reward organizations who “successfully foster a wellness culture and an environment that supports wellness for all who live and work there.”

Kavod in the City Fit After 60 program
As you may know, Kavod’s mission is “to provide life-enriching experiences to older adults through a broad range of housing and support services that reflect the spiritual, social and cultural values of Jewish tradition.”
It is a Jewish value to serve individuals from all backgrounds and socio-economic levels, which is what we do at Kavod. Unfortunately, around us we see how many older adults lack the financial resources to access health, food and social services. This deficit statistically puts them at higher risk for chronic illness and hospitalization.
To address these risks, Kavod has added robust health servicesand activities on campus (as mentioned in our cover story) and we then extended some of these services to the general community.
As a result of this broader reach, we were honored to receive the 2019 LeadingAge – Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Award for Health Equity. LeadingAge represents over 6,000 non- and for-profit organizations caring for older adults and RWJF is one of the leading health foundations nationally. It was particularly humbling to be the sole recipient of this national recognition for effectively reducing health disparities.
Two specific Kavod programs were the focus of the RWJF award. Kavod in the City, funded by a grant from the NextFifty Initiative, has provided activities to reduce social isolation at three designated Denver Housing Authority senior buildings over the last two years. This programming is an extension of our ongoing Kavod on the Road program that serves over 900 older adults primarily in the Jewish community. Although similar to traditional Kavod on the Road goals, Kavod in the City stresses basic health and wellness activities.
I think of the passage in Psalms 71:9, which states, “Do not cast me away at the time of old age; when my strength fails, do not forsake me.” It is so important to take care of our elders who have already done so much for us. Receiving a prestigious award like this one—and the one mentioned on the cover—just solidifies the value of our work and enhances our commitment to stay on course.

Kavod rose to the top for instituting healthy initiatives both for residents and for staff. Some of these include our Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Health & Wellness Center, staff health benefits, a robust activities program and much more.
“It is a pleasure to honor the top 25 senior wellness communities,” says Jane Benskey, Marketing Communications Specialist at NuStep. “Their recognition of the value and importance of creating cultures where wellness is not a program in a room, but rather a way of life, is having a lasting and positive impact on many lives.”
Of all the winners from across North America, Kavod was the only one from Colorado.
“We are so happy to receive this award,” commented Mandie Birchem, Director of Health and Wellness at Kavod Senior Life. “We’re not just putting together health-related services here, but working as an entire organization to establish optimal health for everyone who comes through our doors. We are grateful for being recognized for the importance of this work.”

Kavod received two notable awards this year as the result of the outstanding services we make available to our residents and community endeavors. While we are pleased to receive these stamps of approval, the most important reward is learning about Kavod’s positive impact on the lives of those we serve. I was recently speaking with Sandy Mix, who exemplifies how the opportunities on our campus have dramatically enhanced her life. Sandy is 74 and has lived at Kavod for eight years.

“When I walk out my door, I have instant community,” Sandy shared with me. “Having on-site physical therapy has helped me increase the strength in my legs. I also love going to the classes for the connectivity – it is a joy. In fact, this last year I learned a new skill by joining the campus drama club and acted in a play! Living at Kavod gives me a sense of well being; it is really the best place ever.”
Sandy is one of hundreds of older adults living at Kavod who provide this kind of feedback. They are thriving due to the programs provided by the financial support
of the community as well as the investment from philanthropic foundations.
On behalf of Sandy and our other residents, we thank you wholeheartedly for your generous support that makes these programs possible. If you’re interested in getting more involved, I welcome your call to discuss some ideas; you can also find examples on our website at KavodSeniorLife.org/Give.
