by Father Michael This weekend the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. Traditionally, the day is referred to as Corpus Christi. In a particular way we are mindful of the gift of the Eucharist. This feast day will always hold a special place in my heart; the day I was ordained happened to be the same weekend as Corpus Christi. So, this was the first Mass I celebrated. This prompts me to offer a little reflection on the Eucharist. One of the many blessings of my life is I have been given the opportunity to travel to many places. Years ago on a priests’ retreat I celebrated Mass at one of the side altars at St. Peter’s in Rome. I have had the opportunity to celebrate Mass on the rim of the Grand Canyon and on the stump of a redwood tree in Northern California. This summer on the parish trip, I celebrated Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Charleston. As neat as these “on the road” experiences have been, I think the most meaningful ones for me have always been in the midst of the community I was called to serve. As a newly ordained priest at St. Elizabeth in Melville I celebrated the final Mass in the church the night before a major renovation began. I fondly remember saying the annual opening Mass for St. John the Baptist High School out on the lawn in front of the building. And, I will never forget the Mass on the evening of September 11, 2001 at St. Sylvester in Medford; it was a community united around the altar at the end of a tragic day. All of these Masses are somewhat “milestone events.” There is something important about remembering those defining moments. But, when all is said and done, a true gift of the priesthood is to share the Eucharist with a community each and every Sunday. It is a humbling experience to share in the spiritual feeding of so many people. The more I come to know the people of this community and their stories, the more of a privilege it is to be the one who feeds. When I reflect upon those “ordinary” Masses, I realize how rich they each are as they provide that precious gift of the Eucharist. It is the ongoing event that defines and sustains all of us as believers. When I think back to that first Mass I realize I was but a “baby priest” nervously starting off on a lifelong journey. I know there were a few rough edges when I said that Mass, but none the less, our Lord was present and it was a moment of grace. A lot of water has passed under the bridge in that time. I am certainly more comfortable in my role. But, none of that has anything to do with whether or not our Lord has fed us. He is present on the best of days, as well as the ones that are still a bit shaky. How blessed we are to share in this rich gift of our Lord. Thank you for the acceptance, trust and kindness in allowing me to celebrate with you in this holy meal. Blessings to all.

“In Stitches” Group Hi! Do you knit, crochet, counted cross stitch, needle point or quilt? Then you have UFP (unfinished projects). How many times do you sit down to finish a project only to be interrupted and never get to that project? Well join me, Doreen, on Tuesday, June 20th, from 10AM to 12noon in the Fr. Joe Room. We will make new friends, relax, laugh, and maybe even learn a thing or two. (Please note that we will be skipping a few weeks, so the following meeting will be on Tuesday, July 18th.)
Special Collection The Bishops of the United States have approved a
special one-time collection on June 17/18 for the

Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington,
DC. Your prayerful and financial support will not
only adorn this “Crowning Jewel” and complete
Mary’s Shrine, but will also leave a lasting legacy for
generations to come in this living monument to our
Catholic faith and heritage that is America’s Catholic
Church. Thank you for your support!

Teacher Told,
“Don’t Pray”
In Maine last month, a high school educational
technician, Toni Richardson, filed charges of re-
ligious discrimination and retaliation with the
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission,
after being instructed to never use phrases like
“I will pray for you” and “You are in my prayers”
in private conversations with coworkers.
Toni had tried to privately encourage a coworker
with whom she attends church, by saying, “I will
pray for you.” Months later, after a falling out,
this coworker lodged a complaint against her and
the school gave Toni an official “Coaching Memo-
random” which told her that stating “You are in
my prayers” is not acceptable. The memorandum
said that she could not use “phrases that integrate
public and private belief systems” while at school.
The memo specifically explains that she will face
discipline or dismissal in the future for using
these phrases.
“What Augusta Public Schools did by punishing Toni
for discussing her faith in a private conversation
with a coworker is unconscionable,” said First Liberty
law firm’s Senior Counsel. “The law is clear: employ-
ers cannot discriminate against employees who pri-
vately discuss their faith while at work.”
U.S. Dept. of Education Guidelines:
Teachers may meet with other teachers for prayer or
Bible study to the same extent that they may engage
in other conversation or non-religious activities.
