RELIEFFollowing the April 25th earthquake, three teams were mobilized to visit alltemporary settlements in and aroundthe Kathmandu valley to conduct aNeeds Assessment. Using a tooldeveloped with technical supportfrom School of Public Health, UAB,the assessment was essential tounderstand the situation and the typeof response we would be able toprovide.Using the findings of the assessmentalong with cross cluster coordination,it was decided that apart from therelief materials donated, NFCC wouldfocus on providing menstrual hygienemanagement materials, soap andwater purification supplies. The 5 districts NFCC worked in wereallocated by the Ministry of Health. Each of our five teams consisting ofapproximately 7 volunteers led by anNFCC core team member. The teamspent close to two weeks in theirallocated districts coordinating closelywith the District Public Health Office.Despite the May 12th earthquaketesting the morale and spirit of ourteams out on mission, they continuedto work and complete distribution intheir allocated areas.

AWARENESSAwareness and education were key components of the NFCC response. As per standard protocol, every team member working with NFCC in the response was trained on how to conduct an orientation session prior to every relief distribution event. A typical session conducted by NFCC included the following:1. The need for proper

hygiene and sanitation post earthquake

2. How to maintain hygiene3. Basic hand-washing4. Basic menstrual hygiene

management5. How to purify waterAs per standard protocol, every individual was provided relief only after attending a hygiene session conducted by our team and was registered into our database with contact details and signatures acknowledging them having received the aid. All documentation of our beneficiaries is available on request by any of our donors.

Jana Udhar Higher Secondary School is a community schoollocated in Ward No.17, Buddhanilkantha, North ofKathmandu was established in 1990. The earthquakedestroyed most of the school infrastructure including toiletsand water supply. Most of the classrooms were rebuilt withpre-fab materials by other donors but since the toilet facilitiesrebuilt were not adequate, girls in the school were facing a lotof problems. A teacher of the school contact NFCC andrequested help. Handwashing stations to meet the needs ofall students was also absent. With funds raised by Manjari andHridai Moktan’s children, NFCC committed to buildingtoilets for girls and handwashing stations that would cater tothe needs of all students. Due to the blockade in Nepal, completion took long and became expensive. We were able tochannel funds from the earthquake fund to complete thecommitment. On March 21, 2016, the toilets and handwashingstations were handed over to the school.
