Neowin Lives #DigitallyDark As part of the LoJack #DigitallyDark challenge, Neowin’s Christopher White agreed to go without his mobile device for 2 days to simulate what it’s like to experience mobile phone theft. In his post, Christopher says the results came as a surprise.

What's the first thing that comes to mind for most people when they think they lost their phone? You're probably saying things like "email access," "Twitter feeds," and "Google Maps," because that's what I thought I'd miss most during the two days of my phone-less life. For me, however, that turned out to be wrong as the thing I missed most was also the most basic: the clock. I never realized how many times I pull my phone out of my pocket just to see what time it is. Having only a rough idea of the time turned out to be more stressful than not having access to my email.

Christopher shares what has become so commonplace: phones have replaced watches. In fact, it’s so commonplace, there are thieves who are asking the time as a scam to get you to pull out your phone! (Hence why we want to bring watches back!)

While Christopher found that having his phone did have some benefits - less web surfing to kill time, less trivia searching just because - it also had drawbacks. His wife, for example, had no way to contact him, particularly as they had no landline.

As Christopher pointed out, the #DigitallyDark challenge did not simulate other aspects of theft, such as the stress of trying to recover a phone, the worry about compromised data or always authenticated apps, the costs of paying for a new device, or the stress of dealing with identity theft or fraud down the line.
