    Kia ora tātou,

    Senior Prizegiving

It was wonderful to celebrate our senior

students’ success at the Senior Prizegiving two

weeks ago. It was great to see so many young

men across the stage and have their hard work

and ability honoured by the school and fellow

students. You can find photos of all prizewinners

    on our FLICKR account at

Congratulations to our 2020 Dux – An Nguyen.

An is an outstanding young man and a deserved

    recipient of this award.

Congratulations also to our 2021 Head and

Deputy Head Boys: Kaio Lart (Head Boy), Moss Cattell,

Michael Lauer and Tim Mclroy (Deputy Head Boys). We will announce our Māori,

Pasifika and International Head Boys early next year. I look forward to working

with them and other student leaders in 2021.

    End of Year

It’s a busy time of year as we wrap up 2020 and plan for 2021. Thank you for your support of the MOE’s Teacher

Only Day which helped staff plan for changes to NCEA.

Many of the proposed changes to NCEA are technical, such as modifying the number of credits per subject, and

changes to literacy and numeracy requirements. These will be introduced over the next five years with the initial

(Level 1) changes being implemented in 2023. It was good for staff to have the day on Monday to consider these

changes and their impact here at Nelson College.

NCEA in 2020 finishes on Tuesday 8th December. At the same time, our junior students will have their activity days

on Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th December; followed by the Junior Prizegiving on Thursday 10th December. I look

    forward to seeing you then.

    Measles, Mumps and Rubella Vaccine

With all the talk of COVID-19 and possible vaccines, the MOE has sent out information to schools about free

vaccinations for Measles, Mumps and Rubella. Given the recent Measles outbreak around New Zealand in 2019, I

strongly encourage you to check that your whānau are vaccinated and safe from these diseases. I’ve included

information about this in this newsletter.

    Final Newsletter

The last newsletter for the year will be on Friday 11th December. It’s hard to believe that 2020 is drawing to a close.

    Ngā mihi nui,

    Richard Dykes Headmaster

    Senior Prizegiving

As one of the highlight formal occasions of the year, the 2020 Senior Prizegiving was a winner. Prizes, surprises and

much adulation for triumph in a difficult year. The night was heralded with bagpipes, Johan Banks and Brodie

Devon. Mighty congratulations to all the boys who achieved so much, and many thanks to everyone who worked so

hard to make the night a success. Thanks to 2020 Head Boy Liam Brennan for his leadership throughout 2020.

Special congratulations to our 2020 DUX, An Nguyen, and to our 2021 Head Boy, Kaio Lart. Big congratulations to

the Boarders for taking out the Neale House Cup for the first time ever! Also, it was fantastic to see a particularly

moving haka for Mr Kelly, who leaves us after 21 years.

The full list of Awards is here: https://www.nelsoncollege.school.nz/latest-news/senior-prizegiving/

    Future Problem Solving

Congratulations to Alex Bryant who came second nationally in Scenario Writing.

Because 1st and 2nd place were so close, he has been invited to represent NZ

internationally next year. (That’s Alex in the middle, wearing his school jacket).

Our Middle and Prep teams were not placed in the top three this year but I

congratulate them for being in the top ten teams in NZ.

So that’s a big congratulations to our Middle team – Alex Bryant, Sam Brookes,

Nick Peterson and Oliver Taylor; and our Preps – Neil D’Souza, Sam Dukes, James

    Matthews and Alex Taylor.

    Reading at Hampden Street School

Some of our Y9s and Y10s have been part of a pilot programme, working with kids at Hampden Street School. It’s

amazing how something as simple as one-to-one reading time can be so effective in increasing confidence,

improving reading skills, and connecting with others. It gives our big boys a chance to meet and work with some

little ones for a win-win outcome.

Gibbons Trades Centre now building Portable Cabins

For the last few years, senior students attending classes at our Gibbons Trades Centre have been honing their skills

on a wide range of constructions – playhouses, chicken coops, outdoor tables, small houses, dog kennels, planter

boxes and more! The proceeds from sales is ploughed straight back into the Centre, on tools and materials.

In 2021, the plan is to construct portable buildings that can be short-term leased as cabins or offices. This means

that the boys are set a new construction challenge, and that the cabins become a resource for the school as

potential income. It’s a win-win situation (not to mention an added win for whoever is looking for a temporary

    building).

    - 10 square metre building. (Base size is 4m long x 2.5m wide).

    - Exterior cladding in easy maintainable coloursteel.

    - Fully insulated floor, walls and ceiling.

    - Completely lined walls and ceiling.

    - Carpet on the floor.

    - Powered sockets and lights with exterior waterproof connection.

    - Treated floor to enable building to be placed on blocks close to the

    ground.

    - Option of front deck and veranda.

-Arranged delivery and set up on site.

If you need extra working or office space, or a way of giving your teenager their own space, then this is the

solution! We have the flexibility to build customised buildings for clients who may like to change the specification

items, eg size, design, cladding, window, and door configuration etc.

Price is $70 a week (minimum 3 months period and conditions apply) We can also price to sell, for those wo would

prefer to buy rather than rent.

    Peer Tutors

At this time of the year, there are many to thank for their commitment to going the extra mile in helping others.

Our Peer Tutoring Program is drawn from Y10-Y13 boys on the Student Academic Committee. These Tutor students

meet with other students, Tutees, at all levels on a regular basis, to help with studies and exams in a broad range of

subjects from English to Maths, History to Physics, Chemistry to Business and beyond.

Each tutor adds to the burden of their own studies the commitment to helping another person do well. It is often

satisfying (and sometime frustrating) work for both the Tutor and the Tutee. Some of these boys took on multiple

tutees. Thanks to all these boys who received a Peer Tutor badge for their work on behalf of the school, and on

    behalf of their fellow students.

Special thanks to: Johan Banks, Liam Brennan, Maxwell Busby, Josh Chan, Punn Cowain, Sameep Dahal, Jack Deans,

Jack Deans, Daniel Dennis, Euan Fenwick, Finnian Hall, Louis Hobson, Woosoek Jang, Yunho Jang, Harrison Kroos,

Jacob Liddle, Plub Lortharaprasert, John-Luca Louverdis, Om Maisuria, Zoltan McComb, Tim McIlroy, Daniel Neal,

An Nguyen, Jaewoo Park, Jake Patel, Ronan Thompson and Luke Walker

    Spirit of Adventure

Congrats to Y11 Sam Newson for winning the Nelson College PTA Scholarship for the Spirit of

Adventure. Thanks to our PTA, Sam will spend 10 days sailing from Auckland. It's an incredible

opportunity to learn all sorts of life-changing skills, take on challenges, build confidence, make

new friends, and yes, how to crew a 42m tall ship! Ahoy Sam - congratulations!

    Y12 & Y13 Balls

After being postponed a couple of times, it was amazing to be able to go ahead with the Y12 and Y13 Balls. Both

nights were a great success, with heaps of photos to prove it!

    Japanese Quiz Night

Nelson College hosted this year's Japanese Quiz Night. The event is run through NZ

Association of Japanese Language Teachers (NZAJLT) and is run in eight regions

across the country. This year was the 5th year the event was held with NC battling

against Waimea College, Nelson College for Girls, and Motueka High School. Our lads

did incredibly well, and graciously handed last year's title over to this year's winners

    – big congrats to Motueka!

    Photos!

Sporting and cross curricular photos ordered by the cut-off date have been delivered to the College. Junior photos

are with homeroom teachers to be handed out and Year 11- 13 photos are in reception for collection. Photos can

still be ordered and delivered but, possibly, might not be delivered this term. [email protected]

    Armistace Day

Nelson College was well represented at Armistice Day at the Nelson RSA, in the band, the cadets and by Stanley

Page-Bates as one of the speakers. Well done lads.

    A Box of Fluffy Ducks

Locky Hume was given a suitable send off in the College Hall last week, with friends and family gathered to farewell him with stories and waiata, as well as a haka for his family. The service is available to watch online https://www.heretogolive.com/hume

Emma Gillyon has written a book about Locky’s innate ability to be our favourite “social influencer”. A Box of Fluffy Ducks includes all of Locky’s upbeat sayings. Copies available for $10 at the Finance Office.

    Library Happenings

On Friday 20th November New Zealand authors Falstaff Dowling-Mitchell

(actor/teacher/author) and Michel Mulipola (professional wrestler/professional

gamer/comic book artist) visited Nelson College as part of the Storylines National

Story Tour. Almost 70 of our YR9/YR10 lads got to hear these two men’s inspiring

life stories, how they have got to write or illustrate books and how to achieve your

    dreams.

Falstaff’s talk included messages such as don’t keep saying you should do something

(like writing a story) but take action and make the time and make yourself do

it. Also, your life experiences – even the bad, horrid and ugly parts of your own life

are really valuable tools that can be used in your unique writing. And our lads

listened in awe to Michel (known as the Bloody Samoan) who has made a successful

career out of doing the things he loves.
