I unceremoniously dumped myself
back onto the beach.
We then rode our bikes to Seddonville,
Little Wanganui and other wonderful
places along deserted roads, sur-
rounded by healthy looking cows and
even the odd lamb.
Lots of canna lilies dotted the land-
scape. I was greatly impressed by a
magnificent rimu tree about 1000
years old just out of Karamea. The
sign said it would take an hour return
walk. Patsy and I are of average
fitness and we only took 40 minutes.

Dear Cathedralites,
There are many, many Good
Samaritans around in New Zealand.
Isn’t it interesting that a biblical phrase
is used to describe a person who stops
and offers help? Well, we were on the
receiving end of some special Good Sa-
maritans as Patsy and I drove back from
a caravaning holiday around Karamea.
The West Coast (Buller if I listened to
Bev Greig) has got stunning scenery. I
managed to bike an hour and a half up
the Heaphy Track and discovered that
it’s much easier to walk than to ride,
such is the rocky terrain. Then staying
at Gentle Annie further south I managed
to get myself in a number of uncompro-
mising positions as I tried to climb over
a headland to get back to the camp.
The huge rocks with the sea pounding
upon them were slippery and I was con-
science that being on my own that one
wrong foot could lead to disaster. After
about half an hour of careful navigation

John Laing
Hello All,
Well Spring has started to make its presence felt with warmer and longer days, mag-nolias are blooming along with camellias and our ever early daffodils, all of this en-courages me to shed some of my winter clothes for my lighter and brighter colours.
Unfortunately, with Covid 19 popping up again forcing the Cathedral as well as the rest of the country back to Level 2 we have had to make some slight changes with how we do things in Children’s church such as social distancing, any food events on hold, as well as sign in again and the children now coming in the side door thus al-lowing to separate congregations. The logic behind the side door entry being that it allows 100 parishioners access to the morning service.
The children are enjoying Children’s church as we look at Bible characters from the Old and New Testament and how God used them. All of these Biblical examples flew high with God but at other times in their lives allowed the “old human nature to rear its’ ugly head and hold sway in their decision making and actions. Sounds familiar ah.
The Second letter to Timothy 3:16 says “All Scripture is God-breathed and is use-ful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteous-ness,” so it’s such an encouragement for the children and in fact all of us to learn from these heroes of the Bible. Their examples of faith inspire us and their failures comfort us. (If these “Hall of Famers” in Hebrews chapter 11 stumble, then we don’t need to be hard on ourselves when we don’t get it right.)
The Family Fun Night (Halloween alternative) will be happening again this year on Saturday 31st October 5.00pm – 7.00pm I’m pleased to report that Emily Campbell (All Saints Children’s Ministry Worker) and our very own Teresa Coombs (representing Victory Church) are on our steering committee this year, but as always I need some helpers who can look after an activity for 2 hours on the evening. Can you help? Phone the Cathedral office on 548 1008 and let us know, sooner rather than later please.
We are still going ahead with our “Heroic” Children’s Holiday Programme from the 6th – 9th of October (Covid restrictions hopefully lessening or at least staying the same.) Your prayers would be greatly appreciated for all three of the above men-tioned ministries.
Thanks again for your continued support and encouragement of the Children’s Ministry of our Cathedral.
God bless you.

Just a quick footnote: After 21 years of ministry with OAC Ministries International, I officially resigned in August. I’m now ministering with a local parachurch organisation called Assist Ministries directed by Matthew Grant. Mathew is no stranger to our 7.00pm service attendees and has preached here on occasion.

Are you all right?
So how is your diary? Mine is a mess. Crossings out, rescheduling, replanning. All the routines
one takes for granted have to be thought out. And then when I go out, Nelson is Cone City.
Outside our home storm water drains are being replaced. They’ll be working here until Decem-
ber. A trip to the supermarket or the Cathedral takes 3 times as long. It seems as if 2020 has
been 2 steps forward and one back.
And then I count my blessings. During the Lockdown and the various levels I haven’t had to
negotiate the education system with children sitting exams. I don’t have my parents in a Rest
Home. I don’t have children overseas. So advice to myself is - Stick to a routine, take some
exercise, connect with family and friends and spend time on my favourite pastime - Family
History. It’s the ideal hobby in a Lockdown.
It’s always a good idea to focus on the things we can control if they seem too big or over-
whelming. While we may have become used to staying home if unwell, hand washing, cough-
ing or sneezing into our elbow, signing contact tracing forms and physical distancing, for many
of us wearing a mask or face covering when travelling on public transport is new territory.

‘Wearing is Caring’ so check out how to wear a face covering safely and then dispose of it
safely. A google check online will bring up a variety of information. I use the World Health
and NZ Health Department sites and have downloaded the WHO graphic for the Parish Nurse
notice board.
21-27 September is Mental Health Awareness Week so it is more timely than ever.
Feeling comfortable in your identity, values and beliefs helps you feel secure in who you are
and what you stand for. When you are content with yourself it is easier to cope with chal-
lenges, build strong whānau relationships and discover the things that uplift you.
As a member of the Cathedral Choir it was really stirring on Sunday, to sing the Hymn ‘Now
Thank We All Our God’ written by Martin Rinckart, a Lutheran minister in the 1600’s - a time
of political unrest and plague.
O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts and blessed peace to cheer us;
And keep us in His grace, and guide us when perplexed;
And free us from all ills, in this world and the next.
Blessings from Parish Nurse Judith

Neither of us want to brag but to lament that such an exaggeration turns people off an attempt to see the tree. When you see
a sign that says one hour, you immediately think ‘I don’t have 1 hour, so I won’t even try’. If it said 40 minutes, or better
still, 20 minutes each way, then many more tourists would make the effort. This is a little example of fake news!
Anyway, after a fantastic 10 days on the road, we were south of the Hope Saddle. I was asleep, Patsy was driving, and I was
suddenly awoken by a crash and grinding as the wheel on the caravan sheered off and the caravan ground its way down the
road. I was staggered to see that the wheel had sheered off the axle. Not long after Stu from Richmond Glass arrived and
helped me jack up the caravan. Twenty minutes later Sandy and Jo arrived and provided moral support. From there on for
the next 3 hours, from 7.00 - 11.30 pm cars would slow down and stop and ask if we were okay.
It’s a reminder that there are many, many Good Samaritans around in New Zealand and a lot of them from Nelson and the
West Coast Region. While I lament for secularisation of New Zealand, I still find it intriguing that we use the phrase ‘Good
Samaritan” to describe those who stop and help along the way. These people who stopped and others who offered were not
card-carrying Christians or church attenders, from the conversations I had with them. In fact, from the parable that Jesus
told, it was the religious lot who would fail to stop, rather than the irreligious. Its another reminder that Christians don’t have
a mortgage on being loving and compassionate and caring and all other Fruits of the Spirit. I only wish and pray that they
also will have a wonderful encounter with God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and they would further use their gen-
erosity and compassion in His name, for His creation.
It’s interesting that 2 days earlier in a remote part of the Heaphy, we stopped to help out a tourist who’d had a monstrous
blow out in his tubeless tire and had no tools to fix it. Meanwhile, our very special 40 year old caravan looked a pathetic
sight. I appreciated the wonderful time it afforded us for the previous 10 days. It’s good to say being on the receiving end is
wonderful, though being on the giving end provides a great and deep sense of
satisfaction. We experience both as pilgrims along the way.
In His service,
Mike

Farewell to Audrie and John Gill from Bishopdale Chapel Communicants
On Thursday 6 August at the regular 1st Thursday 11.15am service, the Bishopdale Chapel communicants said their farewell
to Audrie and John Gill who are preparing to return to England to be with family.
Richard Harris thanked them both for their loving and regular support since attending the AGM
of the Friends of Bishopdale in May 2011. As committee members they hardly missed a meeting
until it was disbanded in Feb 2016.
Audrie was a valued and regular reader and supplier of food when required. John was a welcomer
and handed out books and service sheets. They both kept the paths swept and free of leaves and
flowers, helped with the cleaning of the chapel (all that polishing) and John kept the glass on the
historical photos clean. Audrie and Elizabeth McKee Benbow researched the origin of the big
chairs (without success).
Richard concluded his thank you to them both with love and blessings. They will be missed. We
photographed them in front of the Font with its cover that they had both painted.
Well done, good and faithful servants. Matthew 25:23
Wow, just wow – this has to have been one of the friendliest Foundation Days ever. Great service – kids carrying banners, superb music.
Then our in-house catering stars Janet Smith and Nicky & Kay Calder did us proud. For the first time, we ate in the Cathedral itself, with two long tables tucked behind the organ pipes.
Amazing food appeared out of the kitchen. Around 80 people were fed with chicken stew with all the trimmings, followed by a divine trifle.
The Elliot family are back in NZ, so Zane and Karen were able to tell us a little about their missionary work.
Thanks everyone!

The August vestry meeting was held in the quiet room of the Cathedral on Tuesday the 18th. Apologies from Dean
Mike as he and Patsy were on leave. A welcome to Steve Perris for his first meeting as a Bishop appointed Clerical
Canon. An apology also from the Bishop.
The Vestry planning /retreat day has had to be postponed as the facilitator is Auckland based and not able to travel.
Hopefully some date in September or October. The objective is to share with our Bishop goals and
planning for the Cathedral and the Parish .
David Lucas reported on his negotiations to get our copying costs reduced..
Paul Chan, an Auckland based organist, is to come and play at the Trafalgar Day Service on the 18th October. Dean Mike has invited Sir Anand Satyanand to speak .
From the Fabric and Finance committee it was reported that repairs had been undertaken to the butanol on the roof to
stop the leaks. Although expensive we have little choice over that cost.
Discussion took place on the issue of suitable and available organists. Mark Patterson has moved to Dunedin. Kemp
English continues his tuition of our organists although he has relocated to the Wellington area.
We are grateful for our organists principally Jane and Patsy and others that make Cathedral standard music possible ,
Melanie and Colleen as well as our choir.
There are funds in the Deanery Trust available so Jenny will liaise with Patsy as to what is needed to keep the Dean-
ery up to a good standard. Graham O'Brien reported on the Earthquake Strengthening committee’s next step of meet-
ing with the engineers and architects to confirm further work and costing. On Health and Safety we noted the evacua-
tion trial had been held . Also that Jocelyn had volunteered to be our H&S Advocate and Safe Here Coordinator
Many thanks for all Jocelyn does . We agreed to a role change description to Cathedral Building Manager for
Jocelyn. Permission was given for the Cathedral Tower to be illuminated pink by the Breast Cancer Foundation for
their October appeal. We noted of course the changes that have been made to the Communion Service procedures ;
spacing ,wafer only , no cup of tea in line with Level 2 restrictions.
It was also agreed the current structure of Vestry would remain for another 4 years until the funding of the Earth-
quake Strengthening project became clear.
The meeting begins and ends in prayer and we are grateful for God’s gift of the Cathedral to us and pray we will con-
tinue to use it in manner worthy of the traditions we have been handed down and to reflect in worship the Grace and
goodness of our Creator.
Since Vestry we have had the death of Rev Graeme Brady and we wish to record our sympathy to Penny and her family. Graeme was not only known for his financial leadership in the Anglican Church but also as a priest of the
highest calibre. He will be missed by many.
In these disrupted times perhaps it is appropriate in conclusion to repeat parts of Edward Carpenter’s poem
“The Lake of Beauty” from page 157 of our NZ Prayer book:
Let your mind be quiet, realising the beauty of the world,
and the immense ,the boundless treasures that it holds in store.
All that you have within you ,all that your heart desires,
all that your Nature so specifically fits you for -that or the
counterpart of it waits embedded in the great Whole for you,
it will surely come to you.” …..
Do not recklessly spill the waters of your mind
In this direction and in that.
lest you become like a spring lost and
dissipated in the desert.
I do recommend you read the whole poem
Thank you for your participation in, and support for our Cathedral community
Kind regards Graham Allan Warden
