Neil’s Notes

Spring has Sprung

I am sure Club members will be pleased to welcome Spring, after

what has been a cold and damp Winter. I trust this new season

brings good health and happiness to you all!

Well last week was a much quieter one for us all after the incredible

efforts of the Kopenang Fundraiser and the Cancer Council Daffodil

Day. This week we extend thanks to Chris de Zylva for arranging last week’s speaker Dr Bhuvan Unhelker. Bhuvan enlightened us with his summary of Rotary work throughout the world and its impact on him.

This week also saw the official changeover of the NOVUS Board. We wish David Rus-sell, John Collins and Terry Hodge all the best as they take on Directorships, joining John Cameron and Rochelle Wiley who are continuing their tenure. Once again we thank Garry Webb, Peter Smith and Richard Pitt for their incredible service over the past decade.

This week the Club meets at St Edmund’s School at 7:15 for a 7:30 start. Special thanks to Past President Marlene who is standing in for me, as I will be away at the Gold Coast for the week running our major International Conference. This annual event is a special one for our Club and cements a long running relationship between St Edmund’s and the Rotary Club of Wahroonga. St Edmund’s and St Lucy’s are part of our Club’s DNA so I encourage a strong turnout.

Best wishes to Club members who are also travelling in coming weeks: David Russell, who is travelling through Europe; John Collins, who is over in England for his daugh-ter’s wedding; Barry Edmundson, who I believe, is in South Africa; and George Richards, who is spending 5 weeks in Europe.

I look forward to seeing you all again on 14th September when we have an inspiring

Last week at Warrawee with Dr Bhuvan Unhelkar BE, MBA, MSc, PhD, FACS, CBAP and Rotarian from Sarasota, Florida, USA

Bhuvan nominated Gerry Guthrie, the paddle pop man, for a Rotary Pride of Workmanship Award for 10 yrs of helping 202 Knox students cross the road each day. They have been good friends ever since.

Ghandi exemplified the principle of service above self.

Bhuvan with good friend, Chris de Zylva, who inducted him into St Ives Rotary 14 yrs ago and President Neil.

Rotary ideals and projects guided him with his students who earned many practical skills in addition to MBAs through being involved directly with service above self.

In the 1920’s Paul Harris hoped to have 22,000 Rotarians in 10-20 years. With much work now there are 1.2m members around the world. Numbers alone do not reflect success. There needs to be a differ-ent metric to define how you make an organisation successful in the long term.

With 17 books written and 2 more nearly completed, Bhuvan is very busy.

Page 3: Neil’s Notes

Bhuvan is happy to hear from anyone

who is visiting Sarasota Florida,

Tampa is 1 hr away or Miami 3 hrs —

[email protected]

Bhuvan has had a life-time of service

and mentoring others to follow the

same ideals learned from Rotary over

Chris’ vote of thanks for a most thought

provoking presentation.

Correction from last week’s report p2—delete vulcanisation replace with

volcanism (from volcanos). Mark will send on his images to go with his notes.

This week - Simone Kiprioti Senior Program KLA Coordinator

St. Edmund’s College Wahroonga

Simone has taught at St. Edmund’s College for the past 10 years and has worked mainly with the Years 11 and 12 students in the work skills area. She has coordinated the Work Experience and TAFE program and written courses such as Pathways to Work; a course specifically tailored to the student’s need for independence post school. At pre-sent she is teaching a course called Community and Family Studies which teaches essential skills for the student’s

transition into Adulthood.

Simone and her team ensure that students have access to

TAFE courses outside of school and opportunities for work experience in a variety of workplaces through the College’s

Work Experience Program that runs weekly in Year 12.

Simone is passionate about the authentic application of living and work skills and has overseen the dynamics of an ever changing Senior Program. The current climate neces-sitates support of parents through the NDIS (the National Disability Insurance Scheme) which allows students every opportunity to help set and achieve their goals post school. Simone believes in the ability of all her students and the strong foundations of independence that are laid during

their time at St. Edmund’s College.

Simone will explain how St. Edmund’s prepares their stu-dents for life post school and some of the pathways of past

students.

Membership - Let’s grow Wahroonga Rotary Our Rotary International President is keen to increase Rotary membership and fellowship with the message: "we need more willing hands, more caring hearts and more bright minds to move our work forward. But those hands, hearts and minds won't magically appear in our clubs. We

have to ask them to join."

The reason why Rotary is such a successful organisation is because it is full of members that have one trait in common - the passion to make a difference in the world. All of us share this passion and it's what drives us to work together. Even though our club may have an open door policy, many prospective members interested in joining still might be hesitant to come and visit. At the end of the day, it's up to us to open the door to new members by asking people to join. What's your membership goal this year? All of us know at least one per son who may be a good fit for Rotary, whether that person be a colleague, family member, or friend - all we have to do is

ask. Helen Clarke, Membership Chair
