SNOW HITS STEPHENS GROVE!

February 2011

Where City Life Meets Country Living

Share your family photos with your Stephens Grove neighbors...especially when we have major events like SNOW! Maybe your child received a spe-cial award or you celebrated a milestone anniversary or birth-day. We would love to share in your joy. Email your picture to [email protected] in JPEG format!

Neighbors,

Welcome to the New Year.

The Annual meeting was held January 26th at the Huntersville Town Hall. Despite being told to leave the building

via loud speaker at 8:30pm, it was a good meeting. I believe that the neighborhood was well represented; a quo-rum was achieved (with some help of proxies) and the audience was not shy.

I would like to thank Paul Sousa for his two years of service to the neighborhood. Paul decided to not seek re-election and will be missed. Paul brought a lot of BOD experiences from sitting on past boards in other communi-ties and was a valued sounding board for me when asked…What do you think about this situation?

There were7 candidates looking to fill 3 available seats: Randi Breault, Keith Crawford, Jeremy Hall, David McAlexander, Chris Zangara, Paul Comesky and John Hayes. It was nice to see these many neighbors looking to volunteer their time for Stephens Grove.

The Election Results for terms from 2011 – 2013 are: David McAlexander and Chris Zangara were reelected and-Paul Comesky was elected.

The Board Members now consist of:

Some topics of discussion in the meeting were the financial report – the HOA is in good financial shape with strong reserves and only minimal of outstanding dues. Following the financial discussion, which went off topic (thank you for covering David), was very informative. Items discussed were: the resurfacing of the pool and monies reserved for it, differences between budgeted and actual expenses on a few line items, a clubhouse upgrade - where it is in the priority list, financial accounting process, need for more effective communication tool (Facebook was discussed) and the possible establishment of a Com-munication Committee. Of Note: The Social Committee is looking for a few good volunteers. If anyone is inter-ested, please contact the Board. One other key topic centered on the current issue with a communication tower erected on Perthshire Court over the Holiday season. The BOD has been working the situation with the Town of Huntersville, American Tower and has responded through our HOA attorney on the replacement proposal to American Tower. Please stay tuned for updates on this item.

The perennial issue of dog poop was brought up as well as the need to ensure that shrubs, trees, and cars do not encroach on sidewalks / streets.

Please continue to reach out to your neighborhood blockheads and Board members with your questions or con-cerns. Visit the Stephens Grove WEB Site for up to date information on what’s going on in your community.

Thank you,

Bob Brethen

Halloween Festival & Parade

On Saturday 10/30 the Stephens Grove Annual

Halloween Festival &

Parade were held.

Tracy

Zhiss and Julie Donnelly did another

awesome job of providing food, fun, games and a

hayride for all residents to enjoy. It was a beautiful

day for our neighborhood ghosts and goblins to

march around the club-house.

Mr. David Brown provided

the hayride for us again this

year.

Karen Dort-

shy’s daugh-

ters did a wonderful job of loading and unloading the

wagon and getting all the waivers signed. And new

neighbors Desirae Butler and her husband who

helped Julie Donnelly in the food tent.

Many thanks to all the

great volunteers – Trini & Ally Marinello, Erica Gil-

reath, Patty Crawford,

Marie DeMartino & Jana Madera.

Kids Holiday Party

We held our 1st ever Kids Christmas Party, Sunday,

Decem-ber 5th

from 2:30-

4:30. The chil-

dren visited with Santa in the clubhouse (many

thanks to Jenna Peck) and

had hot cocoa. Then they braved the freezing tem-

peratures to decorate homemade sugar cookies,

make holiday photo frame orna-

ments, have

their faces

painted.

Many thanks to Erin Bil-liard, Kathy Fajerman,

Patty Crawford, Marie De-Martino, Marielle Gauther

and thank you Paul San-tos for retrieving our pro-

pane heater and Tom De-Martino for running out

and getting new propane tanks.

Adult Holiday Party

The Adult Holiday Party was held Friday, Decem-

ber 10th from 8-11pm. We didn’t have the turn-

out we had hoped for but the residents who came

had a great time! Many

thanks to Kathy Fajerman and Tom & Marie DeMar-

tino for all their hard work on this event!

A Fond Farewell

Please join us in saying goodbye to Marie DeMar-

tino who served as the Social Committee Chair.

Marie is resigning from the committee this year.

Thank you for all your hard work and dedication!

Happy 2011, Stephens Grove Residents!

It may seem like summer is a long time away…but it will be here before you know it! I can say for cer-tain that I am ready for some sun and fun! I can hardly wait for the day when the pool cover comes off and the preparations for opening day begin! We had a great 2010 season and I feel sure that 2011 will be even better. As you are all probably aware, we made quite a few updates concerning the pool last summer. Who didn’t love the ‘resort blue water’ after our new pump system was installed?

Thanks to all who were re-sponsible for getting the SG Swim Team, the Dol-phins, up and running. It was very well received and our first showing as swim meet host went swim-mingly (sorry, I couldn’t resist). Traffic manage-ment, everyone’s biggest concern, was handled per-fectly with the hiring of an off duty Police Officer. Thanks to our BOD for their support.

Because of all the work done to the pool/pool area in 2010, we have not had any off seasons repairs to deal with for the first time in years!

Stay tuned for the next SG Newsletter….there will be more information for the upcoming season, and, of course, your handy Pool Calendar! In the meantime, if you have any questions, suggestions, etc., please feel free to contact me!

Ladies Night Out went to Flat Iron in Davidson on December 14, 2010.

Ongoing Social Event Stephens Grove Ladies, are you looking for a little time to yourself? Would like to meet a few other ladies in the neighborhood? Join us at Ladies Night Out! Sign up for email updates on the neighborhood website to hear about the next night out. Ladies Night Out has visited the following res-taurants in 2010: TGI Friday’s, Prickly Pear, Eez Fusion, North Harbor Club, 131 Main, O’Charley’s, Hickory Tavern, Alton’s Kitchen, Micky’s Bistro, The Creole House, The Melting Pot and FlatIron.

The first Stephens Grove Holiday Open House on November 13, 2010 turned out to be

a fun and successful event. With over 19 ven-dors participating, our residents and local

community had the opportunity to shop for gifts galore and tackle their holiday shopping

lists. It was great to visit with neighbors and learn more about their business and/or tal-ented trade. Guests shopped children’s acces-

sories, food, home décor, jewelry, make-up, photography, and scrapbooking solutions to

name a few. I would like to thank the social committee and the Stephens Grove Board

members for the continued support behind this event. Last, but not least, I would like to thank each of the vendors for participating and

to those of you who joined forces with me to execute this idea and turn it into a successful

affair. For additional information on vendors and/or to contact a particular vendor for prod-

ucts, please contact Jenn Skovran at (704) 947-9504 or [email protected].

Golf Carts and Unlicensed Vehicle Use in Stephens Grove Friends and Neighbors, We live in a wonderful neighborhood where people are generally respectful of others and our streets are safe for all, but some recent events in Stephens Grove and the surrounding community should make us reconsider. During the recent snow storm, many children got to play in the snow in the streets. Some others, including some adults, decided it would be fun to use our streets, common ar-eas and private yards to drive golf carts and four wheelers. This is not only a safety concern but shows complete disrespect for the property of others.

By current law, driving golf carts on our streets is NOT legal; the only legal unlicensed vehicles are scooters or cycles less than 50cc’s for operators 16 years and over. Thousands of golf cart related in-juries are recorded every year and a significant percentage of those injuries involve underage opera-tors and passengers. Three underage boys were recently hospitalized in another Huntersville subdi-vision.

Although use of golf carts in Stephens Grove is not technically legal, it is a tolerated privilege in the hands of responsible adults. Joy riding children and teenagers should not be tolerated. We have a choice, we can police ourselves and maintain the unofficial privilege of responsible golf cart use on our streets, or we can let the law handle it and say goodbye to the golf carts for everyone. The choice should be obvious; a little parental control will go a long way. Let’s keep our neighborhood a safe and respectful place. Keep your underage golf cart users and other illegal off road vehicles off our streets.
