Negation is when you don’t have or don’t do

something.

In German, there are two different ways to negate. Both of them depend on what you are negating.

The words for negation are kein and nicht.

The word that is used for negating a noun is kein, while the word for negating a verbs is nicht.

Ich habe einen Hund. Ich habe keinen Hund. I have no dog.

Sie ist klug. She is smart. Sie ist nicht klug. She is not smart.

While both kein and nicht are “no” in German, kein is the only one that is used in negation of nouns.

The easiest way it will fit into any sentence is if you have “ein” words.einen - keinen (male noun that follows)eine - keine (female noun that follows)ein - kein (neutral noun that follows)

Ich habe k/ein Buch. I have no/a book.

Du hast k/eine Freundin.You have no/a girlfriend.

Er hat k/einen Bleistift. He has no/a pencil.

Nicht is used for negating a verb. Unlike popular belief, you do not use nicht at the end of a sentence.

Das ist nicht alles.

Dein Hund ist sehr alt.Dein Hund ist nicht sehr alt.
