A Coruña (in Galician A Coruña, in Spanish La Coruña, historically in English Corunna) is a province of extreme northwestern Spain, in the northwestern part of the autonomous community of Galicia. It is bordered by the province of Lugo to the east and Pontevedra to the south, and by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Bay of Biscay to the north.
The province's population was 1,126,064 in 2002. It has an area of 7,876 km². The population density is approximately 142.97/km². Its capital is the city of A Coruña, which contains slightly more than one-fifth (243,349) of the population of the province. Other major cities in the province include the capital of the autonomous community, Santiago de Compostela, with a population 92,919, and Ferrol, population 77,859. Santiago de Compostela (2004 pop. 92,298) is the capital of the autonomous community of Galicia. The city's cathedral is the destination of the important medieval pilgrimage route, the Way of St James (in Spanish the Camino de Santiago), which is still walked today. The prevailing wind from the Atlantic and the surrounding mountains combine to give Santiago some of Europe's highest rainfall: about 66 inches annually.
TEOThe municipality of Teo has 14,071 inhabitants spread in sixteen different villages and hamlets. It is located very near to Santiago de Compostela, between the villages of Padrón and Vedra along the river Ulla. Its main economic activity is agriculture.
The landscape along the river Ulla is very characteristic. It is a typical rural Galician area comprised of great pines and oaks. The main crops in the area are corn and vines. In fact, the Ribeiro denomination of wines comes from the vines planted in the riverside of the Rio Ulla. Another characteristic crop of the area is the famous Pimientos de Padrón (Padron peppers), also subjected to a quality mark.
Scattered through the area we can see beautiful Pazos, typical Galician manor houses, and Orreos, classical constructions for storing the grain and food.
