FEATURES AND BENEFITS

18 - 8 Stainless steel was developed in Japan specifically for the manufacture of end-drilled eyelesssurgical needles. Highly advanced metallurgical technology was used to develop this superior

austenitic steel. The material is tempered for optimum strength and flexibility.

The 18 - 8 material has some superb qualities, which include a CLASS 1 rating on rusting, whichindicates that it does not rust at all, unlike most surgical steels.

The material can be precisely sharpened on the points and cutting edges, and when polished, thematerial has a bright lustre. The extra-smooth finish dramatically reduces the resistance of theneedle passage through tough and dense tissue.

Silicone coatings are not used on 18 - 8 stainless steel needles; they do not need this lubricant.

Advanced laser technology, capable of drilling needles as small as 4mm, is used on the end drillingof 18 - 8 stainless steel surgical needles. The complete range of SCIMITAR* sutures uses enddrilled needles; none are the outdated channel-swaged type.

SCIMITAR* has a comprehensive range of needle types, shapes and sizes to meet the surgeon’ssuture requirements. These are attached to 8 different material types.

18 - 8 needles are tempered to ensure flexibility and ductility. It is very important that a needlebends rather than breaks. Bending tests carried out on various round-bodied needles will clearlyshow the advantages of these 18 - 8 needles over other competitive surgical needles.

MICRO-OPTIC*SPATULA NEEDLES:

(Epee*) Flat body needles are used on soft, easilypenetrated tissue. The body of the needle isflattened to improve the grip of the needle holderand stabilize the needle.

TAPER POINT NEEDLES: (Epee* Cardiac)Fine body needles are used for cardiovascularand vascular surgery, where the needle wirediameter size is as close to suture thread diameteras possible. This is required when a very smallhole needs to be made and minimum bleedingis required. In microsurgery very small needlesof this type are used.

(Micro-Optic*) This needle is used in ophthalmicanterior surgery, where the needle needs to bethin and flat and very sharp, to ensure easy pass-age through tissue such as cornea and sclera.

MICRO-OPTIC* REVERSE CUTTING NEEDLES:(Micro-Optic*) The cutting edge is on the outercurve, and these very sharp, honed needles areideal for ophthalmic surgery.

This needle has a tapered body with a sharpenedcutting tip. Used on tough tissue where a cuttingtip is required and a narrow-bodied needle desired.

(SN-Dolphin*) The needle has a round body witha rounded blunt point. These needles weredesigned for use on friable tissue, like the liver,and their use has been extended to coveraccidental puncturing of surgical gloves, andneedle stick. This gives the surgeon some addedprotection when working on Aids related patients.

(Derma-cut*) The cutting edge is on the outercurve, used on tissue that is tough and difficultto penetrate. An additional honing process iscarried out on needles used for plastic andcosmetic surgery.

(Derma-cut*) These needles have two opposingcutting edges with a third on the inside curve ofthe needle. The body of the needle is flattened.

PLAIN & CHROMICCATGUT SUTURES

FEATURES & BENEFITS

High quality free-range beef serosa ribbons are selected for maximum uniform tensile strength.

Enzymatic and mechanical cleaning ensures exceptionally high levels of collagen purity for

optimal in vivo performance.

The ribbons selected for chromic catgut sutures are treated prior to spinning with buffered

chromium salt solution. This results in a dark brown suture with a predictable strength and an

even uniform in vivo absorption. Plain catgut is a natural product and is pale yellow.

Electronic tension controlled spinning, an exact humidity and temperature controlled drying

process, combined with electronic gauging and high-speed centre polishing ensures a

strong, extremely smooth and highly uniform suture.

The electronically polished catgut, to tolerances of 0.004mm, ensures an exact surface

smoothness for great handling and smooth passage through tissue. This causes minimal

trauma and creates dependable knot run down and knot strength.

Available in sizes USP 2 (6 metric) to USP 6/0 (1 metric), softened with glycerine.

Non-needle products are available in 1.50-metre lengths and a range of needle suture products

on 18-8 stainless steel needles.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

Viamac* has the major advantage of being a pure polymer derived from Glycolic acid, finely

braided and coated with the co-polymers of Glycolide, Lactide and Calcium Stearate.

The coating (GLC366) bonds naturally with the thread, which reduces surface friction

and glides through tissue with minimal trauma.

The coating virtually eliminates ‘chattering’ during tie-down, and the occurrence of knot locking.

Precise knot placing is enhanced and the number of knots required to ensure full knot security

is less than that required by co-polymer products. The knots snug down and hold fast.

Viamac* gives maximum support through the critical first few days of wound support and has

a higher level of support until the wound-healing process is complete, then rapid absorption

takes place. The loss of tensile strength at all stages is very predictable.

In vivo degradation of Viamac* occurs by hydrolysis.

The pure PGA formulation gives a super-soft suture, which handles like silk.

The inherent softness makes the suture virtually memory-free and reduces the effect of

kinks and flat spots during the winding process.

There is minimal tissue reaction, with excellent cosmetic results.

The product meets USP standards on all gauges of braided synthetic absorbable material.

the absorption process.

Natural silk from the Bombyx Mori silk worm consisting of 70% fibre and 30% gum. These fine

strands are de-gummed prior to braiding, which retains the silk's body and elasticity, creating

ideal handling characteristics, or ‘hand’, as it is commonly called.

The manufacturing process produces a tightly braided silk strand with a uniform diameter resulting

in a predictable and reliable high-tensile strength.

The firm strand is uniformly coated with either silicon or a bees wax / paraffin wax combination.

This process enhances the performance of the silk as it passes through tissue. The smooth

coated silk ties down easily and the knots lie flat and hold securely.

The coating process minimizes the possibility of the transmission of infection along the length

of the strand.

Available in sizes USP 2 to USP 6/0 on a range of needled codes.

In sizes USP 3 to USP 4/0 on a range of pre-cut standard lengths.

Available in logwood black and also in white on selected items.

Macron* braided polyester gives maximum strength and flexibility for superior results in

Cardiovascular, Vascular and Orthopaedic surgery.

Macron's manufacturing process gives the polyester superior softness and compliance for

maximum surgical hand. The firm round nature of the material combined with 18 - 8 stainless

steel laser drilled needles are the ultimate for use in cardiovascular surgery.

The coating forms a cohesive bonding with the polyester. The coating does not form beads,

flake or sheds and is a superb lubricant, which aids the sutures passage through tissue, similar

to that of a monofilament.

Macron* coated braided polyester has long-term retention of strength in vivo.

As with other synthetic sutures, knot-tying security requires the proven standard surgical technique

of square ties with additional throws as indicated by surgical circumstances.

Available in sizes USP 5 to USP 5/0 on needled items.

Available in sizes USP 5 on pre-cut lengths.

PRO-VEIN*Monofilament Polypropylene Sutures


PRO-VEIN* is made from the polymer of propylene, which is extruded to form a strong,

smooth and uniform surgical suture. There is greatly reduced memory and ‘pigtailing’ in this

superb monofilament suture.

PRO-VEIN* polypropylene sutures are inert, supple and handle well. Owing to its controlled

elongation, the knots lie flat and lock against each other, giving excellent knot security.

There is minimal tissue drag and tissue trauma, which allows for easy placement and removal.

PRO-VEIN* is as inert as steel, and because it is unaffected by tissue enzymes, the strands

provide prolonged tensile strength, even in infected areas.

As with other synthetic sutures, knot-tying security requires the proven standard technique of

square ties with additional throws, as indicated by surgical circumstances.

As with other monofilaments, bacterial migration is greatly reduced.

Available in sizes USP 2 to USP 7/0 on a range of needled items.

All PRO-VEIN* sutures are attached to 18 - 8 stainless steel needles for maximum strength

and durability.

PLEASE NOTE: The surgeon should take care not to damage the suture thread when handling

polypropylene products. Therefore the suture thread should not be gripped with the needle holders.

NYLONBlue Monofilament Polyamide 6 Sutures


SCIMITAR* has a new dark blue Polyamide 6 nylon suture that is an exceptionally strong,

smooth and pliable monofilament suture. The nylon is extruded to very stringent tolerances

during the manufacturing process, giving it a uniform diameter along the complete length

of the suture.

The material is very smooth and pliable and does not require a lubricant, as it slides easily

through tissue. The nylon, because of its smoothness and even diameter, makes knot-tying and

placement very simple. The nylon is easy to remove after the wound-healing process is complete,

which is very advantageous to the patient.

The SCIMITAR* nylon's strength exceeds USP tensile strength and knot pull requirements

by a huge percentage.

This material has very high in vivo tensile strength and does not support bacterial growth across

the cut line when closing skin or subcuticular layers. Nylon is only mildly irritating to tissue.

SCIMITAR* nylon is available in sizes USP 2 to USP 7/0 on a range of 18 - 8 stainless steel

surgical needles.
