PUSH: PRAY UNTIL SOMETHING HAPPENS Jessee Caleb recalls entering into a period of transformation during the spring that he attended the Needle’s Eye Young Professionals Group (YPG). It was around that same time that he had been working more than 50 hours a week at a local hospital as a medical social worker – suffering from burnout, bitterness and feeling unappreciated. Community had been something that Jessee desired but felt too tired to seek out. Oftentimes, Jessee felt trapped between the drive to do his best work and the weariness produced by working too many hours. “I felt so exhausted all of the time - too exhausted to do anything. All I ever wanted to do was to go home and be alone.” As his discontentment grew, he realized he needed to make some changes. It was then that he committed to a YPG session. “I remember when Janis Hannuksela discussed the concept of P.U.S.H. (Pray Until Something Happens) one night. I never thought I’d really use this concept, but it proved to be the most powerful tool when it came to my career and my life.” As Jessee prayed for patience and humility at work, he saw doors unexpectedly open. Jessee recalls the day when two former work colleagues called him to say they were recommending him for a new position at another company. Four interviews and almost three weeks later, Jessee was offered a position on the spot. Today, Jessee sees how praying until something happens has changed his work situation as well as the rest of his life. “God has greatly delivered me professionally and personally, and YPG helped propel that process of deliverance.” Having found that balance, Jessee is exploring options for additional education. NEEDLE’S EYE NEWS YOUNG PROFESSIONALS GROUP - New Session! Starts Tues., Oct. 16 through Dec. 4 from 6-8 PM. Cost is $30. USING EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO LEARNPam Toliver wasn’t always a job hunting and resume pro. After Pam was laid off from a local pharmaceutical company, a friend connected her with the Needle’s Eye Career Transition Group (CTG) and Crossroads Career Explorers. “Before Crossroads, I spent countless hours applying for jobs with no purpose in mind,” she said. “I made all of the classic mistakes, not knowing how to advocate for myself or network effectively with others.” In the midst of looking for work, Pam became a Crossroads facilitator. She recalls, “I first volunteered at Needle’s Eye to learn how to become more marketable. However, God had bigger plans. He used this opportunity to show me that my purpose wasn’t about gaining experience for my own benefit, but to help others.” In addition to facilitating Crossroads, Pam has served as a career mentor for the Crossroads alumni: coaching them before interviews, sending information on job fairs and networking events, along with providing materials on resume writing, informational meetings and how to stay focused. Pam recently produced and co-hosted a cable access program called Get Back to Work RVA that centered on resources available for job seekers who have limited skills, education or other workplace barriers.Recently, just as Pam’s unemployment benefits were exhausted, she received a call from CARITAS offering her a position as a Career Development Manager for their Works program. Her new position focuses on helping men from The Healing Place, a homeless shelter and long-term addiction recovery program, find employment. “Empowering others to take action and helping them to improve the quality of their lives is what encourages me.” She ponders, “You know, I couldn’t have learned that had I not gone through this season of unemployment. What a gift.”

CROSSROADS CAREER EXPLORERSCrossroads is a seven-week, Christ-centered workshop for job-seekers. Using a six-step process and “Explorer Guide,” discover how to find your calling and purpose, prepare resumes, prep for interviews and more!

New Session! Starts Tues., Oct. 3 through Nov. 14 from 2-3:30 PM. Cost is $30. Contact Lisa Rattner at [email protected] or visit www.needleseye.org for details.
