G U R L E Y F A M I L Y R E C E I V E S L L O Y D B R I D G E S A W A R D The Gurley family have been long time supporters of the Kenton County 4-H Program. Kara and Brian both participated in 4-H as youth and continue to participate as adult leaders and volunteers. Growing up, Kara enjoyed showing market lambs, going to local and state 4-H events, attending teen programs, attending camp and entering various projects in the fair. Brian started his 4-H involvement by volunteering as a 4-H camp counselor and his volunteerism has grown from there. He currently serves as the chairperson for the client protection committee and enjoys assisting with the country ham projects. Kara serves on the 4-H livestock committee and is a club leader. She enjoys introducing new families to all the fun that 4-H has to offer. Kara and Brian are not only active in 4-H they also enjoy supporting events at their children’s school and are active participants at their church. Brian is a member of the Knights of Saint John Commandry and serves as a volunteer firefighter in his local area. Kara serves as the secretary for the Kenton County fair board and is active in bringing autism awareness and support to the Northern Kentucky area. Brian and Kara have four small children who aren’t quite old enough to participate as full fledged 4-H’ers yet, but are gaining quite a bit of experience as Cloverbuds. The Gurley family is honored to receive the Lloyd Bridges 4-H Family Award and look forward to many more years of 4-H adventures!

A young person in Kentucky may join 4-H at the age of nine and continue his/her participation up through age 18. The age of a young person is determined by the age he/she is on January 1 of the program year. In 2006, this general policy was revisited and a clarification was put in place, particularly for the upper end of the age range. It becomes especially important when issues of fairness regarding competition are in question. Our ultimate goal is to offer the 4-H experience to as many Kentucky youth as possible.

Program Year: As of September 1, 2006, the “ 4-H Program Year” in Kentucky is September 1 through August 31. The 4-H Program Year is twelve months in duration.

Upper end of age range: Kentucky 4-H Age is the young person’s age on January 1 of the current program year. On January 1 of the current program year, a youth must be 18 years old or younger to participate in 4-H during that 4-H Program Year. When a youth is 19 years of age on or before January 1 of the current 4-H Program Year, that youth has completed his/her 4-H eligibility and may not participate in 4-H during the current 4-H Program Year.

For the 2018-19 Program year, if a young person's date of bir th is... Jan 1 - Dec. 31, 2009, his/her 4-H age is 9

Jan 1 - Dec. 31, 2008, his/her 4-H age is 10

4-H CROSS COUNTY LINES POLICY

Kenton County 4-H Council will address cross county lines concerns for the 2018-2019 program year during their regular November 19 meeting. All requests to exit or enter a program must be received in writing and turned in to Diane Kelley, at the Extension Office by 4:30 p.m. on 11/19/2018. As a general rule, a young person becomes a 4-H member within the county where he/she is a resident or attends school. Participation close to home usually allows the young person and his/her family to become more fully engaged in 4-H and more actively involved in the greater community. The family involved may bring to the November 4-H Council meeting as well. Generally, where a young person participates in 4-H becomes an issue when competition is involved; where a young person is a member becomes important to fair and ethical competition. It is assumed that a young person is a member of 4-H in the county of residence or county where the young person attends school. To compete as part of any other county’s 4-H program, a transfer of membership must be clearly established through a request by the member, approval by the agents and councils involved, and appropriate documentation. Determination of whether a young person may cross a county line is to be completed on a case by case basis by the agents and councils involved.

Sincerely, County Extension Agents
