Withthearrivalofspring,manyeducatorsoftenbeginthecountdowntotheendoftheschoolyear;however,ithasbeenmyexperiencethatschoollibrariansbegintolookforwardtoattendingtheannualNebraskaEducationalTechnologyAssociation’sannualconference.Thisyear’sNETAthemeisPearlsofWisdom.Itisanopportunitytohonethetechnologicalaspectofourcraftwiththeunderstandingthatitisnotthetechnologyweusethatengagesstudentsbutratherhowweteachthatallowsthosestudentstobecreatorsoftheirowncontentwiththetechnologicaltoolswegivethem.

newmotivationandideastobringtomyteachersandstudents.IensurethattheexperiencesIhavearebroughtbacktoteachersandsharedwithadministration.IhavealsoattendedtheNLA/NSLAjointconferencefortwoyears.ItwasalsoagreatexperienceandIwasabletoconnectwithmanyschoollibrariansandmeetothermembersofNSLA.IalsoattendedtheNSLASchoolLibrariansDayatMahoneyStateParkthispastyearandfounditverybeneficialtoconnectandnetworkwithotherschoollibrarians.IwouldlovefortheNSLAtoproceedwiththeirplansforamentoringprogramfornewschoollibrariansandwouldhelptomovethisforwardifelected.Iwillcontinuemymembershipintheseorganizationsandcontinuetoconnectwithothersthathavethesamepassionfortechnology,readingandteaching.IwillcontinuetobringmyperspectiveasanewschoollibrariantoothersandadvocateforthisprofessionifelectedtotheNSLAboard.IamhonoredtobeconsideredacandidatefortheNSLAboard.

IamthePK-12MediaSpecialistandTechnologyCoordinatoratAxtellCommunitySchool,asmallpublicschoolinsouthcentralNebraska.Thisismy4thyearinthispositionandmy5thyearteaching.IamcurrentlyworkingtowardmyMaster’sdegreeinInstructionalTechnologywithanemphasisontheSchoolLibrarianattheUniversityofNebraskaatKearney.Ithasbeenagradualprocesstoacclimatemyselftothevariousrolesandresponsibilitiesasateacherlibrarian,butIamveryhappywithalltheopportunitiesI’vebeengiven.I’mpassionateaboutcreativityandexpressionandenjoynewchallenges.Ilovethatthereisalwayssomethingnewtolearnandtryoutwithmystudentsandstaff.ThroughtheNSLAandlocalschoollibrariannetworks,Ihavegrownprofessionallyandinturnbroughtmanyusefulresourcestomydistrict.Istrivetokeepcreatinglearningopportunitiesformystudentsandstaffsothattheyarebetterpreparedtofacenewchallenges.Withmystudentsandstaff,andthroughmyprofessionalnetworks,Iwillcontinuetoencouragelifelonglearningthatchallengesyesterday’sstatusquosandpromotesequityandrespectforeveryperson.IwillbringaneagerandopenmindtotheNSLAandsharethegoodthingsthatarehappeningeverydayinourlibraries.

IamexcitedabouttheopportunitytoservetheNebraskaSchoolLibraryAssociationbyrepresentingthemembersontheNSLABoard.Iaminterestedinprovidingstudents,teachers,andourlargercommunitieswiththenecessarytoolstobecomelifelonglearners.Schoollibrariesareinaperfectpositiontodeliverresourcesinamultitudeofformatsandprovidethenecessarysupporttoutilizethemeffectively.Ihavebeenan
educatorfor25years.IamcurrentlytheLibraryServicesDepartmentHeadforMillardPublicSchoolsinOmaha.Previously,Ihaveservedthisdistrictasaninstructionaltechnologyfacilitator,ahighschoollibrarian,andanelementarylibrarian.Ihaveopenedtwoschoollibrariesintwobrandnewbuildings.PriortoworkinginNebraska,Iwasanintermediateschoollibrarian,amiddleschoolLanguageArtsteacher,andanelementaryclassroomteacherinthird,fifthandsixthgrades.Ihavealsoopenedtwoschoollibrariesintwobrandnewbuildings.AfterparticipatingintheNxtWaveprogram,inFebruaryof2017,IreceivedmyDoctorofEducationwithanemphasisinSchoolLibrariesfromtheUniversityofNebraskaatOmaha.IalsoholdaMasterofScienceinEducationalLeadershipandInstructionfromUNO,aMasterofLibrarySciencefromKentStateUniversity,andaBachelorofScienceinEducationfromKansasStateUniversity.IamamemberofNSLA,AASL,ALA,andNETA.

IamthePreK-12schoollibrarian,districtassessmentcoordinator,andtechnologyintegrationspecialistatSheltonPublicSchools.Myfirsttwoyearsofteachingwereataone-roomschoolinBooneCounty,whereItaughtallsubjectstoKindergartenthrougheighthgrade.IhavebeenatSheltonsince2000,asanelementaryteacherandthenastheschoollibrariansince2005.Duringmytimeasschoollibrarian,Ihavetaughtjuniorhighkeyboardingandbusinessclasses,elementarymathandreadingclasses,andofcourseelementarylibraryandtechnologyskills,alongwithcollaboratingwithPreK-12classroomteachersonresearchprojects.IhaveenjoyedbeingamemberofNSLAsince2005.Mymembershiphasconnectedmewithawesomelibrariansandideasfromacrossthestate.IlookforwardtobringingmywiderangeofexperiencestotheNSLABoardofDirectorsandtheopportunitytomakenewconnectionswithlibrariansacrossthestate.Thankyouforyourvote.

NSLAStudentProfile–AbbyZimmerman
Weoftenreceiveflyersinourschoolmailboxesadvertisingvariousprograms,workshops,andproducts.Everyonceinawhile,thesepiecesofpaperturnouttobelife-changing.Suchwasthecaseforhigh-schoolEnglishteacher,andcurrentUNOstudent,AbbyZimmerman,wholastyearfoundaflyeradvertisingUNO’sschoollibraryprograminhermailboxatLincolnEastHighSchool.“AftermeetingwithDr.Pascoovercoffee,IwasconvincedthatIwantedtopursuetheendorsement.”explainedZimmerman.
AfterearningwithherundergraduatedegreeinSecondaryEnglishEducationfromUNLinMayof2015,Zimmermanenteredtheteachingfield,whereshehasespeciallyenjoyedbeingapartofacommunityofeducators,andseeingstudentsgrowintheirunderstanding.“Myfavoritemomentsfromteachinghavecomefromwhenastudentwhoisstrugglingwithaskillfinallymeetsthelearningobjective.”
ZimmermaniscurrentlyinhersecondsemesterofthelibraryprogramattheUniversityofNebraskaatOmaha,havingstartedclassesinfallof2016.Whenaskedaboutherfavoritepartoftheprogramthusfar,Zimmermanexplained,“Ihavelovedreadingcurrentbooks.Ihavealsoenjoyedmyprofessors.Icantellthatallofthemarepassionateabouttheroleofschoollibrarians.”
Zimmermanpointsoutthatalthoughtheworkofbeingastudentaswellasafull-timeteacherisaheftytask,“thispassionmakesbeingateacherandastudentalittlebiteasier.”
AlthoughZimmermanisnotcurrentlyworkingasaschoollibrarian,sheisalreadyusingherlibrarycourseworkinherclassroom,mostrecentlyintheformofareal-worldresearchproject,whereinstudentshavebeengivenabudgettoresearchproductstopurchaseforthemakerspaceinEastHigh’slibrary.“Iresearchedmakerspacesformyclass,pitchedtheideatomylibrarianandshegladlyaccepted.Studentsarepracticingresearchskillsandarehighlyengagedbecausetheygettospendmoney.”
Whenaskedaboutanyadviceshewouldgivetootherlibrarystudents,Zimmermanoffered,“Makeconnectionswithyourprofessorsandclassmatesanddon’tbeafraidtoaskquestions.”
Despitetheworkofbalancingtherolesofteacherandstudent,thedecisiontopursueadegreeinschoollibraryisoneZimmermancontinuestorelish.“Ihavefoundallofthelearningexperiencestobecompletelyworthitintheend.”
