The Science of Burnout and Well-being in Healthcare: How “Other People Matter”

Therapidriseofburnoutinthehealthcarefieldhavemanycallingitan‘epidemic’.What does the science have to say about the causes and consequences of burnout and what can be done to reduce it? Dr. Adair will share the research on burnout in healthcare,where the field is going toaddress this growingproblem, howourcolleagues, friends, and families affect our burnout and evidence-based tools designed to enhance well-being.

Biography: Dr. Carrie Adair is a social psychologist who specializes in well-being for busy and stressed healthcare workers. Her research examines the psychology of burnout and well-being, enhancing relationships, mindfulness meditation and emotion regulation. Dr. Adair received her PhD at UNC Chapel Hill and is currently the Assistant Director of Research at the Duke Center for Healthcare Safety and Quality. Within the Center, Dr. Adair conducts research, provides trainings and develops personal and institutional strategies to enhance well-being. Dr. Adair believes the science of resilience has much to offer those who are feeling burned out and enjoys sharing evidence-based strategies in her trainings.

4 Improving Antibiotic Prescribing for Acute Respiratory Infections Using a Multi-Faceted Approach

Misuse of antibiotics is common in the treatment of outpatient acute respiratory infections, including acute bronchitis. This presentation describes an outpatient antimicrobial stewardship campaign initiated by Nebraska Antimicrobial Stewardship Assessment and Promotion Program and Nebraska Medicine, with the support of Nebraska DHHS HAI/AR program, to improve antibiotic prescribing for ARI in primary care clinics.
