On May 28 East Lincoln Lodge initiated our two newest members: Brothers Will Meyers and Carl Medley. The degrees were conferred by WB Scott Dodge with questions and answers by WB John Butler and WB Art Kolb. WM Monte Dietrick gave the second section lecture, Br. Greg Mason of Cotner Lodge gave the third section lecture and WB Scott Dodge gave the charge. The initiation was well attended with both members and visitors. Thanks to all who participated in making the degree a great one. Then on June 20 the Master Masons Degree was conferred on Brother Eric Whiteman by WB James Michelson.

JUNE BUSINESS MEETING

Potluck and business meeting was held on Thu., June 4. For a June meeting, the attendance was good after a long winter when many members traveled to warmer climates. Bills were paid and committee reports from the Board of Trustees, Finance and Masonic Education were presented. The

Lodge thanked both Scott Dietrick and Scott Dodge for mowing the lawn and flushing the boiler. Also thanked WB Scott Dodge for donating a new American Flag. WM Monte Dietrick gave some Masonic education before the meeting was closed in due form with peace and harmony prevailing.

BLooD DrIVE

At the June meeting, the Worshipful Master was pleased to learn, that of those members who were present and were able to give blood, already did so on a regular basis. He further urged the membership present and all members of 210 who are reading this article to help support the blood drive by giving blood in the month of July. This is the first Nebraska Masonic blood drive sponsored by the Grand Lodge. July is the month to honor the blood shed for our country’s independence; let’s give blood to support those serving in our armed forces today who are in harms way.

Lyndon Johnson took the first degree on Oct. 30, 1937 but never progressed any further.

When asked of Masonry, President William McKinley explained: “After the Battle of Opequam, I went with the surgeon of our Ohio regiment to the field where 5,000 Confederate prisoners were under guard. As soon as we passed the guard, the doctor shook hands with a number of prisoners and began passing out his roll of bills.” On the way back to camp I asked him, “Did you know those men?” “No”. But you gave them a lot of money, do you expect to get it back?” “If they are able to pay me back, they will. It makes no difference to me as they are brother Masons in trouble and I am only doing my duty”. I said to myself, “if that is Masonry, I will take some of it myself.”

The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world to which both women and men may belong. Each chapter selects one or more students to receive a scholarship based on the chapter’s established selection criteria. The total scholarship dollars awarded by Lincoln Eastern Star Chapters to these nine young adults this spring totals over $4500.

Courtney Plucknett is a 2009 graduate of Lincoln East High School. Miss Plucknett plans to attend UNL and major in Pre-Radiation Science Technology.

Starcraft Chapter 307 awarded a scholarship to Max Nimic, a 2009 graduate of Lincoln High School. Mr. Nimic plans to attend the UNL for the 2009-2010 school year.

Temple Chapter 271 awarded two scholarships. The first was awarded to Cooper Domgard, a 2009 graduate of Lincoln Southeast. Mr. Domgard plans to attend Nebraska Wesleyan University. The second scholarship was awarded to Nick Dahlquist, a graduate of Lincoln Southwest High School who plans to attend UNL.

In addition to these post-secondary education scholarships, the local chapters also provide scholarship funds for high school students to participate in the Masonic All Star Marching Band during the Shrine Bowl activities in July. Eastern Star Chapters donate funds to a wide variety of worthy charities, and support the Masonic youth organizations of Rainbow for Girls, Job’s Daughters, and the Order of DeMolay. Other areas of support for the local chapters include a scholarship fund for individuals attending school for the purpose of religious training (i.e., Eastern Star Training Awards for Religious Leadership) and activities that support the Masonic-Eastern Star Children’s Home in Fremont and the Nebraska Masonic Home in Plattsmouth.

JUNE BUSINESS MEETING

The June business meeting was great and the weather was perfect. Although there were no visitors, the Worthy Matron Lorie Dodge was glad to welcome Harold Wulf a long time member back into the chapter room. She also wished all the men a Happy Fathers Day and to the Ladies a happy summer.

The Worthy Matron reported that the Charter Day dinner went extremely well and all scholarship recipients were in attendance.

It was announced that Kensington was to meet on June 23 and the StarLites were to be meeting on June 16. Other announcements were that there was to be an initiation practice on June 9 with an initiation to be held on June 23.

The Worthy Matron stated that our chapter had been working with other chapters preparing for the Area 6 Visitation. She went on to announce that the visitation would be held on Fri., June 26 at the Scottish Rite Temple and invited all in attendance to attend and that reservation forms were available.

The charter was draped with due ceremony to denote the passing of our beloved sister Maxine Spomer who passed away on May 15.

Prior to closing Worthy Matron Lorie Dodge again announced to remember to collect “Best Choice” labels. This is a great fundraiser so don’t forget as they can be turned in at any regular business meeting.

CHArTEr DAy

The Chapter’s “Charter Day” dinner held in May went extremely well and there were compliments to the Chef regarding the meal.

Those who missed the charter day dinner definitely missed a treat. The dinner consisted of salad, chicken cordon bleu, new red potatoes, Masonic green beans and chocolate pudding for dessert. The dinner was a free will offering with the proceeds to go to the Masonic Eastern Star Home for Children in Fremont. The dinner was well attended with a resulting $100 dollars to be donated to the home.

Educational scholarships and band scholarships were presented as well. Columbia’s Masonic All-Star Marching Band scholarship was awarded to Travis Ray. Its two education scholarships were awarded to Kristi Thornburg and Daphne Mumford. Congratulations Travis, Kristi, and Daphne!

The evening finished with some brief entertainment by the Worthy Matron. As this was Columbia’s 90th Charter Day Celebration she presented some facts relating to prices and organizations from 90 years ago. One Masonic organization that was started 90 years ago was the International Order of DeMolay. It was on that theme the Worthy Matron introduced Mark Lighthall and Adam Medley; both active DeMolays belonging to Lincoln’s Dr. Frederick Eiche Chapter who were present to perform the flower talk ceremony.

Lastly, but not least, a big thank-you goes out to all the girls of Bethel No. 63 for serving the dinner. This is an especially big thank-you as we were to understand that they had just served another Masonic dinner just the previous night.

CHArTEr NIGHT DINNEr

Our Lodge celebrated its 141st anniversary on June 16. Just a year after Nebraska statehood in 1867, the Grand Lodge of Nebraska, itself only 11 years old, chartered our Lodge on June 25, 1868.

We celebrated with dinner and the showing of a videotape, “Opening the Doors of Freemasonry,” which is about a young couple’s questions and answers involving our beloved Fraternity. We also started a new tradition during our dinner. This year we lost WB Walker Gruttis and to honor his memory and love of Freemasonry, we created the Walker Gruttis Award for Service to Lincoln

Lodge 19. This year’s recipients embody Walker’s dedication, determination, and helpfulness. Our Junior Warden, Kirk DeCoste, and Senior Deacon, Hugh Perea Estrada, were this year’s honorees. We hope this award will help the memory of WB Walker live on!

MASoNry oN PArADE

Be sure to attend Nebraska’s biggest Masonic parade on Sat., July 25, on Havelock Avenue, starting at 10 a.m. On parade will be the Masonic All-Star Marching Band, with high school musicians from all over Nebraska. Masonic organizations will bring little cars, classic cars,

clowns, and floats. Don’t miss it!

CoTNEr LoDGE HoSTED FAMILy DAy AT PAWNEE LAKE

Cotner Lodge members and their families spent the day at Pawnee Lake State Recreation Area on May 16. Members held a potluck lunch and grilled out for dinner. Numerous fun events were planned including trap shooting, free fishing, yard games, and hiking to name a few. The day started out windy but soon into the festivities the weather calmed down and it turned into a wonderful evening for all in attendance. Thank you the members who donated food and other items to make the day a success and fun for all. Roughly 55 people joined in the festivities. We finished the evening, which was a big hit with both the kids and the “big kids”, with s’mores around an open fire.

orIGIN AND BIrTHPLACE oF MEMorIAL DAy

On May 5, 1868, the Grand Army of the Republic established Memorial Day or Decoration Day as the national day to decorate the graves of the Civil War soldiers with flowers. Major General John A. Logan appointed May 30 as the day to be observed. Arlington National Cemetery had the first observance of the day on a grand scale. The place was appropriate as it already housed graves of over 20,000 Union dead and several hundred Confederate dead. Gen. and Mrs. Ulysses S. Grant presided the meeting and the center point of these Memorial Day ceremonies was the mourning-draped veranda of the Arlington mansion. Speeches were followed by a march of soldiers’ children and orphans and members of the GAR through the cemetery strewing flowers on both Union and Confederate graves. They also recited prayers and sang hymns for the dead.

Even before this declaration, local observances for these war dead were being held at various places. In Columbus, Miss., a group of women visited a cemetery on April 25 1866, to decorate the graves of Confederate soldiers and the Union soldiers whop fell at the battle of Siloh. Many cities in the North and the South claim to be the first to celebrate Memorial Day in 1866 but Congress and President Lyndon Johnson officially declared Waterloo in New York as the ‘birthplace’ of Memorial Day in 1966. It was said that on May 5, 1866, a ceremony was held here to honor local soldiers and sailors who fought in the Civil War, businesses were closed for the day and residents furled flags at half-mast. It was said to be the first formal, community-wide and regular event.

In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by the Congress, who designated the last Monday in May as the day for its observance. Many states observe separate Confederate Memorial Days. Mississippi observes it on the last Monday of April, Alabama on the fourth Monday of April, Georgia on April 26, North and South Carolina on May 10 and Louisiana and Tennessee on June 3. In Tennessee, the day is named as ‘Confederate Decorations Day’ while Texas observes ‘Confederate Heroes Day’ on January 19. In Virginia, Memorial Day is better known as ‘May Confederate Memorial Day.’ - www.thememorialdaytribute.com

I w a n t e d t o t h a n k everyone who has served and/or who is currently serving our country. You are always in our thoughts and prayers.

You can also come out to our business meeting on the first Thursday of the month. The brethren would enjoy seeing you.

DEGrEE WorK

Liberty Lodge has been somewhat busy so far this summer. We have continued with degree work on Bro. Abdul Kareem, our new brother from Iraq. We hope to finish his Master Mason work on July 9. Bro. Abdul has been quite in awe by the whole experience, and is very interested in what we as Masons do and stand for. While not entirely unaware of Masonry, the experience for him has been interesting. I hope to be able to sit down with him and have him relate how Masonry is viewed in Iraq. He has told us some stories, and I think this would be a great learning experience for all Masons.

AWArDS NIGHT

On May 28, we had our annual Awards Night. We were honored by the presence of the Grand Master, Most Worshipful Brother Russ Reno. He gave an interesting talk on some Masonic history in

Nebraska. Pins and awards were presented to the following Brothers: Richard A. “Doc” Burklund and Right Worshipful Brother Bruce A. Watkins received 25 years pins, W.B. Bob R. Foreman, 40 year pin, Brother John W. Brown, 50 year pin, and Brothers John H. Binning and Ivan B. Hevelone, 60 year pins. Each Brother who received a pin and in attendance gave a short speech, and each expressed the same idea, that Masonry was the best and how Masons are the best, and we all can agree on that.

The dinner i tself was fantastic, prepared by Phyllis Foreman and served by the Job’s Daughter’s Bethel’s No. 5 & 60.

As we continue to do degree work, I would like to ask that any Brother who has not been to Lodge for sometime, please make an effort to do so. Even if it is coming to Lodge just once a month, it is impressive for new candidates to see his Brothers sharing his entry into Masonry. Please try to attend more often if possible.

HoWDy, NEIGHBorS

Officers from College View 320 were invited to attend the June meeting of the College View Neighborhood Association. The organization was formed by local businesses several years ago when the city announced plans to close 48th Street for repairs. That project, with the association’s suggestions, now includes some renovations and beautification in addition to the scheduled repaving. Work is expected to begin later this summer.

Access to the neighborhood via this major arterial also impacts our Lodge at 47th and Cooper, so we plan to become involved and provide input where appropriate.

In a larger sense, we must not only be good stewards of our facility, but good partners in all endeavors to make our community stronger. Our Craft is not just about physical bricks and mortar; instead, it is the bond of fellowship, hope and charity

that holds together our fraternity.Members of the Masonic

organizations meeting at our Lodge often note that local merchan t s and even fo lk s l i v i n g l i t e r a l l y n e x t d o o r remark, “We’ve heard of the Masons, but we don’t know what you’re about or what goes on in your building.”

We s ince re ly hope to change this by working with l o c a l g r o u p s , b e g i n n i n g w i t h t h e N e i g h b o r h o o d Association. Working together, we can accompl i sh much!

A little boy was waiting for his mother to come out of the grocery store. As he waited, he was approached by a man who asked, “Son, can you tell me

where the post office is?” The little boy replied, “Sure! “Just go straight down this street a couple of blocks and turn to your right.” The man thanked the boy and said, “I’m the new pastor in town. I’d like for you to come to church on Sunday. I’ll show you how to get to heaven.” The little boy replied with a chuckle, “Yea right! Give me a break! You don’t even know how to get to the post office.”

THE BISHoPS VISIT

The bishop visited a church in his diocese. Only three people showed up to hear him preach. He asked the pastor, “Did you give notice of my visit?” “No,” replied the pastor. The he dryly added, “but word seems to have gotten around anyway.”

SCoTT, GEorGE, AND EVErS EXPErIENCE THE FELLoW CrAFT DEGrEE

Brothers Robert Scott and Joseph George were passed to the degree of a Fellow Craft Mason on Fri., June 12 in two separate degree ceremonies. WB Patrick Barger conferred Brother Scott’s degree and WB Jim Banister officiated for Mr. George. WB Jim Banister presided in the East once again for Brother Spencer Evans’ Fellow Craft degree on June 19. It was great to see Brother Robert Scott, passed the week before, attend Spencer’s degree. Afterward, he and Spencer joined twenty other Lancaster Lodge Brothers for a round table exercise in the Entered Apprentice Degree. The enthusiasm of our candidates for Masonry is quite invigorating!

BroTHEr roN SMITH oF LIBErTy No. 300

CATErS MEAL

Ron Smith of Liberty Lodge No. 300 was asked to cater a meal following the June 12 Fellow Craft degree. Numerous brethren enjoyed Ron’s homemade fried chicken strips and french fries. It is always a pleasure to have brethren from

other lodges visit, especially when they feed us as well as Ron did! Come back any time, Ron. Don’t forget your deep fryer, though…

ENTErED APPrENTICE DEGrEE JULy 10TH

Mr. Drew Bruhl will be initiated as an Entered Apprentice Mason on Friday, July 10th and 7:00 p.m. Dinner will be served afterward. See you there.

LANCASTEr No. 54 AND TABULA rASA No. 332 JoIN ForCES For oVErHEAD ProJECTor

In a wonderful gesture of brotherhood, Lancaster Lodge voted to join with Tabula Rasa Lodge to purchase a much needed Powerpoint overhead projector for use with lecture slides. Each lodge agreed to pay half the costs of this item. This replaces an old, worn-out slide projector currently in use (when it wanted to work). WB Patrick Barger arranged for Lancaster Lodge’s ritual slides to be converted to a Powerpoint presentation which allows for greater viewing ability and eliminates the need to replace individual slides as they deteriorate with time.

ProSPECT NIGHT PLANNED For

SEPTEMBEr

WM Merv McDonough has announced his plans for a Prospect Night in September. This program will feature guest speakers discussing Lancaster Lodge and Nebraska Masonry. A catered meal will be served at 7:00 p.m. complete with bartender (free for prospects and their lady). Be sure to invite your wives and ladies, as our potential new members will be encouraged to invite theirs as well. Musical entertainment is also planned. An exact date in September has yet to be determined and will be announced shortly with further details of this fabulous event.

This is a great opportunity to invite your friends, co-workers, relatives, congregation members, doctor, dentist, lawyer, insurance agent, neighbors, teacher, etc. to a no-pressure event at which they can further explore the brotherhood of Masonry and Lancaster Lodge. Start floating the idea of joining our lodge now, if you haven’t already begun. Recruiting incentives are being identified for all of those who bring in a new member. Details will be announced at a later date. Good luck!
