History:
In 1971 the Nebraska Legislature established the Agricultural Products Industrial
Utilization Committee (APIUC) to investigate alternative markets for crops produced by
Nebraska farmers. The APIUC focused on the use of ethanol, an alcohol derived from
grain, as a gasoline additive. This mixture of alcohol and gasoline became popularly
known as "gasohol."
Interest in gasohol grew during the fuel shortages of the 1970s. Even after the end of the
energy crisis, the interest in ethanol remained strong. Many Nebraskans who remained
interested in alternative fuel sources helped develop an ethanol industry in the state. This
new industry offered farmers another use for their grain crops and the potential to boost
crop prices.
The APIUC underwent restructuring over the years and eventually became known as the
Nebraska Ethanol Board. The Board continues to promote the use of ethanol and the
ethanol industry in Nebraska. They are active at the state and national levels in
promoting pro-ethanol legislation. The Nebraska Ethanol Board also provides grant
funding for ethanol manufacturing and processing start-ups and for research related to
ethanol and alternative fuels. Nebraska is currently the third largest ethanol producing
state, with seven ethanol plants producing approximately 350 million gallons per year.*
As a state agency, the Nebraska Ethanol Board provides ethanol-related informational
materials at no charge.
*These statistics were provided by the Nebraska Ethanol Board and were current as of
December, 2000.
Scope and Content:
