Not that we’re ones to make a fuss about such things, but it’s actually our first birthday. That’s right, we might not look a day over two weeks, but this edition of NE1 that you hold in your hands marks one full orbit of the sun (remember that!?) since we came into being. We’re not celebrating too hard though, as magazines and candles tend not to mix too well. Now, you might be stood there feeling a little on the awkward side for having turned up without getting us a present, but allow us to put that mind of yours at ease – you don’t need one. Why not, you ask? Because that’s our job. That’s right, you hold in your hands a gift of Newcastle arts, culture, events and voices, and it’s yours to unwrap and do with as you see fit. If you want to raise a glass to us though, you’re more than welcome. Cheers!

CORPORATE SESSIONS @ BLACKFRIARSWe were hoping for some more medieval treatment from Blackfriars on this one, things like ‘get along with your workmates or we’ll tar and feather you and put you in the stocks,’ but it turns out it’s team building through making and tasting food and wine. That’s right everyone, from Saturday 11th until Saturday 18th May, Newcastle enters its annual period of frenzied fashionable fun as the entire city turns itself into a gigantic concrete catwalk.Following on from the success of last year, 2013 promises to be NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week’s biggest and best outing yet with an amazing array of special events planned. There’s going to be special parties, a host of celebrity guests, as well as all manner of retailers inviting you in for exclusive promotions. Coordinating everything is Sandra Tang, who believes it’s not only now “integral to Newcastle”, but that it “helps to showcase what the city has to offer, and strengthens our role as

the fashion capital of the North.”“Shopping wise, we have the best of the high street. With the recently opened second largest Primark, right through to top independent gems like our vintage jewel Attica, which was voted as one of the Top 100 stores in

Vogue recently. Everything is within walking distance in the city centre as well, whether it’s charity shop chic or designer you’re after, and we have some of the best fashion courses in the country and amazing fashion talent coming from the region. We’re delighted that there’s already a lot of excitement building up from the public and it’s looking like it’s going to be bigger and better than ever.”As with all great events though, things kicked off well in advance with the crowning of a special t-shirt just for Fashion Week. Arguably the

only t-shirt you should be seen in during this year’s event, Electrik Sheep have designed a very special, and very limited edition, tee to help raise money for Metro Radio’s Cash For Kids. It’s on sale now, exclusively at Fenwick and the charity’s own stall

at Newcastle Fashion Weekend, and costs £10. NE1’s street team have been out and about trying to discover the best dressed amongst

you and, if you haven’t already visited

their Facebook page to vote for the best, you ought

to. Plus, Fashion Week teamed up with Tyne & Wear Archives and Museums, as well as the City Library, to encourage you to submit an entry for their Generations Of Style competition, where a fashionable photo from yesteryear could bag you a Mercedes SLK-Class convertible on loan for a weekend and a £250

Champagne Shopping Spree at Cruise. Although probably not at the same time. It’s with Mercedes and Cruise that things begins in earnest as well, when the Friday night before Fashion Week sees the former’s car showroom

transformed into a catwalk for the latter to put on a very special, and invite only, live show. Saturday though is where things really begin to pick up speed, with Newcastle’s first ever Fashion Weekend starting the festivities at Northumbria Students Union from 11am. Billed as Newcastle’s very own answer to the Clothes Show Live, the demonstrations, talks, designer clothes, champagne stands, model scouts, and cupcake stalls on offer essentially make it an early Christmas present for fashionistas. The focus turns to Fat Buddha after the weekend though, when the city’s first ever sample sale from designer boutique Van Mildert combines with an incredible lunchtime of pampering, manicuring Metro Radio DJs for Martini Manicure Monday. Organisers are expecting queues to be around the block for this, with discounts of up to 50% off designer brands like By Malene Birger, Marc By Marc Jacobs, Sam Edelman, Vero Moda, French Connection, and more. The next three days see the spotlight return to talent a little closer to home, starting with the Northumbria University Graduate Fashion Show at BALTIC on the Tuesday, before Donna Air (yes, the actual Donna Air) presents the Fashion Front Row showcase at As You Like It on Wednesday. Thursday then sees

Eldon Square taken over by catwalks, as the stores themselves

première their new spring collections in an entire day of free demonstrations. Friday sees Newcastle hosting its very own version of the Royal Wedding, with a bridal show at the Theatre Royal. Regarded as the city’s ultimate luxury wedding venue, the theatre will be used to display fashions for bridesmaids, grooms and guests with places free to 100 of NE1’s

would-be brides. The official closing party takes place at Planet Watch on Grainger Street throughout Saturday 18th and has in the past seen such illustrious celebs as Will.I.Am and Dizzee Rascal gracing the event with their presence. This year enjoy guest appearances from magician Chris Cross and a DJ set from Lauren Pope, and you never know who else might drop by!There’s also a packed programme of Fringe events taking place throughout the city. Everywhere

from Urban Outfitters, Barluga, Northern

Stage, The Grosvenor Casino, Lush and Ann Summers are planning their own special events. It’s not

often that the entire city can

come together for a celebration of this

nature, so you’d be a fool (an unfashionable one at that) to not let NE1’s Newcastle Fashion Week bring a little style into your life.

When it comes to style, the people of Newcastle are self confessed perfectionists. Renowned for their risk taking and eye for colour, it is no surprise that the women’s shoe brand Rocket Dog is a Newcastle girl’s first choice. The Rocket Dog team doesn’t just design shoes; they build creations that take inspiration from around the globe. The collection encapsulates the laid back nature of the Californian lifestyle, where the brand originated 16 years ago, with styles including casual pumps, exciting heels, eye-catching wedges and fabulous flip-flops. Colourful prints and exciting fabrics combined with the famous Rocket Dog special touches, such as their funky oversized bows and vibrant buckles, the women of Newcastle can trust Rocket Dog to make a fashion statement.Newcastle always follows the latest trends and it can rely on Rocket Dog to keep the city fashion forward and in style. “The energetic and fabulous women of Newcastle know how to have fun and Rocket Dog’s ever-exciting range of irresistibly funky shoes and boots allow them to live it up in style,” says Craig Edwards of Newcastle’s Scorpio shoes.

COMEDY

One of the most successful and quirkiest comedians in the UK Eddie Izzard is visiting four corners of the globe on his Force Majeure tour, taking in a staggering 25 different countries, he

graces the Metro Radio Arena with his presence on Saturday 4th May.

Eddie’s hoping that the sheer ambition of his tour will

propel other stand-ups into considering something similar. “I hope it might help stand-up take off in some of these different countries. All you need is a microphone, people might watch it and say ‘hey that looks fun, I’m

going to try that!’”With Force Majeure, Eddie

has made it his mission to produce an act that will strike a chord with people from any and every nationality. He feels quite evangelical about it. The comic says that, “It’s a beautiful thing. I’m an inclusionist. It’s good to reach out to people from different backgrounds. Once you do that, everything will change forever. When that starts, you can’t go back. We came from just 10,000 homo-sapiens, and now we are seven billion. But we’re all the same.”

Eddie’s confident that no matter where you live – from

Kathmandu to Kenya – you’ll enjoy his show. “No part of the show is specific to any particular country. I play to progressive audiences across the world who are open to comedy. I’m talking about ideas that Austrians and Australians can get. It’s designed for everyone.”Eddie Izzard performs at Metro Radio Arena on Saturday 4th May.

Here’s something we’ve just learnt – Seven Stories has the largest Enid Blyton collection in the UK – original illustrations and manuscripts that are safe for future generations.Which is why it makes sense for Seven Stories to give you a chance to immerse yourself in the stories and worlds created by Enid Blyton, so you’ll be adventuring with the Famous Five, discovering Toyland with Noddy, escaping to The Magic Faraway Tree and then heading off to Green Hedges for tea.For anyone not familiar with Enid I bet that sentence messed with your head a bit. You’ll even get to view those rarely seen original treasures from the collection and take part in the ‘white glove experience’ while combing the special Seven Stories archive, and meet the experts who bring this unique collection to life and see how they keep these works preserved forever.Starting on Thursday 9th May, there’s three other dates where you’ll have a chance of exploring the Enid way – namely Sunday 19th May, Thursday 6th and Sunday 23rd June. The exhibition runs at Seven Stories from Saturday 4th May until April 2014.

QUICK QUESTIONQUICK QUESTION

After 14 years of working in comedy I found myself last Sunday doing a comedy first. Martin Mor had asked me to take part in his kids show at The Stand comedy club. I’ve performed in front of stag parties, baying mobs and 2,000 Hells Angels and none of that was filling me with as much fear as doing this show.So I started putting together some ideas when it struck me that what I absolutely needed to make this work was something I could hold in my hand that would make fart noises. An hour later I found myself in a magic shop finding it difficult to look the owner in the eye as I asked if such a device existed. He replied, “I think sir, what you are after is the remote control fart machine.” I was delighted at this and said, “Sir, had I known that such a thing as the remote control fart machine existed I would have been here years ago.”The remote control fart machine is exactly what it says on the tin. A small speaker that makes very realistic fart noises via a remote control. As I was experimenting with it at home I then decided what I needed to complete the act was a magic wand. That way I could create the illusion of pointing the wand at the kids and casting fart spells. My very understanding wife just sighed and when I returned from my show that night a wand was waiting for me.The show was as terrifying as I thought it would be and we were all having to deal with a very boisterous birthday party who had been left in the audience as mums and dads hit the shops. The fart machine went well, but the highlight for me was when I asked a small boy if mum and dad got drunk on holiday. He said, “Yeah they do…and we all end up in A and E.”That’s what’s great about kids. Their brutal honesty! John Scott performs at The Stand in Newcastle on Wednesday 15th Maywww.thestand.co.uk

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT

Here at NE1, we’ve seen a few businesses celebrate their first birthday of late. The Stand threw a big party, Pasqualinos unveiled a daunting new oven, and now 9Bar on Grey Street has gone and doubled its seating capacity. One of the few authentic Italian coffee shops in town, 9Bar is owned by Italio-Geordies Aldo, Cristina and Joseph De Giorgi, and quickly became one of the city’s best loved hotspots of coffee culture with its arty interior and impressive Italian tapas menu. As well as boasting the “best cheese toastie” around. Cosy and intimate on the inside and nestled snugly next to the Theatre Royal Joseph, who designed the interior himself, has said he “wanted to create something really different” with influences from the family’s home town in Southern Italy. “Our vision has become a reality and we’ve now created an extra 20 seats so that more customers can enjoy the experience.”Already with seating outside for 100 people, there’s even complimentary wi-fi for all customers so you can tell your friends about it while you’re enjoying your risotto balls in breadcrumbs, meatball sliders, or some of the best roasted coffee beans in Newcastle.

For his solo exhibition at BALTIC 39, his first in a public gallery in the UK, Calderwood will create a series of ambitious new sculptures which explore decaying and collapsing systems and the impact of environment and process on simple everyday materials. What Money Can’t Buy: The Moral Limits Of Markets. Michael J Sandel, Harvard University. Building on the success of his legendary ‘Justice’ course at Harvard, Michael Sandel’s influence as the world’s ‘most relevant living philosopher’ is rapidly expanding worldwide. On stage and in writing, he deploys a unique and charismatic gift for empowering public participation in acute social and moral questions, such as: Should we financially reward children for good marks? Is it ethical to pay people to donate organs? Should a banker be paid more than a nurse? Should Universities give preference to poor applicants? What about hiring mercenaries to fight our wars, outsourcing inmates to for-profit prisons or selling citizenship? With the hardback publication in 2012 of What Money Can’t Buy, Sandel argued that market values have come to define our lives in ways that aren’t good for democracy or the quality of public or private life, and are in danger of corrupting the value we place on things such as children, the environment, and citizenship. From London to South Korea, hundreds, often thousands, flock to hear him speak and politicians are listening. In a period of rapid global cultural and economic change, now more than ever we require the highest quality

And so, as all good parties must, the first birthday of NE1 magazine draws to a close (quite literally, as this is the last page), but we hope you’ve enjoyed our inaugural year as much as we have. Are we dwelling on our age though? Goodness no! We’re already plotting both our next 12 months of pristine printed providence and global domination of the alliteration scene. Do be sure to return to us next time though where, like all good one year olds, we’ll be getting our milk teeth into such wonders as the Late Shows, where the city’s venues will be open after hours for one-of-a-kind cultural adventures. Not only that, but the Evolution Festival also comes to town. Now, put that party horn down and get amongst it.
