IEEE Apollo Lunar Module Milestone Ceremonycontinued from Page One

The design, construction, and testing of the LM continually pushed the technology envelope and resulted in one of the most important and successful engineering achievements of mankind. The award ceremony took place in Plant 25. It opened with remarks and introduction of guests by Dr. Ron Pirich, IEEE History Chair and Technical Fellow at Northrop Grumman. Remarks by Dr. Charles Rubenstein (IEEE Director and Chair, Region 1 Board of Governors) and by Nick Golas (IEEE Section Chair) were followed by the unveiling of the Bronze Plaque awarded to Northrop Grumman. The plaque was accepted by Patricia McMahon, Northrop Grumman Sector Vice President and Division General Manager.

Ms. McMahon thanked the IEEE for this honor. She went on to recognize current Northrop Grumman employees who worked on the Apollo program and Grumman retirees who were in attendance by presenting them with a Certificate of Appreciation for their contributions to one of America’s greatest achievements.

The members of the Retiree Club who received the Certificates on behalf of all Grumman employees who were involved with the Lunar Module were: Retiree Club President Marion Abbott; Club Director Emeritus Betty Bohlander; Club Director and Curator of the Northrop Grumman History Center Larry Feliu; Club Director Bob Foster; Club Secretary Lou Kubat; Club Sergeant-at-Arms Barbara Major; Club Director Carol Nelson; Club Treasurer Frank Rizzo; and Club members Charles Dietz, Dominick Cermigini, Dick Dunne, Duffy Gallegro, Don Kerbs, Henry Prew, Robert Savasta, Ken Speiser, and Bob Tallman.

The IEEE also presented a plaque to the Grumman Retiree Club. This plaque was accepted by Marion Abbott on behalf all the retiree members.

CALIFORNIA / San Diego

On August 25, twenty-three retirees and guests enjoyed a fine buffet lunch at the 94th Aero Squadron restaurant, adjacent to the Montgomery Field Airport in San Diego. This interesting restaurant is decorated with wartime artifacts, lots of aircraft memorabilia, and even old airplane wings hanging over the dining area.

Several retired Field Service Reps took time off from their post-retirement jobs to join us. They included Clyde Cain (Northrop Grumman Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Program),

Gayle Quebedeaux (Cubic Corporation Aerial Systems), and Lou Wilson (General Atomics UAV Predator technical documentation). It’s great to have these guys providing exceptional assistance and support for our Country’s warriors.

Our “get well soon” thoughts and prayers go out to Joe Holmes (past president of our Chapter) and Cindy Metz.

President Cliff Robinson also reported that Gordon Cargill is currently in rehab after hip replacement surgery.

The lucky 50/50 winners were Clyde Cain and Eleanor Kirvin.

Many birthdays in May, June, July and August, including Clyde Cain, Sally Cain, Sue Callahan, Marge Cargill, Ken Crane, Kay Hanlon, Vincent Holder, Dwaine Howell, Roxanne Howell, Eleanor Kirvin, Howard Lindquist, Cindy Metz, Barbara Mosley, Bob Overdorff, Charlie Quiter, Pat Quiter, Frank Riley, Ken Riley, Al Schaefer, Eleanor Stenzel, Jim Vollaro, Marie Vollaro, Charles Walters, Elizabeth Walters, Billy Watson, and Maryam Wilson.

In August, Al Schaeffer celebrated his milestone 80th year of being on this planet with a very special birthday party hosted by his family. Al’s children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and numerous friends joined in the festivities.

Anniversary good wishes to: Clyde & Sally Cain, Ken & Pauline Crane, Gert & Sy Glick, Dwaine & Roxanne Howell, Bill & Vonnie Jolly, Clarence & Sam Lohse, Mike & Sherry Lossick, Dave & Cindy Metz, Charlie & Pat Quiter, Bill & Nancy Roeckl, Dick & Ann Sarraffe, Bob & Helen Steinhauser, Charlie & Eleanor Stenzel, Ed & Jean Vasely, and Lou & Maryam Wilson.

New England North

July Report

Our July meeting/luncheon was held on the 14th at the Sirloin Saloon in Rutland, Vermont. We had 12 members and guests, and waited, with no results, for six more who got “lost in space” or caught up in the unfamiliar urban traffic in Rutland!

President Egner led the Pledge of Allegiance. Joan Wanner delivered the invocation, which included a prayer for the Williams family as they gathered in New London for a memorial service for Don Williams.

After lunch we had no business to discuss other than the location of our next luncheon, which will be on August 17, at 11:30 a.m. The place we chose was not available, so, please note, once again we will meet at the Sirloin Saloon, which provided us with a private room along with a delicious lunch.

Sixteen people have made reservations for our annual Ogunquit, Me, jaunt on September 13/14.

August Report

Our August 17th meeting was again held at the Sirloin Saloon, in Rutland, VT. Seventeen members and guests attended. Originally eleven were expected, and the list grew to twenty the day before the luncheon. Final count (17) was a result of one cancellation and one couple going to the Sirloin Saloon in Manchester, VT!! We have not included notes from Manchester, since none were provided to us! (This couple will remain anonymous).

Pres. Bill Egner opened the official Rutland meeting, leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Joan Wanner delivered the invocation.

Phil Hodge confirmed our financial solvency, and pointed out that the Nostalgia article in the last issue of the Retiree Club Newsletter was submitted by our own Bud Clark (Badge #2318).

The discussion then turned to our September 13/14 get-together in Maine. Currently, 12 or 13 plan to attend, which should make for a great time. Plans for October-fest are in process.

August Congrats to Judy Egner and Flo Riegert (birthdays), and to Barbara & Art Reill (anniversary)!

On August 27, a beautiful day, a few of our members enjoyed seeing Phil competing with his Morgan Horse, Stormy, at the Green Mountain Horse, in South Woodstock, Vermont.

As this is written (Monday, Aug 29) Northern New England, particularly Vermont, is recovering from the ravages of Hurricane Irene. This tropical storm seems to have dropped the Atlantic Ocean on us.

Next Get-Together: Sept 13/14.

NEW JERSEY / Garden State

July Report

Our July l9, 2011, meeting was held at the Lakehurst Diner and was called to order by President Larsen at 1PM, with fourteen members present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and was followed by a moment of silence for our sick and departed members and for our service men and women.

The Minutes of the previous meeting and the Treasurer’s Report were accepted as read.

The only July birthday is Peggy Knipper on the 17th.

Al and Gloria Larsen will celebrate their 66th anniversary on the 21st.

Sunshine Report – None

Old Business – President Larsen thanked Walter Matura for bringing in his hooked rug wall hanging. Walter told us how he got started doing hooked rugs and explained how he laid out the project to be worked on.

Al Larsen explained an event that took place during the installation of an aircraft parts delivery system. The system was designed to deliver aircraft parts from storage to a workstation, where the parts were gathered to be delivered to a work area. In reverse,

7

There are no anniversaries to report.

Sunshine Report - Chairlady Gloria Larsen: Walter Matuza was in the Hospital; Gloria sent cards to Don Smith and Harry Adams.

There was no old business.

New Business – President Larsen talked about a new Navy contract to Northrop-Grumman for production of the E-2D surveillance aircraft, which is an upgrade of the E-2C. Ron Kerr said the E-2 aircraft family has been very successful; to illustrate this record, he said he worked on the first E-2C thirty-eight years ago.

President Larsen talked about the booklet containing almost all of the Northrop Grumman Retirement Plans sent to most of us. The Plan that we are under was not included in the booklet. It was generally felt that it did not apply to us.

John Zator spoke about a dirigible, which is being worked on by Northrop Grumman employees at Lakehurst Naval Air Station. He said that Lakehurst is one of only two places in the U.S. that has a hangar large enough to hold this blimp.

Ways and Means – Each attendee received a gift.

The meeting adjourned at 3:05PM.

Next Meeting: Sept 20, at 1PM, at the Lakehurst Diner.

NEW YORK / Eastern Long Island Chapter

Next Meeting: Sept 21, the Holiday Inn Express, Rte 58, Riverhead. [East of the Tanger Mall & Riverhead Raceway.] Lunch at Noon ($14); meeting at 1PM. Contact Bob Albert (631-585-7987) by Monday of meeting week for reservations/cancellations (needed for accurate lunch head count). If paid in advance, no need to call. Future meetings: Wed. Oct 19th and Nov.16th

the trays of aircraft parts were to be picked up at the workstations and delivered back to the parts storage system.

This complicated delivery system utilized automated Guided Vehicles whose routes to and from the various work stations and storage systems were directed by electronic signals from wires imbedded in the floor. This is where the development of software to control the hardware becomes critical.

Although Grumman Data Systems controlled the software for the Automated Storage System and the workstations, the contractor for the Automated Guided Vehicle System controlled its software. During one of the acceptance demonstrations, the roller conveyors of three guided vehicles, as well as several workstations, were activated at various times when they should not have been activated. The result was a scene comparable to the Keystone Cops comedies. You could cry or laugh. Trays were being ejected off the guided vehicles and from workstations on the floor instead of being passed on to each other. The two software developers, of course, blamed each other.

New Business – President Larsen mentioned mail addressed to the club regarding tours and outings. He put the idea out for future discussion.

Ways and Means – Everyone present received a gift.

August Report

Our August l6, 2011 meeting was held at the Lakehurst Diner and was called to order by President Larsen, at 1PM, with seventeen members present. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and was followed by a moment of silence for our sick and departed members and for our service men and women.

The Minutes of the previous meeting and the Treasurer’s Report were accepted as read.

PENNSYLVANIA Northeastern Pennsylvania

July Report

Our July meeting was opened at 1222 hours by President Chuck Dowd. We welcomed Dan Knowles back from sunny Florida. Dan will be here for a while. His wife Barbara could not attend, as she was at therapy. Treasurer Fred Rademacher reported we are doing well financially. Secretary Ed Sparkowski reported that he talked to the History Center, and found out that the Mural that used to be in the Plant 2 lobby as you walked into the building is now on display in the Center. For those who don’t know, the History Center is a separate building next to Plant 25, by the old Hazel Street Gate. President Dowd tapped the Herlings to investigate a new place to meet. They will check out Kay’s Restaurant in Lake Ariel. President Dowd gave a Dan Fass report: Dan is in Rehab and doing well, but every once in awhile he will loose his train of thought. There is a good possibility that he and his wife will be staying with their son in York, PA. But Dan sent regards to all and wished he could make meetings. With all the official business out of the way, we settled into old war stories about our days at the Big G, and what we will be doing the rest of the summer.

The 50X50 was won by Danny Knowles. See what happens when you attend meetings. We tried to make the meeting last as long as possible, because we did not want to go back outside into the 95 degree heat. Meeting was adjourned at 1345 hours. As of now, we will be back at Ehrhardt’s next month, on the 16th of August. Again, if any member has a place we might be interested in meeting at, let the President know. Oh! By the way: The Ark is finished in my back yard, so I am all set for the next deluge of rain. Only problem I am having is getting animals to come and look at it, especially those pesky Unicorns. Happy traveling. See Ya. By: Edward J. Sparkowski, Secretary/Chaplain (570-698-7182) [email protected]

August Report

Our August meeting was opened at 1205 hours with a salute to the flag, led by Sergeant-at-Arms Charlie Teufert. We welcomed members Stanley & Margaret Wroblewski, and Willie & Mello Wolter. The business of the meeting was handled quickly. We are solvent and Sparky reported that someone else will have to take the minutes next month, as he will be in Kingsbay, Georgia, witnessing his son get pinned as a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy. Dan Knowles informed us that George Skurla died on Sept 2nd, 2001 and was laid to rest on 9/11. Dan was making a comparison with the 9/11 ceremonies and also George’s passing. He wanted to show that while we were watching the buildings burn and fall, on Long Island another one of our busness greats was being laid to rest.

While the 50X50 tickets were being sold, we continued with our chit-chat. Then, the 50X50 was won by Frank Damis.

Dan Knowles mentioned that many of our widows do not know much about what they are entitled to upon the passing of their Grummanite partner. Therefore, at the next meeting he will give a presentation on our benefits and how the surviving spouse can take advantage of them. It would behoove those who have not made a meeting in a while to make an effort to make this one. It should be very interesting. FYI: As I said earlier, my wife and I will be at the Kingsbay Naval Base, at the pinning of my son, John, as Chief Petty Officer. John is career Navy, and has been in at this writing for 17 years, 1 month, and 3 weeks. His specialty was on submarines as a Radioman, and then as a Radioman/Electronic Technician. For the last year and a half he has been in the Trident Training Center as an instructor. So what he did on the boat he now teaches. Also, to all NEPA Members: This is an election year. We are looking for members to step up and run for Office. The present slate have served their two years. Next Meeting: Sept 15, at Noon, at Ehrhardt’s Lakeside, again. [I know this date is right, since my son’s pinning is the next day.] So gang, stay safe, have a good and safe Labor Day Holiday, and see you at Ehrhardt’s. The meeting was adjourned at 1315 hours. To the attendees, it was like a reunion with the Moon Landing personnel. Lots of chatter, lots of reminiscence ——a great reunion —— Attending were Angelo LaCognata, Bob Taylor, Sandy Howell, Jim Travlos, and Ken Maloney. More news after the next NASA/Grumman breakfast. With the excitement of being at this meeting, the personal taking of notes were at a minimum.
