The Guild

If you have been bereaved, you might find it helpful to join with a group of people who have all lost someone close to them. The group meets once a month for a coffee and a chat, and we lend each other emotional and practi-cal support. The meeting time is 2pm on the 3rd Wed of each month and we meet in room 2 of the Hall.

Bereavement Support Group

At its heart, Messy Church, aims to create the opportunity for parents, carers and children to express their creativity through craft work, sit down together for a meal, listen to a bible story, sing together and have fun. Messy Church draws people of all ages together and helps us to experience what it means to be part of a Christian community outside of Sunday worship. We meet on Saturdays from 4- 5.30 pm. Here are some dates when you can join us in our hall at 1 Guthrie Terrace: 26 September 31 October 28 November 24 December (for our Christingle Workshop)

“The Guild is a movement within the Church of Scotland which en-courages and enables women and men to express their faith in wor-ship, prayer and action.”

A varied programme of events has been arranged for both the Evening and Afternoon Guilds for the 2015/16 session. The Evening Guild meets fortnightly on Tuesday eve-nings at 7.30pm in the Church Hall and the Afternoon Guild is held monthly at 2.30pm also in the Church Hall. The first Evening Guild is on 15th September and the Afternoon Guild on 29th September. Lifts can usually be arranged for those who have difficulty in attend-ing. For further details on any Guild mat-ters, please contact Norma McDonald, President, Phone: 01382 793834

Scottish Country Dance classes

start on Monday 14 September 2015 Meetings every Monday 7.30 to 9.30pm. New members welcome. All dances are walked through first—so no experience is needed, and for people on their own there will always be a partner. Linda Wightman

The Book Club resumes on

Thursday 10 September at 2pm in Room 1.

The Choir has been having a break from regular rehearsals during the summer months but rehearsals will resume on Thursday 3 September 7pm – 8.30pm in the Session Room. We are blessed at St Margaret’s with many dedicated and faithful Choir members, some of whom have given service over a number of years. There are, however, always vacan-cies especially for gentlemen, and Bill Ford and I are pleased to invite anyone who might be interested in joining us to come along to any of our rehearsals on Thursday evening to find out what is involved. Also on the musical front, there has been a great deal of remedial work carried out on the organ over the past few months Stewart Fyffe

The CAFÉ is open 12.30pm—3.30pm every Wednesday during school term time, serving soup, sandwiches and home bakes.

We are always looking for new waiting staff and bakers should you wish to become involved.

WEDDINGS

Monday Badminton re - started

on 31 August and

Thursday Badminton starts on

10 September 2015.

On a Tuesday morning a group of people meet at 9.30 am for a time of prayer in the church. We give thanks to God for the blessings he has given. We pray for the world, our city, our congregation. Some people ask us to remember them and to pray for their specific situation or crisis. Here is a letter I recently received from one of our congregation who says:

“At the end of 2014 we thought our world had come to an end. My husband was diag-nosed with Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Now in the middle of 2015, life is looking much brighter due in part to the medical expertise of the Haematology Department at Ninewells Hospital, but also we believe to the power of prayer. We give thanks to all concerned”.

In our pews there are prayer cards but if you do not come to church and wish us to pray for you then either telephone the minister (779278) or the church office (737294) with your request. You do not need to give any personal information.

PRAYER GROUP

So you want to get married and you would like to have a service in Barnhill St Margaret’s Church. Maybe you have some questions such as.....

Who can be married in this Church? If you live in Barnhill or your par-ents live in the Parish then it is pos-sible to be married in Church.

Must we be members of the Church? No – it is not necessary. We would expect you to believe in God because it is before Him that you will make your vows of love and loyalty. You may however, wish to take the opportunity of discovering who God is and join others in their search.

What should we do? The Minister is happy to meet with couples who wish a Christian Mar-riage. Please contact her and she will arrange to meet you both. She will expand on some of the things already mentioned and try to an-swer any other questions you have.

WEDNESDAY SERVICES Begin again on 28 October

On Easter Sundays, members of the Congre-gation gather in the beautiful surroundings of the Rock Garden for an early morning service. We were interested to hear that the Rock Gar-den has been looked after for 60 years by a group of 'Friends' whose aim is to preserve and enhance the garden. In addition, the 'Friends' organise visits to other gardens and places of interest; they have 4 winter talks and issue 2 newsletters per year. Each Monday at 11am some members meet to carry out maintenance and improvements and they would welcome anyone who would like to come along to help. Contact John Grocott 779581

We had a fantastic week at the start of the Summer holidays. We learned that we can never make too many mistakes; we can never be too ordi-nary; we can never be too near or far; we can never be too bad; we can never be too young to be part of God’s expedition. Thanks to Dave Fairbairn for his amazing igloo and to Ian Philp for the loan of the Polar Bear - they certainly helped to set the scene. Thanks to all the children and their parents as well as the helpers and leaders for making it such a great week. Beth Duncan

Polar Explorers Holiday Club

Once again we were delighted to welcome the School Leavers from Barnhill Primary School to lunch after their Prize giving. The children came with their parents and teachers and everyone enjoyed the food prepared and served by our catering team. Our thanks go to everyone who helped make this such a happy occasion. Congratulations go to our member Angela McGechaen who will shortly be taking over as Head Teacher at Barnhill Primary. We wish her well.

The Golf Outing was once

again a great success. Around 70 Church Members and Friends played a game of golf at Ashludie and enjoyed a well earned meal. £692 was raised by this event and the roof of the Session Room will benefit from this generosity. Thanks are due to the organisers – Rhona and Fiona – and to those who contributed raffle prizes.

A well deserved seat after preparing the lunch. Thank you ladies!

Through various fundraising we have been supporting our minister’s daughter Vivien and the work she does at Sefton Village in the school, children’s home and her local church . We have also helped fund feeding programmes in local schools. In Manila we have supported Ron and Joanna who have a church on the rubbish dump in Tondo. Recently the older members of Junior Church had a stall with cake, candy, plants and books. Our younger children had a craft day printing canvas bags and we look forward to purchasing these to raise more funds.

Barnhill P7’s Leaver’s Lunch

Ron and Joanna visited us earlier in the year and updated us on the work that they are doing among the needy folk living on the Tondo dump. While they were with us they sang a song called ‘Dry and Weary Land’ which touched the hearts of many who heard them sing. They have now produced an album called ‘Glimmer’ which is on sale at a cost of £12 and can be purchased at the church office. The 11 tracks were all written by Ron with some featuring the voices of their community choir on Tondo dumpsite. All the monies raised will go back into their ministry.

Last Saturday we celebrated the 21st anniversary of the opening of the chil-dren’s home in Sefton Village. We had a short service followed by a fundrais-ing event entitled ‘Meal for a Cause’, It was great hearing the impact that the children’s home has made in so many lives over the years. Every week August and I go to the hospital and pray for the sick. Lately the hospital has been very full with many cases of dengue fever which comes from mosquitoes. We continue to have our kids club once a month. There are normally around 110 chil-dren who attend and our youth service on a Friday night is growing in number. We have outreaches in two ‘squatters’ areas every week. Communication is hard in one of the areas as they only have their own local dialect so we use this opportunity to give out bread to them. They love to see us. We thank you for your continued

support to us in the ministry. We

appreciate it so much.

With love from Vivien and August x
