MY JOURNEY
The NDF and my involvement with it
• Involved in a Rotary project in East
Timor in 2005
• Reflecting on the dental situation
for the needy in Australia
• I concluded where I worked in
comfortable Bellevue Hill, I was
sheltered from real dental problems
of those less fortunate
• Volunteering in difficult third world
situations is not for everyone
MY JOURNEY
• Visiting Timor with Drs. Sheen, Meihubers et al
• What about Sydney, NSW and Australia?
• Trial days at BHD – YOTS & Matt Talbot
• Interest from colleagues
• Contact from Merv Saultry, Dental Innovations
• Birth of the NDF
EARLY DAYS
• Dental Innovations - Mr Merv Saultry
• Freehills Solicitors
• Mr. Simon Bailey
• Victoria trial day - Dr John Osborne
• NSW 2 or 3 early Volunteer Days
Jennifer – one of our many successes
She never smiled Now she is happy to!
It is easier to get work when you can smile and have
more confidence
WHO ARE WE?
• The National Dental Foundation is a dentist initiated registered
charity, acting as a focal point for charitable work in the
Australian dental industry.
• The Foundation has been incorporated and has received ATO
Endorsement as a Public Benevolent Institution.
• We link Dental Professionals and their teams who give their time
and expertise, and the people who need our help - via charities
and NDF coordinators, who liaise between the two groups.
• The Foundation acts as a coordinating and fund raising body at
Federal level directed by State members of the Board.

FUNDING
• Federal Government funding for 3 years from 2012
• Allowed for appointment of part time State Coordinators
and a National Coordinator
• At present NSW is the only state that financially supports
NDF. COHS is integral to this
• Corporate Funding – Pacific Smiles Group have been the
major sponsor since 2015
• ADIA Support at Trade functions and ADIA Trade shows
THE MODEL
• Dentists are asked to volunteer their practice to treat
disadvantaged patients
• Each patient is referred by registered charities and assessed
by our network of State Coordinators prior to the
appointment
• Many patients attend with a case worker
• A lot of cases are people in desperate need and in pain and
have fallen through the safety net of public services
DENTAL RESCUE DAYS
• The Dental Rescue Day program is targeted specifically at
people working towards becoming productive and self
supporting members of the community again
• Dental treatment aims to improve dental health, speech,
presentation and self esteem
• Charities register to participate, support clients attending
appointments and ensure referred clients meet specified
guidelines
DENTISTS
• We greatly value dentists time
• We are well aware of the challenges to home, work, life balance
• Charities are highly respectful of your contribution
“Some of these people have
been damaged by different
circumstances of life. Some of
them simply need a bit more
tender loving care than can be
offered through the public
system.”
“I’ve never thought we could
change everything, however, I
am very pleased that we can get
to those people who are the
most needy. It might just get
someone a job or even give
them confidence to take part in
society at a higher level.”
NOT JUST DENTISTS
• Dental industry, ADIA
• Dental technicians
• Dental Hygienists and Therapists
• Nurses
CLIENTS
We support clients from registered charities who may be
participating in one of the following programs:
• Domestic and family violence support / accommodation services
• Drug and/or alcohol rehabilitation
• Homeless support services
• Low socioeconomic background support services
• Recovering from a long term illness or injury

Feedback
"[Treatment] not only relieves their pain but it's great for their self-
esteem they feel like someone cares about them.''
(Parramatta News, June 2007)
“It is very worthwhile; most of my clients have never been to a
dentist. When I take them all together to such a beautiful surgery,
it’s like a trip out for the day. They are a lot more health conscious
afterwards”
(Coordinator – HopeStreet Community program, Wooloomooloo)
“ALL the people attending this clinic were overwhelmed with Dr.
XX’s generosity. Everyone attending the clinic was treated with
dignity and respect. This is very much appreciated and valued by
our residents.” (Program Manager, Kooloorah Centre)
Marion Centre
Marion Centre residents made and laminated appreciation
certificates and celebrated the gift of dental care.
“I had never seen her smile before.”
“I love smiling now (big grin) – and it really helped with
the job interview.”
Look up the Marion Centre closure and why we are needed
and why we learn not to be dependant on Government
funding

NEW SOUTH WALES
• Of course, close to my heart.
• Under State Coordinator, Ms Wendy Chin the program has
evolved and grown especially with the assistance of the
ADA NSW
• Since 2011, NDF NSW has facilitated more than
$1,400,000 worth of treatment
• ,round Australia close to double this figure - around $4m
• About 100 dentists have now volunteered
• Many more nurses, hygienists, dental lab technicians

THE FUTURE
• Futureproofing – merger with ADAF
• As current directors look to the future we need younger volunteer dentists with
the same vision to take us forward
• ADA at State and National (Inc.) level is closely involved
• We recognize most of us are ADA members and as a result want seamless
cooperation
• We are grateful to the ADA for this
• NDF is an Independent Foundation and as such can raise funds and claim Tax
deductions
“You don’t always
hear the good stories,
but I've seen many
dentists who
volunteer for this
program year after
year without
expecting anything in
return. NDF NSW as
an organised pro
bono program helps
us connect and
support each other
and brings the
important message of
oral health to the
most disadvantaged
in our communities.”
