A message from the Quebec Minister of Health and Social Services

Family medicine is unlike any other specialty in that it allows practitioners to accompany patients throughout their lives. To be a family physician is to be a member of a community and to safeguard the health of its men, women and children. It is also about teaming up with

other health care professionals with the goal of providing high quality front-line care to the entire population.

I have made access to front-line services a priority. The government continues to set up family medicine groups all across Quebec, as well as network clinics, which are orga-nized on the basis of interdisciplinary teamwork.

All of these formulas contribute to making the practice more interesting for family physicians wishing to pursue their career in a modern and stimulating organization. Choosing family medicine as a profession enriches one’s personal life as well. For a community, being able to rely on a family physician is an undeniable asset. I encourage those who are attracted by this avenue to persevere: Quebec needs you to consolidate front-line medicine.

I congratulate the students and McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine and its partners for organizing this symposium on family medicine.

Dr. Yves Bolduc

A message from the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University

Today’s Symposium is an exciting testament to the initiative and drive of our students. Held to promote family medicine as a rewarding career choice, the 2nd Family Medicine Student Symposium is an event organized by medical students

for medical students. At McGill University we are proud and honoured to host this event, which promises to ignite a passion for this crucial field.

Five medical faculties, numerous partner organiza-tions and the provincial government have come together to ensure you get the most out of the day’s activities. An outstanding roster of practitioners has graciously agreed to share their expertise with you through workshops and conferences. Today’s event is a unique opportunity for you to discover what distinguishes family medicine, to meet with hundreds of fellow future health care professionals and to participate in an enriching exchange.

As we head into the next decade, family medicine is becoming an increasingly vital specialty in its own right and is critical in helping us move towards a sustainable health care system. A strong family medicine presence in our medical structure ensures a stronger and a healthier population. Our hope is that the 2nd Family Medicine Student Symposium will take a giant stride towards the advancement of this field in Quebec.

I wish you all a wonderful event.

A message from the Vice-Principal (Health Affairs) and Dean of Medicine at McGill University

There has never been a more exciting time to enter the field of family medicine. Unique among specializations, family medicine requires cutting-edge knowledge and skills across disciplines. Highly sought after throughout

Quebec, Canada, and indeed, the world, family doctors are at the heart of the modern health care system. The role of family physicians will become only more important as the era of personalized medicine takes shape in this decade.

The privilege of this field is treating the whole patient. New diagnostic tools will give family doctors an unprec-edented molecular understanding of each individual, ad-vancing the profession beyond the most daring dreams of our ancestors. No one will understand the unique needs of each patient better than the general practitioner.

I am delighted that McGill has been part of the revi-talization of Family Medicine, together with the Quebec government, our sister universities and partners from across the field. This – the 2nd Family Medicine Student Symposium – is instrumental to the ongoing success of our efforts. The day promises to educate, encourage, inform and inspire.

Dr. Richard I. Levin

A message from the Interim Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at McGill University

I would like to extend to all a very warm welcome to the 2nd Family Medicine Student Symposium. Through its many workshops and conferences, this Symposium gives you a glimpse into the varied and rewarding career that family medicine offers.

This is truly an exciting time for the specialty of family medicine, as it continues to adapt and evolve. A diverse and flexible practice, a great variety of clinical challenges, a wide-range of skills, a perspective of the whole person and a priviledged relationship with patients over time – these are but a few of the elements that make family medicine such a wonderful profession!

A message from McGill University FaMSIG On behalf of the Family Medicine Student Interest Group (FaMSIG), we want to thank you for being a part of the 2nd Family Medicine Student Symposium.

We are proud to have organized this exciting event and hope that this day will help expose you to the many fascinating aspects of family medicine. We are especially thrilled to welcome students from Université Laval, Université de Sherbrooke, Université de Montréal and the University of Ottawa on our beautiful campus.

This event would not be possible without the gen-erous support of the provincial government and part-ner organizations, who together share our passion for family medicine. Now, more than ever, this dynamic field is being recognized as a vital area of medicine, the foundation of 21st century health care. As medical students, we are looking forward to the opportunities this will bring for all of society, and it is our hope that you, too, will say – I am family medicine!

Have a great Symposium,

Dr. Vania Jimenez Family Physician Medical Director, CSSS de la Montagne Regarded as one of the best family physicians in the country, Dr. Jimenez is a teacher, researcher, clinician and medical director of the CSSS de

la Montagne. She was recently named the McGill Faculty of Medicine representative for the trans-Canada AFMC (Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada) coordinated initiative in Haiti. She was in the Caribbean country this past spring as part of a medical team providing on-site care to earthquake victims. Green SymposiumReducing consumptionAs a participant of the 2nd Family Medicine Student Symposium, you have been given a welcome pack, which includes an ecological bag and a reusable water bottle. We encourage you to use these bottles during the day in order to reduce waste – fountain beverages will be available at the McIntyre Building should you wish to refill the bottle. Thank you for helping us in our commitment to being green!

Printing of all promotional material for the 2nd Family Medicine Student Symposium was kept to a minimum in an effort to reduce waste.

PlanetairThe 2nd Family Medicine Student Symposium is proud to have obtained the carbon-neutral certification of the Planetair program. To make sure the Symposium’s ecological footprint would be as low as possible; the organizing committee chose to offset the carbon emis-sions produced by the event by buying carbon credits from Planetair.

These credits help the non-profit organization myclimate to develop projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions directly, at the source, in countries such as India, Indonesia, Madagascar, South Africa, Turkey, New Zealand and Brazil.

Planetair also raises the awareness of individuals, corporations and institutions about their impact on the global climate. It is the hope of the organizing com-mittee for the 2nd Family Medicine Student Symposium that together we can all make a positive difference for the health of our planet.
