Chainnan's wclcontc

O n behalf of the O rganizing Com mittee, it is my honour and pleasure to cordially invite you to attend the J rd Pan European Voice Conference, to be held at the University of Utrecht, on August 26 - 29, 1999. T he Institute o f Phoniatrics assumes with great enthusiasm the challenge of supporting this major scientific event.

The choosen topic, as agreed by the Advisory Board, will be "Occupational Voice : Care & C ure" . It has become at the end of this miUenium a major field of interest not only from a medical , but also socia l and economic point of view. In our modern way of life, more than 20 % of the active popu lation uses the vo ice as a main tool for the professional activity.

Teachers, salesmen, managers, lawyers, singers, actors, etc. constan tly need to teach, explain, convince, pe rsuade, decide, move , touch, and charm w ith their voices. The m ental as well as physical stress and loading on the voice may induce a d ramatic conflict between demand~ and capacities, whi le the slightest vocal impairment can have major psychological and financial implications. O ccupational voice pathology has become a specific chapter among occupational d iseases, as for example noise induced hearing loss. In several European countries, insurers now consider voice professions as being at risk for recognized occupational pathology. Duri ng PEVOC Ill all aspects of this topic will be discussed: prevention, hygiene, basic science, biomechanics, pathophysio logy, epidemiology, measurement of voice loading, testing and diagnosing, functional, medical and phonosurgical treatme nt, voice coaching, medico-legal and insurance aspects, room and theatre acoustics, technical aids and vo ice ampli fi ers, etc. It will be an unique "State o f the Art" conference.

Come also to Utrecht for enjoying the h istorical city cen tre, our social programm e, and the world famous Festival of Ancient M usic.

I pcrsona!Jy look forward to welcoming you to the Netherlands in summertime. Try our hospitali ty!

With warm greetings,

Prof.dr. P. I-1. Dejonckere , C hairman
