Our Mission

Dean’s Delegate Report There is a very beautiful hymn used in many of our parishes. It is entitled “We Remember.” We remember how Jesus loved us to His death; we celebrate His Presence in our midst, especially when we celebrate the Eucharist; and we believe that we will see Him when He comes again in glory.

We remember, we celebrate, and we believe describes very well the history and ministry of our Newman Catholic Schools. We remember those giants in the faith who sacrificed so much to establish our Catholic Schools in our parishes. We stand on their shoulders. In the past the school was often built before the Church.

We celebrate how God is working through our school community passing on the faith to our young people through the celebration of the liturgy, through the religion class and through the overall atmosphere of our schools – the way we treat one another with love and respect.

Finally, we believe God is working in the lives of our young people by helping them discover their gifts so they can better help others.

So we remember the rich history of our Newman Catholic Schools, we celebrate their ministry and we believe they are passing on the gift of faith to our young people.

This would not be possible if it wasn’t for you, our benefactors, and your generous support. You make it possible for us to carry out this awesome ministry. You have our humble thanks and know that you and your families are in our prayers.

God Bless you for your super support.

Newman Catholic Schools’ preschool through twelfth grade program provide experiences that enable students to become positive, independent and responsible citizens who will continue their lives in Catholic tradition. The responsibility of instilling Catholic values into the daily lives of our students rests on our teaching faculties, supporting families, parishioners and pastors, the entire constituency that composes the Catholic Church.

Rev. William Grevatch,Dean’s Delegate for NCS

A prayer to reflect our guiding beliefs. God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I HAVE MY MISSION. I may never know it in this life But I shall be told it in the next. I AM A LINK IN A CHAIN. A bond of connection between persons. He has not created me for naught. I shall do good -- I shall do His work. – Prayer excerpt by Blessed John Henry Newman

Mission Statement Newman Catholic Schools provides excellence in education in a Catholic environment and enhances the personal and spiritual growth of our students to meet life’s challenges.

The Value of a Newman Catholic Schools’ Education By Dr. Janet M. Klosinski

During the 2012-2013 year, Newman Catholic Schools celebrated its 25th year as a unified system. What a great accomplishment. To say we learned a lot of lessons over that time might just be an understatement. We could probably write the “how-to” book. Over that time, we also acknowledged the constants – the things that are always the same; the things that should remain the same. One of the constants is the tremendous value in giving students a Catholic school education. This was true 130 years ago when our Catholic immigrants started schools in the Wausau area and it’s still true today. Catholic schools have a tremendous value.

According to the dictionary, “value” means a stated belief or the worth of something. A Newman Catholic Schools’ education has a value because the Catholic faith is taught and infused in academic learning and thus passed to the next generation. Our namesake, Blessed John Henry Newman, wrote that an education rooted in faith and academic learning is the only complete way to educate a student. It is the best way to teach. Together faith and knowledge make a difference in the lives of our students well after they leave our schools. The value is long lasting.

The value of a Newman Catholic Schools’ education comes alive through our people. Pastors, parishioners, alumni, staff, parents, students and supporters have worked together to build this system and provided hundreds and hundreds of students with a great Catholic school education. There might have been times where opinions differed, but the belief in the value of a Catholic school education inspired everyone to work on. It has always been for the kids.

The value of a Catholic school is centered back to our unique identity. Catholic schools have been and will continue to be places of truth. By teaching to the whole person - spirit, mind, and body; Catholic schools inspire students to grow in faith and knowledge, and this helps them develop the personal qualities needed to live in an ever changing world.

As we look ahead to the next 25 years in Newman Catholic Schools, we are using our lessons of the past and believe our future is brighter than ever. Our enrollment is stable and we are expecting an increase for the new school year. We have improved many operations to increase efficiency, expanded programming and curricula, incorporated technology, completed major capital projects, reduced debt, expanded tuition assistance to families, and strengthened procedures and practices. All of our schools are accredited and our licensed child care programs are YoungStar rated. At every step of the way we ask ourselves, “How can we do this better?” Our next 25 years are all about increasing the value of a Catholic School education and Newman Catholic Schools acknowledges our wonderful people will be right there with us - giving us a helping hand, keeping us in prayer, and supporting our students and families. God has truly blessed Newman Catholic Schools!

Thank you for being a special part of the legacy of Newman Catholic Schools. From our students and staff, we will keep you in our prayers.

In Christ,

Dr. Janet M. Klosinski, President

What an incredible year it has been for me as principal at Newman Catholic Middle and High Schools! It is such a privilege to serve this wonderful group of students and our fantastic staff through the many functions of my role here. I was recently reflecting on how I landed at Newman Catholic and it is clear to me that God’s will and my desires have met in this vocation. Thank you all for your continued support of our role in serving God’s kingdom by offering the greater Wausau area a school in which a challenging and successful college preparatory academic program can be unified with a community fervidly based in our common Catholic Faith.

I have served God and education at several fine academic institutions during my career and am duly impressed with the rigor I have encountered at Newman. It still wows me a bit that our staff is comprised of graduates from Princeton, Yale, Northwestern, Marquette, Madison and several other excellent institutions. All of our teachers have clearly demonstrated to me this year that they are at the top of their game as instructors in their fields. That surely is part of the reason that Newman is so extremely successful in their consistently high ACT scores, AP test results, scholarship awards, and placement in excellent universities. I am very proud to count myself a part of Newman Catholic Schools and intend to make this my home as long as it will have me.

I have truly enjoyed getting to know our kind and generous parents, our respectful and courteous young men and women, and our dedicated alumni and friends. Please feel free to stop by our schools at any time and I promise you too will be impressed with the continued growth and development of our buildings and grounds, our excellent staff and our wonderful young people that God calls to His Kingdom through our work in Faith and Education.

Your Brother in Christ

Mr. James Delikowski, Principal, Newman Catholic Middle/High School

Greetings Newman Friends & Family!

The 2012-2013 school year for Newman Catholic Elementary School: St. Mark was another wonderful year! The enrollment was up for the third year in a row and based on the registrations that are coming in for next year along with the new DCE 4K community partnership opportunity, enrollment should be up once again. This was my second year as principal at NCES: St. Mark after the retirement of Mrs. Jeannie Lang. The NCES: St. Mark school community continued its long standing tradition of “Doing What Jesus Would Do”, reaching out to others through service. We once again participated in food drives with St. Mark Parish Circle of Joy Food Pantry, shared messages of thanks to our Honor Flight Veterans, and funds raised through our annual Giving Store were once again divided amongst six different non-profit organizations. The students also participated in many outreach activities to the local nursing homes; they performed the school Christmas program for the residents; made Christmas decorations and Valentine cards, exchanged pen pal letters, and then were able to spend an afternoon playing bingo with their pen pals.

This past year, NCES: St. Mark acquired a set of twenty iPads and cart for student use. This introduction of iPads into the classroom was a positive educational experience for the students. As the school year comes to a close, the teachers and staff may go home for the summer, but their work is never done as they continue to research new and exciting ideas for the upcoming school year.

On behalf of the Newman Catholic Elementary School: St. Anne and Newman Catholic Early Childhood Center: St. Michael staff, I would like to thank all of you for your continued support during this school year. Your dedication to Newman Catholic Schools and our students is immensely appreciated. THANK YOU to parents and friends, you are a valuable and important component of the success of our school program. This is reflective of the excellent partnership between home and school that enhances and enriches the educational opportunities On behalf of the students and teachers; we wish to express our gratitude to our families. With your assistance we were able to accomplish many things such as fostering joy and excitement for learning, providing encouragement and guidance to our young people as they mature and aiding in the spiritual growth of your children.

God Bless,

Emily Miller, Principal, Newman Catholic Elementary School: St. Anne &Newman Catholic Early Childhood Center: St. Michael

Newman Catholic Early Childhood Centers at St. Michael and St. Therese are growing and thriving. The centers continue to offer high quality care and education for our youngest students. The link between NCECC: St. Michael and NCES: St. Anne continues to provide a strong connection for the child care center to the elementary school. Children and families completing 4K at the center experience a smooth transition to Kindergarten at St. Anne’s.

In the fall, NCECC: St. Therese will be hosting two sections of the new 4K sessions in partnership with the DC Everest school district. The past year has shown growth at all age groups, enough to increase our license limit. Our summer program for the school-age child continues to draw participants from around the area, with many activities and field trips to provide exciting and fun learning experiences throughout the summer. We look forward to sharing opportunities for families and students with NCES: St. Mark in the coming year.

Education CommissionThe governance of Newman Catholic Schools is a consultative structure made up of an Education Commission, whose membership includes each supporting parish pastor (including the Dean or Dean’s Delegate), as well as one appointed representative from each of the parishes. The pastor and parish representatives are the communicative link between the parishes and schools. Standing committee chairpersons are also a part of this group, as is the President and Development Director of the Newman Catholic Schools, and the Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools. The commission has delegated authority to identify and articulate Newman Catholic Schools’ educational goals and objectives by being both a policy forming and consultative body. It is, however, advisory in nature to the President, who - in consultation with the local Dean, or his Delegate, Wausau Area Pastors, the Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Schools, and the Bishop - makes the final decisions regarding the school system and its operation.

Newman Catholic Schools Awarded District Accreditation

By Dr. Janet Klosinski

Newman Catholic Schools (NCS) was granted District Accreditation from the AdvancED Accreditation Commission, the national commission that confers the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) accreditation seal. This means that NCS and all of its schools, Preschool – Grade 12, are accredited, and that Newman Catholic Schools is recognized across the nation as a quality school system. The accreditation process involves three ongoing components: 1) meeting high quality standards; 2) implementing a continuous process of improvement; and 3) engaging in quality assurance through internal and external review.

District Accreditation as conferred by the AdvancED Accreditation Commission provides Newman Catholic Schools a nationally-recognized mark of quality for our school system and all the schools within our district. It demonstrates to our community our commitment to excellence in education, our openness to external review and feedback, and our desire to be the best we can be on behalf of the students we serve. We are grateful to all of our supporting Catholic parishes, our teachers, staff, parents and community supporters for the outstanding work they are doing to provide our students with exceptional Catholic school education.

Newman Catholic Schools was commended for:

1. Evidence of strong Catholic identity

2. Managing district reorganization while concurrently pursuing AdvancED accreditation

3. Faculty and staff at NCS are dedicated to the success of all students

4. Clear, concise and effective communication with stakeholders

5. Strong leadership by district administration

Continuing the Road to Excellence and ImprovementToday we are well on our way in “Year 3” of a five year improvement process, and we remain focused on our journey of excellence. Our ongoing work in school and system improvement keeps us grounded to our mission and our commitment to improvement and educational excellence.

Since receiving our accreditation, we have been working on the following:

1. Implement an annual process of parent, student and staff surveys

2. Communicate survey results and involve stakeholders

3. Refine improvement goals based on surveys, student data and internal standards review

4. Implement teacher action plans to meet the goals

5. Measure progress on the goals

6. Report progress to stakeholders

7. Prepare for our next External Review

We would like to recognize the members of the System Improvement Committee on Accreditation. This group of hard working individuals guides us on our quest for excellence.

Newman Catholic Schools continue to grow stronger and more highly regarded every year thanks to the support we receive from parents, past parents, grandparents, alumni, parishioners, faculty, staff and our business community. It is impossible to name the countless ways our supporters give – in both small and large ways that have enormous and lasting impact. We are grateful that the tradition of generosity and commitment continues to enrich our schools and students.

Funding for Newman Catholic Schools comes from three major sources:

• Tuition/Fees• Parish Investment• Donations, Fundraising & Miscellaneous

Tuition and parish support account for the majority of income to the school system, however, additional fund-raising efforts are necessary because these revenues alone do not cover the full cost of each student’s education.

With your generous gift, you have an opportunity to share the gifts God has granted you by supplementing operating expenses, assisting with tuition needs, providing scholarships, making resources available to attract quality educators, maintaining our buildings and providing funds to keep our educational resources current.

We ask you to prayerfully reflect on how you can share your gifts with Newman Catholic Schools. Be a lasting part of a tradition of faith, academic and co-curricular excellence. We celebrate and sincerely appreciate the generosity of our donors. Your commitment and philanthropic support have enabled Newman Catholic Schools to ensure the excellence in education you have come to expect.

Contribute to the Annual Fund, Winter Wonderland Benefit Auction, Silent Cardinal Tuition Assistance, Scholarships, Memorials, participate in the Scrip gift card program or make a restricted gift. Gifts to Newman may be mailed to NCS Development Office, 619 Stark Street, Wausau, WI 54403, or through our secure online giving page at newmancatholicschools.com. Supporting Newman Catholic Schools

Thank YouAnonymous Angel! At Newman Catholic Schools we are thankful for our many blessings. We know that all we are able to accomplish is due to the generous support of our alumni, parishes, parents, past parents, friends and community.

Thanks to a generous donation of $300,000, the final phase of new windows and upgrade to the HVAC system was completed at the Newman Catholic Middle/High School campus in the summer of 2011.

Thank YouMany of our benefactors wish to remain anonymous or don’t want us to call a lot of attention to the good deeds they do for NCS.

Thank you Newman Angels! Your generosity and support means so much.

Harold & Ruth Tessmer EstateNewman Catholic Schools was blessed with a lasting gift from the Harold and Ruth Tessmer Estate. Approximately $270,000 was added to a scholarship endowment managed by the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin. This will support annual scholarships to students attending Newman Catholic High School. We are hoping to support sophomores as a way to continue our Building the Future Program.

Newman Catholic Schools Announces . . .

“Building the Future” Donation and Tuition Grant Program Wausau, WI. – July 31, 2012 – Newman Catholic Schools (NCS) is pleased to announce receipt of a $1.2 million gift from the estate of Leon and Alma Burger, long-time Wausau area residents and members of The Church of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus, Wausau. Leon Burger passed away in March 2011 at the age of 94. Burger worked as a local business owner in the trucking and property development area. As a business owner and builder, Mr. Burger provided numerous jobs and positively impacted many Wausau area families. Gifts of $1 million to Newman Catholic Schools and $200 thousand to Newman Catholic High School respectively were presented by Burger’s representatives in a private meeting.

Ted Burger Jr., Burger’s nephew, noted his aunt and uncle were people of “great faith”. They believed a Catholic school education was very important. Leon Burger followed the activity of Newman Catholic Schools and felt the system was “doing the right things” as it responded to challenges related to demographic and economic challenges. Newman Catholic Schools is funded entirely through private support with approximately 35% directly from local Catholic parishes and the remainder from tuition paid by parents, gifts, donations and fundraising.

The majority of the unrestricted Burger gift will be used to offer additional tuition support. The Building the Future Program was established to help NCS families and honor the work of Leon and Alma Burger. Two different tuition grants are currently available; first, for students entering grades: K, 1, 6 and 9 and second, to families with three or more students enrolled in NCS. All grants are in the form of reduced price tuition. The Building the Future Program also supports the NCS Tuition Assistance Program which is open to all NCS families and includes an application process.

NCS Increases Scholarship and Tuition Assistance FundingNewman Catholic Schools offers scholarships and tuition assistance every year to current and in-coming students. In 2012-2013 over $400,000 was awarded through the NCS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). The majority of aid available to help families with tuition expenses comes from:

• Burger Building The Future tuition grants

• Unrestricted gifts to the NCS Annual Fund Appeal

• Donations to NCS Silent Cardinal Program

• Southeast Asian Tuition Program

• Bishop’s Tuition Assistance Program

Together we will build a bright future for our students and the NCS Catholic school ministry.

Matching GiftsDonations are often matched by an individual’s place of employment. Companies with a Matching Gifts Program recognize the importance of charitable giving. These programs give added incentives to employees to increase their gifts.

Newman Catholic Schools is fortunate to be on the receiving end of matching gifts from many companies. We thank both the individual donors and their employers for their generosity.

By Dr. Janet Klosinski

Leon and Alma Burger were people who valued their faith, friendships with others, hard work, and lived humbly. The Burgers were lifelong residents of the Wausau area. As a child, Leon received his early sacraments at St. Mary Parish on Grand Avenue in Wausau, and later was a member of the Church of the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

As a teen growing up during the Great Depression, Leon saw firsthand how hard times were for area farmers. He believed he could make a difference and be successful if he owned a truck. He could haul goods for the farmers and others who lived out in the country. With the help of his mother, young Leon bought his first truck and the story of Burger Trucking started. Over time Leon expanded his business to include trucking and commercial building. He had many people on his staff and was proud that he was helping many families. Long time Wausau residents can recall the Stop-N Go service stations and the Ponderosa Restaurant, all built by Leon.

The light of Christ was present for all to see in Leon and Alma Burger. They treasured their gift of faith and acknowledged the value of a Catholic school education. Leon and Alma established a gift for Newman Catholic Schools of 1.2 million dollars to be given after their passing. The gift was largely unrestricted. Leon’s closest advisers encouraged him to include certain restrictions. Leon observed the changes to Newman Catholic Schools as the system responded to economic and demographic challenges. He told his closest financial advisors, “They are doing the right things.” According to Leon’s wishes, this gift remained largely unrestricted so the administrators and advisors to the Catholic school system could do what was needed. In honor of a builder, Newman Catholic Schools created the Building the Future Tuition Grant Program, tuition grants to help families and stimulate enrollment. This program allows targeted tuition grants for families with 1) students entering grades K, 1, 6 and 9 and/or 2) Three or more children enrolled in NCS. We are humbled by the generosity of the Burgers and grateful for this opportunity to help families and address system needs. A portion of the gift was restricted to Newman Catholic High School.

Leon and Alma went to their eternal reward in 2011 and 1997 respectively. They remain in the hearts of everyone associated with Newman Catholic Schools as two very special angels and become part of our Newman legacy. We are ever grateful to them and inspired by this generous act of stewardship.

There are many people who have come forth to promote and strengthen Newman Catholic Schools over the years. During 2012-2013 we observed our 130th anniversary. Yes, while our unified system, Newman Catholic Schools, is 25 years old, the tradition of Catholic school education in our Wausau area community is generations strong!

William “Bill” Fredrich was a dedicated husband, godfather and friend. He valued service, leadership, hard work and education. In 2009 Marlene Fredrich established two four-year full tuition scholarships to Newman Catholic High School in memory of her late husband to help instill Bill’s values in a new generation. The scholarships are awarded every four years to deserving students who aspire to complete their secondary education at Newman Catholic High School. The first ever scholarship recipients, Ashley Priebe and Kimberly Steif graduated from Newman Catholic High School in 2013 along with Benjamin Vesel, winner of The Fredrich Scholarship. According to Marlene, “Bill was a very kind and loving man and I wanted to do something in his honor and share his special memory. Bill loved children and I wanted to help in a way that would make a difference for families. By offering the scholarships every four years, it will ensure that the recipients have the opportunity for a complete Newman Catholic High School education.”

Bill may not have had the same opportunities as youth today, but he believed in the value of education. He could often be heard telling the young people in his life to make the best of their time in high school so that they could go on to college and a good career in life.

Bill grew up in a blue-collar family and developed a strong work ethic at an early age. His career as a deputy for the Marathon County Sheriff’s department was a lifelong endeavor. Bill expected hard work and leadership from the people he worked with.

He was very committed to service and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. Bill was a faithful member of the Knights of Columbus, accepting the roles of Grand Knight in the third degree and Faithful Navigator in the fourth degree.

Family and friends were very important to Bill and he enjoyed spending time with his wife Marlene, hunting, fishing and traveling. A friend once told Bill, he sent his son to Catholic school even though he himself was not a Catholic, because he saw the difference in students that attended Catholic schools. They not only achieved better grades, but they learned respect and honor, and grew up to be fine men and women who valued the dignity of humankind.” As a lifelong Catholic, Bill appreciated the significance of his friend’s words.

Marlene’s hope in establishing the scholarships is that the spirit of Bill’s life will live on in the recipients of this award. The scholarships are available to all parochial and public school students that are active parishioners of St. Mark Parish, Rothschild. In the spring of 2005, the Most Reverend Jerome E. Listecki along with the Diocesan Finance Council, Deans, and some pastors participated in a needs assessment to identify the current and future needs for our parishes, schools and the Diocese.

From the needs assessment, a preliminary plan was developed to address the diocesan-wide needs. The leadership proposed an all-parish capital campaign where 80 percent of the funds received would remain in the parishes to address their debts (for the parish and any school(s) that it supports) and other goals at each parish. The remaining 20 percent of the gifts received would be shared with the Diocese to address its needs.

It has been a long journey since embarking on the campaign and the Newman Catholic Schools’ portion of the campaign will wrap up in December 2013. We are incredibly grateful to all Newman stakeholders and our supporting parishes for the great outpouring of pledges and support. NCS’s part of the We Belong to Christ campaign has been a great success in providing debt relief and much needed capital improvements. The sun is setting on the campaign and as St. Paul reminds us “So now finish the work and let the result be worthy.” (2 Cor. 8:11)

Thank you to the following (see page 14) for your participation in the NCS We Belong to Christ Campaign. To all of you, and to all who donated to their parish campaigns, thank you! Your participation represents an additional gift to NCS. We are so very thankful to everyone as we continue to work together to keep Catholic education in the Wausau area a strong part of our one hundred twenty plus year tradition. Please know we truly appreciate the support of each and every one of you.

To date the campaign provided:

Debt Reduction: $852,493NCS Debt (Mike Vesel, Parent of two NCHS Alumni, and two current NCHS students): “The WB2C campaign provided Newman Catholic Schools with a significant amount of funds to assist in reducing our debt and related interest costs. This, along with other gifts we have received in the last few years, have taken some of the pressure off and allowed us to focus our efforts on stabilizing and increasing our enrollment, which furthers the overall mission of Newman Catholic Schools and the entire Catholic Community”.

Capital Projects:Newman Catholic Schools – completed capital projects at Newman Catholic Middle / High School: $575,697• Window replacement / HVAC upgrade – 2009, 2010• Science Lab remodel – 2009, 2013• Athletic Fields upgrade – 2008, 2009, 2010 • Classroom renovations – 2010• New fencing – 2010 • New asphalt running track, long jump, pole vault, discus – 2011

NCHS Science Lab (Stephen Schmidt, NCS parent and NCS REC – School Forest Coordinator) “Completion of the new lab facilities at NCHS has given students the opportunity to participate in more high quality experiments in a safer environment. The new layout is better for instruction since teachers can move more easily between the lab benches and students face the same direction. In addition, the lab can be used as a classroom, which cuts down on the need to move back and forth from classroom to lab. Current students may not be aware of the differences, but students who attended during the remodel felt a boost in their pride as Newman Cardinals”.

We Belong to Christ Capital Campaign Wrap Up

So now finish the work and let the result be worthy. (2 Cor. 8:11)

The Performing Arts Foundation of Wausau brought several world class musical and artistic groups to Newman Catholic Schools through the Arts Midwest partnership. Our students had the privilege to interact with groups from Egypt, Israel, China and Bali. As part of our membership with the Kennedy Center for the Arts our students not only experienced the groups passively, they actively engaged in the history, culture and Art of each group across the curriculum. We spent weeks preparing our own interactive Art for the bands and considered their unique visits an opportunity to grow in diversity and build community internationally. We are greatly indebted and grateful to the Grand Theater and the Performing Arts Foundation for making these fantastic learning experiences possible.

Kennedy Center Partner – Newman first private school systemJohn F. Kennedy Center for the performing Arts - Partners in Education

Tanzania Elizabeth Martin, 2007 graduate of Newman Catholic High School and 2012 graduate of Carthage College, Kenosha WI, spent a year volunteering and teaching mathematic concepts in Tanzania, Africa with WorldTeach. WorldTeach is a non-profit, non-governmental, and non-sectarian organization that provides opportunities for individuals to make meaningful contributions to international education by living and working as volunteer teachers in developing countries. Her goal while in Tanzania was to gather donations to help feed the children of her school. Newman Catholic Schools held several fundraisers in support and helped her raise over $4,000, which in turn purchased over 5 tons of maize. Her students will have food long after Elizabeth returns home to the United States.

Congratulations Elizabeth and thank you for your service.

Mission Trip – Summer of 2012By Annaliese Krahn (Class of 2013)

The week I went on the Mission Trip to Cairo, IL was one of the most significant and memorable weeks of my life. Cairo is a town located in southern Illinois that was once poised to be a prosperous urban city in the early 1800’s. Although, as railroads were built, and river trading declined, Cairo was bypassed and the city’s population and prosperity rapidly diminished. The Underground Railroad ran through Cairo and was alive and active in the past; it ran both ways and participated in freeing and kidnapping blacks. During the Civil Rights movement, Cairo was the most prominently segregated town in Illinois and racial tensions were high, and still exist today despite some attempts at desegregation. Even though I was prepared for the poverty of Cairo, I was overwhelmed with how abandoned and rundown the town seemed.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect upon arriving in Cairo. I already felt uncomfortable and out of my comfort zone. Many of the material items and comforts I took for granted at home were not there in Cairo. On the first night, I met many people on the Mission Trip from other parts of Wisconsin and Illinois who would be my friends and even family for the week. During the week I participated in work projects and Kids’ Club. My group picked up garbage at parks, repainted lines on a basketball court, and spent a lot of time repainting a restroom facility. As we worked, community members would stop by and ask about what we were doing. They were so thankful for our help in assisting their community! It made me feel special knowing how much the work I was doing could impact a person’s life. It was so great to see how excited the kids were to come to Kid’s Club. I rode in one of the vans that picked up the kids and they would come running out of the houses, full of energy. At Kid’s Club, they would learn about God, have outside time, do arts and crafts, and practice reading books.

Mission Trip was not only an amazing opportunity to serve the Cairo community, but it was also a great chance to strengthen my relationship with God. We would have Devotions, which were individual prayer sessions in the mornings that gave us time to reflect on what our purpose was in Cairo and also on what God’s plan and purpose was for us in the future. At night, we would have Club, which was lead by the counselors. Club included a time for worship, games, skits, and witness talks. We would also have discussions with our groups in which we talked about our days and prayed with each other and shared our feelings. I truly felt that through my Mission Trip experience I became more identified with myself and stronger in my relationship with God. That week at Mission Trip was such an incredible experience that truly changed my life. I will never forget it!

We believe that everyone can help Newman Catholic Schools. Whether it is your prayers, spirit of volunteerism, words in support of our schools, or your generous donations – each of us has the ability to help shape the future of NCS.

Opportunities to Make a Difference

Methods of Giving:

Contributions are accepted through a variety of means including cash gifts, employee matching gifts, securities and planned gifts that encompass gift annuities, life insurance and bequests, and gifts-in-kind. Cash GiftsCash gifts can be made in the form of a check or charge. You may also wish to pledge your contribution over a period of time. Pledges to the Annual Fund are accepted on a fiscal year basis. Pledge payments should be completed by June 30 to be included in the current fiscal year and Annual Report. EmployerMatching GiftsMany companies will match the contributions their employees make to tax-exempt institutions. This match can double the amount of your gift. Newman Catholic Schools will offer gift recognition for the amount of your gift plus the match and the name of the company. Ask your employer about their matching gift program and include their form along with your gift.

Gifts-in-KindNewman Catholic Schools welcomes donations and services that in turn will benefit our schools. The donor, through an appraisal, record of purchase, or billing statement determines the gift value. Gifts should follow the gift acceptance guidelines. Life InsuranceDesignating Newman Catholic Schools as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy benefits the students while providing substantial tax benefits to you, the donor. The premiums are tax-deductible if the school is selected as both the owner and the beneficiary. MemorialsGifts may be made to memorialize and honor a member of your family or loved one.

Memorial / Named Scholarship

Gifts may be pledged in memory of an individual and / or sponsorship of a scholarship. All gifts will be recognized in the Annual Report and the family or person informed that a gift was received.

Securities

Stocks, bonds, and mutual funds are excellent ways to give particularly if they have appreciated in value. Transferring gifts to the school can bring the donor tax savings by providing a deduction for the full fair market value of the stock when the gift is made. (Stocks generally must have been held for more than eighteen months.) Another advantage with the donation of a security is the exemption of capital gains taxes afforded you.
