TRANSCRIPT
Chairman Ramblings- By Rick Smiley
As you can see my ramblings are rather short this month. Reason why? I just returned from Corvettes of Carlisle. And what a trip it was! Everyone should go at least once. If you like Corvettes, this is the place to be. It is miles and miles of Corvettes, corvettes for sale, and all years of Corvette parts. Per my watch, we walked 15 miles, yes 15 miles. That is down-hill and uphill. The downhill part was easy. And still I did not see all that was to be seen. I see a return trip in my future. On the way to Carlisle I had the opportunity to visit the Corvette Museum. I had not been to the museum since it first opened. Let me tell you, it has changed a lot. The door we use to use to
go into the museum back then is now an exit. One cannot fathom the sinkhole until you see the outline on the floor and the map on the wall. The hole was huge. The damage done to the cars is incredible. I can go on and on about this trip but I think I will save it for a future article. I have included a few pictures however.
That is all she wrote.
“The Chairman”
Just a friendly reminder, our meeting on September 8 will include a Judging School and a Judging Meet. Cars to be judged will be a ‘63 FI roadster and an ‘81 with very low miles. So please be early as our meeting will start promptly at 9am. Registration is still open online.
Thank you, Dave for the great school on Corvette Fuel Injection. Thanks also to those that furnished the Fuel Injection examples so that we could actually see and examine the subject matter.
Welcome to our two new members: David Sandefur from Wichita, and Brad Hillhouse from Lincoln, Nebraska. It’s great to have both of you in our local chapter.

Judging Chairman Notes—Dave Houlihan and Bev Smiley
August’s Mechanical Fuel Injection Judging School included LOTS of money sitting on our table!
A big Thank You goes to Carl Alter, Joe Elliot, Larry Guhr and Kent Michael for their help.
Carl brought his 1963 F.I. unit and manifold. Joe displayed his collection of various years NOS
Fuel Injection body emblems. Larry brought a vintage manometer used for Ratio Lever Stop
(efficient combustion), Economy Stop, and Power Stop settings on mechanical fuel injection. Kent
brought his 1962 “Flat Top” unit including distributor and cable drive.
Correction: during my presentation I incorrectly stated multi-point fuel injection on 1957-65 units
was “ganged” (all left side fired then all right side fired). This is true of 1985-1993 electronic fuel
injection units. Kent Michael correctly pointed out 1957-65 mechanical units, while multi-point, used
continuous flow injection. (As demonstrated in short video clip.)
Kent also brought along two informative videos. First, was a 1957ish Rochester Products
promotional film showing production and testing of their new mechanical fuel injection units. Sec-
ond, was a current informational clip about mechanical F.I. units. Most telling for 1965’s production
halt to mechanical F.I., was 1965 option L84 - 375hp F.I. priced at $538, vs $129 for L76’s 365hp.
Again, thanks guys!
September’s schedule includes our Fall Judging Meet. We’ll have two cars. Dave Dennis’ recent-
ly restored 1963 - just returned from Bloomington Gold, and Brad Hillhouse’s 8000 mile 1981. Both
should be interesting cars. Please register on-line as a judge (2 judging points). Meet includes a
judging school (1 point).
Later this year I plan to have a C2/C3 frame judging school. And no, I’m not going to ask folks to
bring a frame upstairs to our meeting room! C3s were a rebody of C2s, and although 1963 thru 1982
frames shared many characteristics, there were numerous frame changes over that twenty year
lifespan.
Months ago, I was contemplating a “what-fits-what” frame question. After numerous web
searches I couldn’t find a definitive correct complete listing. There were partial listings. There were
speculative/guess work listings. And some just plain wrong listings. So, what to do? - of course -
start another list.
Gathering up all these lists, I edited together a more definitive set of changes. A NCRS Technical
Discussion Board search of “frame” generated numerous threads providing much additional
information.
I need to do some additional edits, but my plan is to submit a detailed listing (email) of year-to-
year C2/C3 frame changes to you members for your consideration/review. Collectively, I think we
can generate a useful document. So, I’d appreciate you giving some thought, in the next few months,
to frame quirks/changes you may have come across. Thanks. Dave

Vice Chairman Notes — Dave Houlihan
Some of you have noted your “About Me” profile section on NCRS’ web page now has a separate
listing of “Flight Judging Points” and “Concours Judging Points”. Totals of these two categories are
what counts toward judging awards (Master Judge, 200 Club, etc.).
Speaking about “Concours” judging. This year “Corvettes at Carlisle” events include a
Grandstand Area, NCRS Concours judging demonstration 11AM Saturday. Also at Carlisle. Brad
Hillhouse’s 1968 (Flight judged at Midway USA) is one of twenty 1968 Corvettes selected for their
50th Anniversary Display. On Page 27 of link below.

Did You Know?
Windshield washers, courtesy light, sun shades, temperature- controlled radiator fan, and parking brake warning light all became standard equipment in what year model Corvette?
My plan was to include the minutes from the July Board of Directors meeting held on July 20, 2018 in Las Vegas after the National Convention had concluded. However, I could not get the document to copy over into this document and keep the same formatting. After several failed attempts, I gave up. So instead of including them in this document, I will just send a copy of the minutes with the email when I send our newsletter. I will work on this and maybe next time I can just include it.

NATIONAL CORVETTE RESTORER SOCIETY BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING MINUTES
The August 2018 monthly meeting was held on the 11th, and called to order at 9:00 A.M. by our chapter Chairman, Rick Smiley. There were lots in attendance but I forgot to count! Rick has the sign in sheet which I have not seen yet. I’ll try to do better, but you do have other options!
Old Business:
The first bit of “old business” was to welcome new members, which seems to me that this is in the wrong section of the News Letter since how can “new members” be old business? However, Rick opened the meeting with a welcome to Brad Hillhouse of Lin-coln, NE and David Sandefur, a local member who has visited us before. Brad had us judge his ’68 prior to taking it to the Nationals in Vegas in July where it Top Flighted again. Soon he’ll be heading to Carlisle to earn another award. David has a 1981 which he brought to our meeting at the beginning of this year seeking some advice on what he should do or not do to some problem areas. His seeking advice was impres-sive to me because some of us just jump into a project until we are in over our head. I’m not there yet, but I’ve sure been close more than once!
Dallas Keller, our committed treasurer, was asked to share his financial insights into our current standing. First off, we have $2,126.67 in the checking account and our non-interest bearing $100.00 in savings, which gets us free checking. These figures are af-ter our check to the American Cancer Society which will be matched by the National Organization up to their designated limits. The money came from our June All Cor-vette Show which took in $1,307.00. With expenses of $329.62, our net income was $977.38, leaving us $900.00 for our charity.
Our Membership Chairman, Dale Green, sent his apologies for not being able to be at to-day’s meeting. He was in Colorado and once again letting his work/career take prece-dent over all of his activities. Dale always adds a positive spin to everything being said in our meetings and we miss him when he prefers to further his career.
New Business:
Rick congratulated the group in attendance for their contributions to our local chapter of the NCRS organization in achieving another year of meeting the requirements of a “Top Flight Chapter”. This is the 8th year in a row. Not only that, it’s every year since the chapter started after our year of probation. Our current and past Chairmen, Rick and Kurt Geis, deserve kudos for leading and guiding the chapter to achieve this award while still having fun. We are, aren’t we?
Rick informed us that the upcoming judging event in September is now on line and re-quests that we sign up as soon as possible if we plan on helping to judge. Since we are a small group, we need all the help we can get so please volunteer and register soon.
As most of you regulars know, there was no meeting last month because of the Nationals in Las Vegas which drew a number of our active members. Casey Coats, one of the attendees, discussed some of his experiences doing “Operations” in the heat at 5 AM. Dallas and Kerri were there also and involved in judging “Bowtie” mechanical and in-terior on 1970-1972 candidates. There were a lot of nice cars, probably all 118 in at-tendance were in that category, but there was a shortage of ‘68’s, and it was their 50th anniversary. Maybe they didn’t want to compete with last year’s turn out of ‘67’s!

Rick made an urgent appeal for articles for the Newsletter. It sounded awfully familiar to what Kurt used to say, but I fully understand the plea as it gets hard to come up with something to say every month. The minutes are just a compilation of what was said with “some interpretation”, but the Chairman has to dream about what he should say every month. Can’t some of you help him? An article, brief or otherwise, on what you have learned or experienced in your fascination with Vettes would sure help out a lot and give some variety to the Newsletter. We have an excellent Editor in Kerri, so don’t worry about your grammar or spelling. Huh, Rick?
Rick decided it was time for the group to talk about our car show. What’s to talk about? The attendance mainly. For the last two years, participants have dropped way off. Our registered count this year was 50, 13 of which were member cars, meaning only 37 cars were competing for prizes. There were 12 vehicles not associated with any of the 3 local Corvette Clubs. In the past, we have been way over 50, even approaching 100, so it’s no surprise we are wondering what we have to change in order to increase participation. As discussed, Wichita Riverfest, which included the Black Top car show and is no longer sponsored by the Ford Motor Company, may be affecting our attend-ance as does the June rainy and/or windy and hot weather. So do we move the date to the fall to escape these possible influences and try to mix it in with all the other car show events? We seemed to be somewhat speechless as Rick tried to get a discus-sion going by painting a bleak picture. Thank goodness for our new member, Brad, who shared his experiences with a car club in Nebraska. He apologized for speaking up being a new member, but I’m sure we all appreciated his ideas. We need more “new” members like that! Mike Rowley, not a new member but recently a more ac-tive one as he retired and spends more time in Wichita, added his two cents by sug-gesting that we use Social Media to create interest as the clubs in Arizona do. I hope Mike did realize that we might need someone to take on the role of “Social Media Chairman” if we pursue his contribution. We will need someone without much grey hair cause technological advancements have somewhat been ignored by us oldies. You know, the same ones that drive old Vettes!
At 10:15, Kerri Keller made a motion for the group to adjourn and Joe Elliott seconded. We then got set to listen and learn from our Co-Chairman, Dave Houlihan, as he con-ducted a Judging School on Fuel Injection.

Midway USA Chapter of NCRS in Wichita, KS promotes the enjoyment, preservation and restoration of Chevrolet Corvettes.
We meet the 2nd Saturday of each month, 9:00 a.m. at Davis-Moore Chevrolet 8200 West Kellogg.
The National Corvette Restorers Society is a non-profit hobby group of thousands of families dedicated
to the restoration, preservation, history and enjoyment of Corvettes. Membership in the National
Organization is required in order to join local chapters. Below is the website for the National Organization.
The NCRS has organized Local Chapters around the world. Local Chapters provide the opportunity to
meet NCRS Members in your region who share your love of Corvettes and the restoration and enjoyment
of these fantastic cars. Chapters hold local events such as Judging Meets, Judging Schools, Road Tours
and occasional social events.
If you wish to get the total NCRS experience you need to belong to one or more Local Chapters. The
NCRS membership is made up of people who join for the cars and continue for the wonderful friends they
have made. The easiest way to be part of that experience is through membership in Local Chapters.
