NCR REA NEWS
FROM PRESIDENT CHUCK!
I t is my distinct pleasure to comment on our 2013
Annual Meeting and Open House held on
September 7, 2013. We welcomed over 100
members for the morning session and more than
130 members and former NCR employees for the
afternoon session. It was great to see we nearly filled
the room to capacity in the afternoon.
As for the Annual Meeting itself, our Treasurer, Greg
Jump, reported we remain quite viable financially. We
continue to monitor our major expense items closely
while making sure we keep the newsletter and website
quality high for you, our valued members. You members approved the election of
Jack Wheeler as our newest Trustee as well as returning trustees Lew Cluxton, Greg
Jump, Charlie McGratty, and Dan Taylor. After the business session, we enjoyed a
very informative presentation by Bruce Langos, COO of Teradata Corporation. He
brought us up-to-date on Teradata core product and marketing strategies, employee
relations, and values.
As noted above, the room was nearly filled for the Open House presentation by Brady
Kress, President and CEO, Dayton History, on the 1913 Dayton Flood. His
knowledge of the roles played by NCR and executives John H. Patterson, Edward
Deeds, and Charles Kettering made for a highly entertaining session.
We are very grateful to Teradata and Dayton History for providing high quality
speakers, and to NCR Corporation for financially supporting the mailing of letters to
all former employees and retirees in the Dayton Region.
At our Annual Planning Meeting on October 11, I was delighted to announce the
current officers and committee chairs will be returning for the 2014 year. All your
trustees remain committed to the goals they have set.
As we enter the holiday season, I’d like to note three things for which I am very
grateful: 1) The great team of trustees, our valued administrator, Sue Schweitzer, our
newsletter editor, Steve Wicinski, and our webmaster, Lesley Baumann. 2) Your very
important financial contributions beyond your dues, and 3) Your ongoing input and
support. Please help us obtain and retain new members!
We all wish you blessed holidays and a safe and healthy 2014.
Sincerely,
Chuck Stuart, President

DID YOU KNOW? . . . . .
I n 1963, I was a Junior Accounting Machine salesman based in Fort
Worth, TX, where my territory included new car dealerships in the Fort
Worth area. The NCR 390 Computer had just been released, so I was
really anxious to find a prospect for this exciting new product.
Fortunately, I got the approval from the largest Chevrolet dealer in the city to
do a survey and proposal. They were very cooperative during the survey, and I
felt confident I could put together a winning proposal. After all, the 390 could
automate everything they were doing manually–from sales journals to payroll!
So I worked Monday through Friday on the proposal and had an appointment to
present it to the owner and his office staff by Friday afternoon, November 22.
November 22, 1963 was the day that President John F. Kennedy was scheduled
to be in Fort Worth and Dallas for a visit. First, he made a speech in Fort Worth
during the morning hours, then his caravan headed to Dallas at noon.
After lunch, as I was preparing to go present my proposal, I learned that the President had been shot. Like
everyone else in the country, I was shocked. And it was even worse knowing the shooting happened so
close by.
I called the people at the dealership and asked them if they wanted to proceed with our appointment.
Honestly, I would not have been disappointed had they requested a postponement. But the owner wanted to
proceed as scheduled. He felt that our meeting might keep our spirits up if we could continue as planned.
As a result, my proposal was very well received and I had a contract for the complete system within a
week. The installation was a success, too. So the dealership became a very loyal customer.
Back then, I was only 29 years old. Today, I’m 78. But like most of us, I can distinctly remember the
events of November 22, 1963 as if they happened yesterday.
Story submitted by Nick Gilstrap,
REA Member
Like Nick, I’m sure most of us will never forget November 22, 1963. This year marks the 50th
anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination. If you would like to let us know where you were
and what you were doing on that tragic day, please send your story to Ken Carr by email at

RETIREMENT POEM
So welcome All of us into the retirement fold.
For we will follow, and we will be bold:
Maybe some travel, to places unknown,
Maybe new jobs will become our own:
The honey doo list, will be addressed,
Our homes with our talents will now be blessed:
But whatever we do, what seeds we have sewn,
The "old NCR" IS HOW WE WILL BE KNOWN:
So join me now in another toast,
to the old NCR that we all loved the most.
To who we were, To who we are,
The heart of the "OLD N-C-R! " Submitted by Russ Brown

NEWS AND VIEWS . . .
NCR REA Welcomes New Trustee, Jack Wheeler!
J ack is a local lad who grew up in the Dayton area. After graduating from
Fairmont High School, he attended the University of Cincinnati. Then,
after a number of years in the trucking industry, he brought his valuable
experience to NCR.
In 1970, Jack joined NCR Systemedia as a Traffic Manager, where he
developed and oversaw a distribution system of trucks servicing Systemedia
plants in Mount Joy, PA, Morristown, TN, and Viroqua, WI.
Jack retired from NCR in December, 1991. Among his many activities, he
specifically enjoys golfing.
Please join us in welcoming Jack to our team!
Harold Brosowske Turns 95!
I t's always great to hear from our members. And this issue, we are pleased that
Harold Brosowske of Grayslake, IL contacted us as he looks forward to
celebrating his 95th birthday on February 25, 2014!
Harold worked in Customer Services in Mundelein, IL. He retired from NCR
in 1981 after 37 years of service!
Great to hear from you, Harold! Have a wonderful birthday and Holiday season!
Anyone Remember These?
M anufactured by National Cash Register in the early 1900s in Dayton,
OH, store owners used these to save hand-written receipts for
accounting purposes
These National Receipt Boxes, as they were called, were 6.25” long by 6.25” high
and 6.625 wide.
Truly a collector’s treasure.

HISTORY OF SYSTEMEDIA
T hree years after the formation of NCR, a large volume of printing had
developed consisting primarily of guest checks and sales books. By 1925,
the printing department had the latest printing presses, type-setting machines
and photo-engraving equipment available. The department had grown so
much that it was recognized as the largest industrial printing and cash register paper-
producing plant in the world. Based upon this experience and production capacity,
NCR, in the late 1920s, added printed forms to its product line. The company
now had the printing capability and the next step took place in 1955 when a
specialized business forms and register paper sales organization was established. Prior to 1955, sales were
handled on an incidental basis. The establishment of the new sales force provided the impetus for further
growth. Forms and register paper were joined steadily by more products until the product line covered
every type of form, either custom or stock, necessary to provide business firms with a total systems
concept. Ledgers, statements, checks, journals, guest checks, paper rolls, magnetic ledgers, continuous
forms, price marking items - the list goes on and on.
In 1964, the springboard, which would result in a great leap forward, NCR acquired Business Systems,
Inc., a highly successful Los Angeles-based business forms company. Eventually, BSI would provide the
experience and management nucleus to the Business Forms and Supply Division (as it was known then),
and fill that vital team link to a total systems concept that had been missing. Between 1964 and 1970, the
Division grew very rapidly, and one new production plant followed another until there were 10 plants
located to provide excellent service to customers. In 1970, a new division headquarters building was built
and a new name, Systemedia Division, was born. The new name was selected because it typifies in one
word the true dimension of the division. Business firms used forms and the other products of Systemedia to
communicate and record the history of their business. Two major additions were built on the headquarters,
because the growth of the business required more personnel and office space. New production equipment
went into new plants to meet the demands of the customers. A fleet of trucks was established in 1972,
based at the eastern plants, to deliver larger orders directly to the customers, and smaller orders were
hauled much closer to the customers so that they could be turned over to regional carriers for delivery.
Often, the trucks were able to bring paper and other supplies to the production plants faster - especially
when the supplies were needed for urgent customer orders.
The above paragraphs describe a little bit of the great success brought about by smart, hard-working people
to build a relatively small part of NCR's business during the last 75 years of the 19th century. As we all
know, "times have changed." In the case of Systemedia, most - if not all - of their plants are gone. Their
customers - for the most part - can produce their own paperwork or buy it nearby at a low cost. The
headquarters building was closed years ago. The remaining Systemedia products sold to customers are
now provided by outside suppliers.
