Neko has always had a passion to motivate, inspire and encourage women. Thus NCMag was born, “A Publication for Women by Women”. Since our debut in February NCMag has received rave reviews. Thank you to everyone who is supporting this project. Thousands have been inspired so far and we are looking to touch the lives of millions by up-lifting and promoting business-minded women who strive for excellence. Neko’s vision for NCMag was to create a forum for the meeting of the minds. A place where women from different backgrounds, ethnicities and generations could share experiences, information and laughs in an online environment.

I am excited about her latest venture and it is an hon-or to join this cast of talented women. I look forward to a wonderful and inspiring journey.Happy Mother’s Day!

HOW DID WHAT WOMEN WANT (W.W.W.) COME TO BE?There are two reasons. I saw a need that I could fill here in Atlanta, as well as within the beauty industry, and I wanted to bring like-minded women together.

I have been in the beauty industry in one way or another for 16 years now and I’ve been a spa consultant since 1999. I was providing my clients with seminars, workshops, sales & market-ing plans, events and handling their public relations. In addition, I had been a source of beauty & wellness information for my clients, my accounts and my friends for years. I wanted to share what I had learned in with as many women as possible in order to help them personally and professionally.

There are way too many beauty choices, tricks and tips, and not enough truth. So many women don’t have the benefit of 16 years in the beauty industry and truly do not know where to start. There are so many mixed messages and marketing images that brainwash women into thinking they are making the best choices. The reality is that I am one of the pickiest women I know…I’m a skeptic…but it’s all born from the quest to find information and the truth. I’m the friend that all my other friends have come to for any beauty advice they need because they know I will give it to them straight. During my time as an educator for major beauty brands, I dedicated myself to becoming a “walking cosmetic ingredient dictionary” ….I know will work and what will not. I have learned what is harmful and what isn’t.

Page 12: NCMAG

12 | ncgmagonline.com

And so I thought what if I could filter the in-formation for the everyday woman and choose only the best of the best? All the things I that I loved, had knowledge and resources for, like makeup, skincare, wellness, cosmetic physicians, spas, salons, etc. and combine them with all the top places in Atlanta that I loved to shop, eat and hang out at… I knew that other women wanted to know these things….and so I set out to develop a business where I could combine all my experiences, skills, passions and partners. So, I asked myself, what do women want? And the name was born. The saying goes…do what you know…do what you love. And that what’s I am doing.

WHAT DO WOMEN WANT?One word: Everything…the absolute best of ev-erything more specifically. Each woman has her own definition of what is fun or meaningful is, so that is why I will always strive to bring women a diverse range of events and seminars. Our time is very limited these days, so I want women to feel confident that they are making a that will showcase only the best, provide impactful infor-mation or connections and

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF STARTING YOUR BUSINESS? Patience. I have big plans. I am a visionary. I want it all, right now. As a start-up, not immediate-ly having everything I want or need to take my business zero to sixty has been challenging. But with a lot of creativity, resources and fortitude, so many positive things have happened! The strides that I’ve made this year are tremendous.

WOMEN’SNETWORK

Page 13: NCMAG

ncgmagonline.com | 13

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MILESTONES YOU HAVE ACHIEVED IN THE PAST YEAR? I am excited to have produced an amazing fashion show for an incredibly talented client and friend of mine, as well as getting my women’s network-

ing concept, Woman2Woman: Networking for Modern Women off the ground. The feedback has been phenomenal and 2010 will be a stellar year for What

Women Want.

WE HEAR YOU HAVE PUT ON SOME AMAZING NETWORKING EVENTS, WHATS NEXT FOR W.W.W.?

In addition to producing an upcoming event with Modern Atlan-ta, Design within Reach and Michael Habachy on June 4th, I

am working on a series of eco-beauty, fashion and eco-lifestyle events and workshops. I am very passionate

about living green through nutritional choices and us-ing green beauty products. These events will provide women and men with vital information on how mak-ing simple daily eco-friendly choices can make an impact their lives, the lives of their family and the environment

HOW DO YOU SEE NETWORKING CHANGING IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS?

It’s just not enough to host a regular network-ing event these days. Specializing is the name of

game in a world where everyone is having a network-ing event. Everyone is so busy these days and pro-

fessionals what to know that when they take time out to attend an event, that there will be an audience for their ser-

vices. More and more, it will become the responsibility of the host to get the right professionals there to ensure that everyone is making

valuable connections.

Page 14: NCMAG

14 | ncgmagonline.com14 | ncgmagonline.com

HOW HAS THE SOCIAL NETWORK-ING PLATFORM AFFECTED YOUR BUSINESS? I think a lot of businesses may under estimate the value of social network-ing sites. I fully believe in the power of these sites to get the social expo-sure and connections that are so critical these days. To a business, it’s a valuable platform to stay in touch with people that want to hear from them. You can’t put a price on that. Without social net-working, What Women Want wouldn’t be where it is today.

Where else can you instantly update your clients and prospective clients in real time on your accomplishments and offerings? Where else can you upload pictures from a makeover, hair service, an event, an article, link to a blog or any other item your business wants to showcase or promote? It’s a brilliant marketing tool.

By no means are these sites a substi-tute for a total marketing plan, they should be used as a part of a well-planned, comprehensive marketing plan.

And when consulting with my clients, if they don’t have a social networking page, that’s first thing I recommend we tackle because it’s easy and simple. I manage many of the social sites for my clients and they are always amazed by the results. For example, when my clients begin track-ing their marketing efforts, many realize that the new customers are originating from a promotional post, event invitation or direct referral from a friend on one of these social sites.

FINALLY, TO JOIN YOUR NETWORK OF FABULOUS WOMEN OR BECOME A SPONSOR AT ONE OF YOUR EVENTS, WHAT WOULD ONE HAVE TO DO? It’s simple…reach out to us. We always want to connect with people and other businesses that are making a difference in lives of women.

Please leave our readers with a word of inspiration.Know what it is that you want and know how to change it once you get there.

In light of Mother’s Day, send a message to your three boys. The hope that I have for my boys is that they grow up to be good men and are good to the women that they chose to be in their lives.

Your resume is extensive and impressive; please tell our readers some of the proj-ects that you have worked on?Worked with Alicia Keys on numerous oc-casions, Mary J. Blige and Reebok deal and most recently Ryan Leslie and Lexus giving the him his first national advertisement for the launch of the new Lexus GX 460

What advice would you give to a young woman looking to work in your field?Do your research. I fell into this job and I do not have any formal training and I didn’t go to school for it but I did my research. So, when someone wanted to challenge me on something I made sure that I knew exactly what I was talking about.

What is the most rewarding part of your occupation?Client satisfaction!

What trends to see happening in your industry, and what are some of the changes would you like to see?I would like to see more of an emphasis multi-cultural agencies in the industry. There should be more opportunity given to these agencies and there are companies out there that un-derstand how important it is to directly speak with these consumers.

How has social networking affected your field?Tremendously, I see social media coming to the forefront of advertising and marketing. I’ve seen a huge increase in company adver-tising and marketing budgets for it a growth spurt from 5% to 30%.

EMs. Monáe took center stage and the crowd was catapulted ‘into an alter-nate universe.’ Heads were bopping to her first single to be released off the album entitled ‘Tightrope’ featuring none other than Big Boi famed group Outkast. Ms. Monáe danced while others attempted to emulate her style. It was an exciting display. After an amazing showcase of her talent, Ms. Monáe paused for questions. When asked about being signed by Sean Combs’ Bad Boy label she simply replied,

“…For those of you who know or have been fol-lowing me know that I have my own recording label [The Wondaland Art Society]. It is a partnership between Sean Combs and

Janelle Monáe and The Wondaland Art Society… people believe in catego-ries I don’t! I think that Sean Combs was very smart to help put this out. I think he believes in this music.”

The crowd was began to dismantle, but only to be dazzled once more with a full concert and performance later on that evening. Janelle Monáe is a breath of fresh air for the mu-sic industry and we welcome her with open arms.

NCMAG was in attendance at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel in Atlanta, GA to wit-ness the unique flare of the

beautiful Janelle Monáe, at a listening party hosted by Are

You In? Inc. As fans await the much anticipated release

of her latest project “The Anchandroid” due

out on May 18th, we were dazzled by her soul piercing

vocals, thought provoking lyrics, and funky beats.

COVERSTORY

With Mother’s Day fast approaching and as businesses brace themselves for one of the most profitable and busiest days of the year. I am compelled to shed some light on the one thing that I feel is often overlooked. A Mother’s Heart. A Mother’s heart requires her to sac-rifice for her child’s sake; it sets the tempo of life with every beat long before the child is born. See, I believe that it is the core of a woman that makes her equip to be a Mother. Being a Mother requires much and should not be taken lightly. To have a profound effect on another person’s life let alone giving life takes considerable consideration.

The true definition of a Mother’s heart cannot be determined by mere words. But, if I were to try and sum it up in 5 simple ways I would list them as such:o Loving o Understandingo Courageouso Nurturero Protector

Page 33: NCMAG

ncgmagonline.com | 33

Page 34: NCMAG

34 | ncgmagonline.com

Over the years, I’ve met many men and women who lack a healthy relationship with their Mother and I have always felt that these individuals had a dis-advantage and I felt even more fortunate to have my Mother. Not because I had the perfect up-bringing but because I had some-one there who cared enough to make sure that I knew I mattered. This not a testimony to my vi-sions of grander for my Mother, but rather the vision I have be-cause I had my Mother. For those of you who are fortunate enough to be able to share my sentiment I applaud your Mother, we are the lucky ones.

For those of you who were not so fortunate I will say this, do not harbor hate or resentment

towards your Mother. Because your Mother was not there for you in the capacity that she should

This NoT a TesTimoNy To my

have been; it does not mean that her heart wasn’t in the right place. Sometimes no matter how much a woman loves her child(ren) and desires to do what is right, she can be incapable of having enough strength to do what is expected of her. Forgive her so that you can fo-cus the love and compassion you have in your heart on your child.

This Mother’s Day do something different for your Mother by checking a few items off of her bucket list, or simply offer your forgiveness if necessary, free your heart. And remember there are others who have taken on the role of loving, understanding, courageous, nurturing, protectors. These are the Surrogate Mothers, Grandmothers, Fathers, Aunt’s, Cousin’s, Friends, Foster Mother’s and others who have stepped in to ensure the comfort and safety of our children. These people are the unacknowledged hero’s. Anyone who would step into the most challenging role in the world

for no pay and sometimes little respect should be honored and commended.

A Mother's heart gives many things and sacrifices much. As a young girl I did not understand the sacrifices my Mother made for me and my siblings. But as a Mother of two boys, I couldn’t understand more, and I love my Mother even more because I un-derstand what it takes to do what you have to do to make sure your children are taken care of. I am extremely grateful for my Mother and if I could give her the world I wouldn’t because she would give it right back with the moon and stars attached. So to all the Moth-er’s in the world who sacrifice for your child(ren) just know without a doubt that you are loved and appreciated more than you could ever know.

Happy Mother’s Day to you all! I HEART my Mother…Neko Cheri

it is that time of year. Yes, love is in the air! The sun is shining, flowers are blooming, birds are tweeting, couples are walking hand-in-hand and you are just seething with envy. Did i call it right? i know, i know, i know honey, if you hear one more love song your gag reflex will activate! No worries “Sweetie,” together, we will figure out how to get a little love into your life too.

By: Chilone Barbarino Payton First and foremost, do not be embarrassed about the lack of attention, affection, and love in your life. Please do not lis-ten to that hardcore, self-righteous, speech from your bitter friends and relatives that always includes the “I don’t need a man” mantra. Yes you do need a man and they probably do too. Perhaps, they would be happier people, if they too, where getting a little lovin’, touchin’ and squeezin’. Honey, don’t you know that misery loves company. Trust me, this is not the kind of company that will buy you din-ner and give you a toe-curling kiss on your doorstep at the conclusion of the evening. So do not pay attention to your embittered female buds. Spring is traditionally a time for renewal. It is another season and another chance for all things new. For you that means you have a whole new opportunity to develop new contacts and associations that can lead to a fabulous Christmas gift in December. Yay, gifts! Yes, my wellheeled glamorous gal pals, think ahead, as it is rare that life, even your romantic life, does not call for a little agenda plan-ning. Please, “Love,” do not be so naïve. This spring, you shall be filled with hope and opportunity! After all, if man does not have something to look forward to, than what is the point?

RELATIONSHIP

Page 45: NCMAG

ncgmagonline.com | 45

Okay, plain and simple, you need a plan. This is what I want you to do; take every opportu-nity to be seen. Dig up your dusty roller blades and go for a whirl. However, do not and I repeat do not go for a whirl in your ratty ol’ sweats and tat-tered “T!” Get armored with a fabulously appropriate outfit and then strut, or I guess the right terminology would be, roll your stuff. Or how about this one; go to one of those lo-cal trendy bookstores, pick a book, an optimal plushy seat, slide right into it and cross your luscious gams and wait for the hotties or to come. Well, I can’t promise hotties, but I can promise spectators, but hey, utilize the guppies as practice to sharpen your skills and con-fidence. And don’t forget Hap-py Hour at the local swanky upscale restaurant, you never know who you will bump into. What I am trying to say is, uti-lize any opportunity to show-case who you are, your fun spirit (and yes, you have one) and have a great time!

Page 46: NCMAG

of you, your soon to be tightened and toned tushy, out there. Go mingle, tell silly corny jokes, sing karaoke, bowl, dance, and laugh and all the while look fabulous while doing it. I am tell-ing you to live and love life, have a positive attitude, speak positive things and before you know it, your old spring will be back in your sexy little walk and your confidence will exude form every pore. Confidence and a positive attitude are better than any makeup; these 2 traits are positively intoxicating and wear well on every-one. This and your sparkling person-ality is what will draw the men. So armor yourself with all these things and I promise the men will flock like a bees to your honey! I know what I am talking about; I would never steer you wrong.

Please understand that we all have had lull-time. Dare I say it, yes, even I, have had lull-time. After a few lonely nights and days (Okay, maybe 2 months of loneliness at the most), I got tired of dinner for one, bitching and moaning to my BF and the pathetic “self love” sessions. Damn it, I said no more! I began to remember my powers. I am a woman, with a great sense of style, humor and personality. I began to put these things to work for me again. Hell, I figured the fruit was ripe for the pickin’, so I went about finding a mar-ket. And trust me, girlfriend, there is always a buyer. I am not saying that this is not scary, because I know that it is, but the fear of the unknown is al-ways scary. However, so is boredom and loneliness.

The real key to achieving anything in life, including the quest for love, is to embrace the challenge. Remember, no good thing comes to those that do nothing. So, do something! Get your tightened and toned tushy, or for some

every achievement in my field is important to me be-cause i value perpetual education in our practice. i believe my most distinguished achievement is Fellow to the Academy of comprehensive esthetics (Ace). There are only three Fellows in the State of Georgia where i practice, and my partner, Dr. Peter boulden, and i are two of them. A Fellow to Ace integrates many years of experience and smile design expertise with my dedication to continuing education and stay-ing at the top of my field of cosmetic dentistry. To be-come a Fellow, a dentist is rigorously tested through a demanding written test, clinical trials and a presenta-tion in front of the top cosmetic dentists in the country. To receive this distinction confirms that I am qualified to practice at the highest level in my field. My first award was won in Dental School where i received the top honor for Aesthetic Dentistry. From my first award to my most recent achievement, i constantly strive to stay ranked in the top 1% of my field.

Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we place a concentrated focus on the health of the mouth. What medical science has confirmed is that having gingivitis and other oral infections can be detrimental to your overall health and put you at risk for serious diseases such as car-diovascular disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s just to name a few. As a dentist, I’m equipped with the knowledge to educate my patients about their systemic health in relation to the health of their teeth and gums. I call it the “body-mouth connection”, and consider it my calling to do everything in my power to treat patients proac-tively so they are healthy from the inside out. Atlanta Dental Spa has put together a program that engages area physicians and specialists to communicate in an open forum about our mu-tual patients so we can be preventative in our treatment plans. This is important, and i’m not being too dramatic when i tell you it will save lives. we can do oral DnA testing now that makes a patient aware of illness before bigger symptoms develop in the later stages of a disease. The body-mouth con-nection is more than a concept, it is a way to offer better healthcare. Preventative screening that we can perform during your dental check up may just be the one thing that indicates the possibility of a slient kill-er, for example, a heart attack.

The smiles give these people a new-found confidence, and improve their lives. How nice that i get to lead that process! every day, i wake up exhilarated to go to work and continue offering my patients the level of treatment available in the top 1% of dentistry in the country. At the time, i wanted to be a biomedical engineer, but started to get lost in the math. when i stepped back to evaluate what i wanted for my future, i thought about my love for biology and helping people. Den-tistry was a perfect match. i also wanted to be a mom, because that’s the most important job i’ll ever have. being a dentist allows me the opportunity to provide superior healthcare and still have time to be with my children. Thank goodness for calculus 5!our practice covers general and cosmetic dentistry – everything from smile makeovers and full mouth

DenTAl SPA?They love our team. our patients love the way we continue to serve them and surprise them with our beautiful work. We give them first class customer ser-vice in a world-class environment because they de-serve the best healthcare we can provide. we break the paradigm of the scary old-school dentist. The health of your mouth is so important, and we want pa-tients to feel comfortable and receive treatment with-out anxiety. our team is hand selected for their talents in total customer care and their passion for dentistry. we wanted people who are as enthusiastic as we (Dr. boulden and i) are about healthcare. So, every person at Atlanta Dental Spa shares our excitement and our vision.

A DeNTAL SpA IS A veRY, UNIqUe CoN-CepT; hoW DID YoU CoMe Up WITh The iDeA?

When I interviewed for my first associate job out of dental school, my mentor (who was interview-ing me at the time), asked me to close my eyes and picture my own practice in ten years. When I did close my eyes, I envisioned a place I would want to walk into and be taken care of. Because people have old fears of the dentist, I wanted the environment to be warm, serene and inviting – like a spa. So, when I did get to build my prac-tice with Dr. Boulden, we shared that concept and kept that vision in the forefront, building our team and environment around that model. We thought, “what if you actually liked going to

the dentist?” And now, our patients are happy to visit us. Instead of fear, they have a peaceful, relaxing respite in an otherwise hectic day. They can get that spa feeling while receiving dental treatment. It’s the very best in multi-tasking!

Spring has officially arrived and it’s time to step your shoe game up. Put away the knee high boots and let your little piggy’s get some sunshine with this season’s hottest sandals. Whether you want to go high or low, there is a hot sandal for everywoman, every occasion, and at every price range. Now, most of us will hit the mall and shop at our favorite local boutique for all of the fantastic pieces of art work called platform peep toe gladiators. But for those of us who don’t have the time to go out and indulge in retail shoe therapy because we are stuck in the office in front of a computer, there is online shopping! There are hundreds of websites that cater to our shoe cravings. Online shopping is also great for getting your hands on those styles that are hard to find in stores, and allows you to pick a pair that you won’t see every other woman wearing. What’s the best thing about online shoe shopping? Price comparison! You can still use pricegrabber.com and other price comparison tools to find the best deal for you. Which of course is better than going from store to store or worse finding a sale after you already paid full price. NOT! Shop until you drop ladies and don’t forget to pick a matching pair for your Mom, as Mother’s Day is right around the corner - share the gift of shoes. Happy Shop-ping Ladies!

• Number one common misperception would have to be that people think I’m a profession-al athlete!

• Traveling, watching & playing Basketball and Bass fishing

• I have a national commercial for Starkist Tuna airing currently and I’m also working on a recurring role on Telemundo Network (Spanish tv) as a LAPD Detective on the soap opera called DONDE ESTA ELISA

• Future goals & aspirations would be to just continue to move forward in the right direc-tion not only professionally put personally. Continue to work on my craft as an actor and hopefully one day make that leap of faith and head out west to los angeles!

• Qualities that I find appealing in a wom-en......first and foremost, a love a women that carrys herself like A WOMEN! Some-one who’s kind, considerate....the kind of women that walks into a room and all the men wish they could be with her and all the women wish they could be like her! Some-one that I couldn’t wait to take home to meet my mother!

• My mom is a southern lady so MANNERS were extremely important in our household! I remember as a kid her telling my brother & I how important a person’s “image” was. Taking pride in our appearance was some-thing she instilled in us! And being respon-sible that was another great value she would remind us about....to be responsible!
