Tucker participated in a ropes course and rode the zesty zip line. He challenged his fellow campers in rifle, shotgun and archery competitions, doing well but not boasting of being the “top

Taking the Texas hunter safety course was recreation for Tucker, who

He did what most boys in West Texas would consider a hunting experience of a lifetime, namely, hunting trophy fallow deer. 2009 Leopard hunt with Sumsare Safaris

The Hunt of a Lifetime!

As the purchaser of last year’s leopard hunt with Sumsare Safaris and Gerard Erasmus, I got my “Bang for the Buck”, or cat in this case! Sumsare leads the

hunting industry in preparation prior to your arrival ensuring greater success for your hunt. I can attest to this personally as I was able to take a cat with hounds on the first morning hunting the beautiful creature. Gerard and his team mapped out the pattern and territory of the leopard they planned for me to hunt. They had been scouting this particular animal for two months prior to my arrival so I would have the best opportunity

possible. The hound master released the hounds at 7:15am and the hounds were on the leopards’ tracks by 7:35am and the hunt was on! We trailed the leopard through the rocky mountain terrain for several hours until the hounds bayed the leopard in a cave. Gerard and his team coached me on my position and we were able to send the dogs in after the very angry cat! The hard work paid off as we were positioned perfectly and able to get a broad side shot as the leopard was pushed from the cave by the hounds. This hunt was extremely rewarding for both me and Sumsare Safaris. It is truly a pleasure to hunt with Gerard and the Sumsare team because of their service and dedication to hunting success.

The July 12-14, 2009 Red Fishing trip for eleven of Hendrick Home for Children’s greatest outdoor pleasure seeking children ended up being a reverse of luck. Last year, the Home took five boat loads of children anglers and their

adult-per-boat chaperones on a Red Fishing adventure that ran smack into the face winds of Hurricane Dolly. Five fish were caught that day and the second day was spent looking out

the hotel windows, amazed at what turbulent wind and pounding rain will do to the ocean’s surf and flexible palm trees. The children learned from fishing experience that Reds don’t bite well the day before a hurricane and that fishing is impossible during a hurricane.

The number 13 must be a lucky fishing number for our children. On July 13, we took three boats with 13 children and their house parents to the shallow waters of Rock Port Bay. We fished all morning long, faithfully for the first hour, yet without a catch. The most excitement came from children who unintentionally thought they had a catch while dragging in heavy bait. As the sun progressed, the fishing didn’t, but the guide kept telling the kids to wait until mid-morning, “That’s when they’ll start biting,” he said. The first clue to our upcoming fishing success came when our guide received a mobile call from another guide. Up anchor and we were gone!

After meeting up with our other two boats, we started catching Reds as fast as we could bring them in. Within the hour, our children

had limited out on Reds and one fish in our boat was large enough to require a tag. It was more than half the length of the little girl who caught it. In all, our kids caught 232 pounds of filleted Red Fish, enough to feed 50 other kids and supervisors, several meals.

Was it the number 13 or was it the good guides and anglers that brought the luck, or maybe all three? Either way, God smiled on us that day…and we smiled with Him.

The Sportsmen’s Club of Fort Worth teamed with Camp John Marc in 2009 to build the camp a new fishing pier. CJM, which serves children with chronic illnesses and special needs from the DFW area, has had a fishing program on site since the camp was founded in 1991. The original fishing pier, which was falling into disrepair, was in dire need of an overhaul. Thanks to a generous gift from the Sportsmen’s Club, Camp John Marc completed construction of a new pier in May 2009—just in time for the summer camp season. The new pier features Trex-decking (that does not splinter), more shade, a “fishing hole” in the middle, stainless steel countertops for baiting and rigging and an

uninterrupted 360° view of the camp and lake. Increased accessibility is the greatest accomplishment of the new pier. Now, 25% of the pier’s railing can be lowered with a unique gate system. Children using wheelchairs have the ability to see right down to their bobber. When not needed for accessibility, the railing is simply raised back up to a safe height. After the project was

completed, the Sportsmen’s Club even went the extra mile and helped to outfit and stock the new pier with tackle and fishing supplies. The quality of the camp and its fishing program have been superbly enhanced by this new facility and Camp John Marc is grateful for the Sportsmen’s Club’s long history of support.

Each year brings some new faces to Foster’s Home for Children. These new kids join scores of others who have

been here a few months or many years. They all have one thing in common: they have had a very fractured and

disappointing childhood.

To offset their bleak background and to build good memories that will last a lifetime, the Sportsmen’s Club of Fort

Worth invested in their summer activities. For several years, our children have been extremely blessed by your

generosity. More than that, they have enjoyed memories they otherwise never would have made.

This past summer several different children’s homes went on guided fishing trips. One group went to Lake

Granbury and two others went to the Texas gulf coast, staying at Surfside. For many of the kids it was their first

experience to deep sea fish. They had never been out in the ocean, especially far enough out that they couldn’t

see land. They thought it was cool! The waves were huge and overwhelming. They shared the customary motion

sickness but that didn’t dampen their trip. They caught 6’ bonnethead sharks as well as red drum. The kids would

be so exhausted after reeling in fish that they had to rest before fishing some more. Best of all, after they returned

to Stephenville, they got to enjoy the fruits of their labors. They cooked their shark fillets and said they tasted

awesome. Fish always tastes better when it is one you caught!

Quite the opposite, 10 of our children went in a different direction from sea level. They sumitted at over 14,000

feet on peaks near Salida, Colorado. They enjoyed using camping gear supplied by the members of the Sportsmen’s

Club. Over several years we have been able to outfit our kids with hiking shoes, tents, and the special equipment

needed for trips such as these. Not only were the mountains beautiful but the kids learned trust, teamwork and

the joy of accomplishing a goal. Lessons like these last a lifetime.

Aside from the great extended out-of-town trips were the numerous trips to local state parks made possible by

the purchase of group passes. This gift keeps on giving, as the passes are valid for a year and our numerous homes

get to enjoy the beauty our state parks offer.

Whether it was the thrill of catching their first fish, the wide-eyed response to the vastness of the ocean or the

breathtaking beauty of climbing peaks few have climbed, the children at Foster’s Home in Stephenville were

forever changed by the opportunities afforded them by this Club. We want to express our appreciation and joy

at being selected as one of your grant recipients. You brought joy to children and I hope you find satisfaction in

their joy.

My name is Todd Baker and I have been involved with the Palo Pinto County Youth Hunt for the past 18 years. We take 15 kids, between the ages of 12 and 16 years old, who do not have the opportunity to hunt. We meet the kids at a designated location at 9:00am on a Saturday morning then leave from that location and go to a firing range. There, each child receives instruction about the firearm they will be using and how to get the proper sight picture and safety precautions. They each get to shoot at targets to get them comfortable with shooting. We then leave the firing range and go to camp and eat lunch which is prepared by chuck wagon cooks. After lunch everyone gets their cots and bedding ready for the night. At 3:00pm everyone is dropped off at the blinds to hunt until dark. When everyone is picked up and the animals have been field dressed, we go back to camp and eat dinner. After dinner we have some sort of entertainment for the kids. In past years we have had cowboy poets or storytellers. After the entertainment each child is presented with a certificate, flashlight and camo cap with Palo Pinto County Youth Hunt and the year on it. At 5:00am on Sunday everyone is awakened for breakfast and then taken to the blinds for the morning hunt. At 9:00am everyone is picked up from the blinds and proceed to field dress the animals. We then go back and break camp. The kids then go back to meet with their parents. The animals are sent to the processing plant and when finished, the meat is divided equally between the 15 participants and delivered to their residence. We have also added a youth dove hunt that has been a great success. This is our second year this event where we take 10 kids for a one-day dove hunt. We meet at 9:00 am and set off the kids to a skeet range and teach them gun safety. We show them how to properly operate a pump shotgun shoot birds. We usually spend 4 to 5 hours on the skeet range to ensure that they are comfortable following through with their shots and the operation of the shotgun. We then go to the field around 3:00pm for the evening hunt.

This is a brief overview of what we do for the kids that we are able to take on the Youth Hunt. We have had great success and feedback from the kids and their families. This program has been made possible through many volunteers donating their time and money out of their own pocket as well as donations from fund raisers and other sources. Every year we have many repairs on blinds and feeders which is not easy to budget for. Again on behalf of everyone in our organization and the youth in our county, we would like to thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Todd Baker
