The NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI) is excited to be partnering with the NC Department of Health and Human Ser-vices (DHHS) to make the certification training for Youth Mental Health First Aid instructors available to school personnel in order to support having school district personnel, such as school counselors, school psychologists, social workers, etc., trained to be certified Youth Mental Health First Aid instructors to increase district capacity to have staff trained in Youth Mental Health First Aid.

Training costs will be covered by NC DHHS and NC DPI (travel expenses will be the responsibility of individuals or their dis-tricts). There will be two instructor train-ings to choose from this coming summer, one July 17—21 and another August 7—11. Participants do have to attend all five days.

This will be an excellent opportunity for school counseling leaders to be trained for leadership, advocacy and collaboration in their districts and regions in support of student needs. As you probably already well know, men-tal health needs in our schools are often a barrier to student learning and success. Many school personnel do not feel ade-quately prepared to recognize and re-spond to these mental health needs.

School counselors typically receive train-ing on this in their graduate programs, but other school personnel do not. Survey for Your Feedback Coming Monday!

The NC School Counseling Strategic Leadership Team has been working hard to develop strategies and rec-ommendations to support your work, especially in the areas of K-12 career and college readiness. Many school counselors report that they do not feel adequately prepared to guide elementary students in career and college awareness or advise middle and high school students on how to prepare for career and college be-

yond high school. As we seek to try to address this need, your input is essential.

The survey link will be released to the NCDPI School Counseling listserv Monday, March 6th, and will need to be completed no later than March 16th. This information will guide us in developing appropriate professional development opportunities to assist you in creating school cultures that

support student career and college readiness K-12.

School Counselor March MTSS Update

MTSS is designed to be a team approach to supporting student and school success, shared appropriately across the school staff. The NCDPI Integrated Academic and Behavior System (IABS) Division is supporting school counselors with their understanding of MTSS through monthly updates in the NCDPI School Counseling listserv newsletter. Below is the update for this month.

With the School Counselor having a focus on leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, it is important that this staff member to have an understand-ing of the MTSS teaming structures. NC DPI is modeling a cascading sys-tem of support for sustainable im-plementation of this school improve-ment framework from the state level to the individual student. This frame-work includes state, district and school teams which use problem

solving throughout implementation.

The school team uses a problem-solving process for continuous school improvement. One of the key re-sponsibilities of this team is examin-ing effectiveness of all tiers of aca-demic and behavioral instruction. The team is also charged with keep-ing track of whether the actions are yielding engagement and results for students (implementation data). When the implementation data re-veal otherwise, this team functions to problem solve and remove barri-ers to ensure continuous school im-provement. The team recommends and plans professional development based on school-wide, grade-level or subject area data. The School Leader-ship Team problem solves school-wide data and supports grade level or departmental level PLCs to exam-

ine their data, problem solve and conduct implementation planning. In summary, this School Leadership Team will plan strategically for MTSS implementation and engage with staff in ongoing professional develop-ment and coaching around MTSS. The counselor has the opportunity to contribute to the strategic, systemic and actionable and implementation plan.

The State legislators are back in long-session this year and have been busy with discussing and filing bills. Of course, some of these pertain to education, such as House Bill (HB) 13 Class Size Requirement Changes and HB 6 Education Finance

Reform Task Force. If you would like to stay informed on updates related to education, you can find them on the NC Public Schools Legislative Updates web page. You can also get to the Legislative Updates page by going to the NC Public Schools

Catawba College launched a new en-trepreneurial program that includes the new Center for Entrepreneurship and Experiential Development (CEED) in the Ralph W. Ketner School of Busi-ness.

CEED has many elements. At its foun-dation are its educational components, driven first and foremost by the intro-duction of both a Concentration within the BS Business Administration pro-gram along with a Minor for all stu-dents. Four Core courses and Five Elec-tive courses on Entrepreneurship make up the initial curriculum that began the 2016 – 2017 academic year.

In addition to these exciting degree options, CEED is also holding Entrepre-neurship Workshops open to the entire Catawba community and feature topics from Business Planning to Funding to Making the Pitch.

In addition to the educational aspects, CEED offers both a business incubator (CEED Venture Program) and a busi-ness accelerator (CEED Catapult). Stu-dents who have business ideas are able to apply for acceptance into these pro-grams and get important help in devel-oping and launching them. “You never know where the next great business idea will come from, so why not here?”

says Ketner School of Business Dean Jay Abraham. “Even if we don’t find the next Facebook, the learning experi-ence for our students will be incredible and will help them in their future busi-ness careers regardless of the size of the ultimate organization they join.”

New Program at Catawba College

Free High School Courses at NCSSM

NCSSM (NC School of Science and Mathematics) is a statewide leader in interactive video conferencing and offers tuition-free high school courses. NCSSM’s live, two-way videoconferencing sessions allow students from across North Carolina to

engage with NCSSM instructors and other class participants, wherever they are, in real time.

These tuition-free courses can be accessed with minimal equipment including a computer, webcam, and software

that costs the partnering school less than $200.

Courses available through the IVC Program include:

Honors Genetics and Biotechnology Honors Forensic Science: Anthropology

Trainings on College Application Residency Determination Service (RDS)

Trainings are being scheduled around the state for the upcoming Residency Determination Service (RDS) that high school seniors will have to complete with their college applications in order to obtain a Residency Determination Number (RDN) to determine NC residency. As students transition into a college or university, the RDN will be required for in-state tuition

and/or state grant eligibility determination. The following are sessions scheduled thus far:

Paid Summer Internships for High School Counselors

The North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA) will again sponsor a paid summer internship program for school counselors in college financial aid offices across the state. Internships of four, five or six weeks in length are available

and designed to give counselors a better understanding of the financial aid process in order to promote access to higher education among North Carolina students. One six-week internship is also available at the NC State Education Assistance

Authority. Counselors earn $700 per 30 hour week.

Applications, criteria, details of the program and a list of participating financial aid offices are available on the

2017 Summer Internship web page. The application deadline is Friday, April 7, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

NC School Counselor Legislative Day March 14th

This is your opportunity to talk to your legislators about the responsibilities and needs of school counseling in supporting students. NCSCA host this annual event at our state capital. The day typically starts with a school counselors meeting with

NCSCA and its lobbyist before school counselors head to the legislator offices to talk with senators and representatives.

Free Bullying-Prevention Assembly with Lizzie Sider at Your School

This school year, we have been fortunate to learn more about 18-year-old country music artist Lizzie Sider's free Nobody Has the Power to Ruin Your Day bullying prevention curriculum

and initiatives. Information was included in the October and January NCDPI school

counseling newsletters and Lizzie joined North Carolina school counselors for a webinar on bullying prevention in December. Part of her Nobody Has the Power to Ruin Your

Day bullying prevention initiative includes visiting schools to talk with students and engage them in a live anti-bullying music performance, which she has done in over

350 schools nationwide. In her travels up and down the east coast, Lizzie has offered to include some North Carolina schools in her visits in April and May at no

cost to you. If you are interested in having Lizzie visit and perform at your school or district, contact her

Hosted by the Department of Counseling and Educational Development at UNC Greensboro

Crises occur when the pain and distress of a situation overwhelm an individual’s ability to cope. For those in their teen and early adult years, crises may reflect a time of normative transition, individuation, and striving for self-identity. Crises

potentiated by past traumas may further complicate these struggles for those living in abusive or neglectful environments or transitioning out of the foster care system. Crisis management skills are essential for any counselor

working with adolescents and young adults in clinical mental health or school settings. Through this webinar, participants will learn approaches and skills to help teens and young adults navigate some of life’s most difficult

transitions. The presenter will explore the roles of attachment and coping in crisis management and resolution and teach evidence-based crisis intervention skills, including grounding techniques, emotion regulation, and crisis

assessment. Elements of Psychological First Aid (PFA) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) will be incorporated to

help counselors intervene in informed and client-centered ways.

2017 NCACTE Guidance and Career Development Division Scholarship

The purpose of the NCACTE Guidance and Career Development Division Scholarship is to assist the recipient during his/her higher education by subsidizing the cost of attending a community college or university. The scholarship is available on a

competitive basis to graduating high school students who have taken Career and Technical Education courses and achieved the
