Co-host of the 2011 NCAA Division III Softball Championship finals
OLD DOMINION ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
Currently celebrating its 35th year of opera-
tion, the Old Dominion Athletic Confer-
ence (ODAC) is one of the nation’s largest
Division III conferences. The 14-member ODAC,
including Catholic U niversity’s associate status,
stands as the second-largest multi-spor t NCAA
Division III conference in the country.
The league was formed May 18, 1975, as the
Virginia College Conference and began operations
in September 1976. (The name change to ODAC
became effective January 1, 1976.) Charter mem-
bers were eight colleges located in the state of
Virginia: Bridgewater College (Virginia), Eastern
Mennonite University, Emory and Henry College,
Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College,
Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and
Washington and Lee University.
From its initial year of operation through the
1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored
competition in 10 men’s varsity sports, including
football, soccer and cross country in the fall; basket-
ball, wrestling, and indoor track and field in the
winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and outdoor track
and field in the spring. Women’s sports were added
before the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC
has grown to sponsor championships in 22 sports.
The conference expanded in the late 1980s, early
1990s, and most recently in 1999. Virginia Wes-
leyan College became the 13th ODAC member in
1988 and began full-scale competition in the league
in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College,
voted into the conference in the spring of 1990,
began competing for conference championships in
the 1991-92 season. Catholic University was
accepted for football-only membership by the
league in January 1999 and won the conference
championship that fall.
In the past 19 years, the conference and the city of
Salem, Virginia, have gained national attention
through hosting Division III championships in foot-
ball, men’s basketball, baseball, softball, women’s
lacrosse and women’s volleyball. The 1993 Division
III Football Championship was the first title passed
out in Salem. That event marked the first of more than
60 NCAA championships awarded in Salem to date.
Lisa Lee helped lead Eastern Mennonite Uni-versity to its second ODAC softball title in2010. The Royals won the league’s inauguralcrown in 1990.

As the NCAA’s new president, what are yourpriorities for the organization?Collegiate athletics must r emain an integral
part of higher education. We shouldn’t talk
about athletics and academics as separate
entities but rather as par t of the whole aca-
demic experience. This means focusing on
the holistic development of our student-ath-
letes and making their well-being a top prior-
ity. From a r evenue perspective, we need to
find the right balance of generating the neces-
sary dollars and being diligent about the r ole
commercialism plays. We also must make
sure we spend the dollars for the benefit of
the student-athlete. Finally, we have to rein-
force that fairness and integrity form the
bedrock of the enterprise.
How are student-athletes doing in theclassroom?First, let me say everything we do in intercol-
legiate athletics must be driven by an overrid-
ing commitment to the academic success of
our student-athletes. I n the end, ev eryone
wins if w e educate student-athletes to the
point that they ar e successful in life. With
that, I am happy to report student-athletes do
an outstanding job in the classr oom. For
example, the 2010 D ivision I multiy ear
Academic Performance Rate of 967 is thr ee
points higher than the 2009 figur es.
Statistically, that is an amazing jump and took
“Everything we do in intercollegiate athletics mustbe driven by an overriding commitment to the
academic success of our student-athletes. In theend, everyone wins if we educate student-athletes
to the point that they are successful in life.”
NCAA President Mark A. Emmert assumed his new duties October 1. Before that, he most recent-ly served as the president of the University of Washington. A career educator, the NCAA’s fifthchief executive said protecting the collegiate model of athletics in financially challenging times
and making sure the NCAA is student-centered will be among his immediate areas of focus. He also plansto rely heavily on campus presidential leadership to help him achieve his goals.

a lot of hard work by everyone involved, espe-
cially our student-athletes. It proves how seri-
ously our members take their commitment to
academics. And it is a tribute to my predeces-
sor, Myles Brand, who did so much to change
the culture surrounding the educational
aspects of college sports.
Can you elaborate a little more on the conceptof student-athlete well-being?Student-athlete well-being is at the cor e of
our mission. We are charged to ensur e
intercollegiate athletics is conducted in
ways that protect and enhance the physical,
educational and social characteristics of our
student-athletes. We need to dev elop stu-
dent-athletes for success. We do that b y
helping them earn a worthwhile education,
compete safely, and grow holistically while
on campus.
What are your thoughts on the rising costs ofcollege sports and the role of commercialism? College sports cannot operate without
commercial support. The NCAA has 25
years of data pr oving athletics self-sustain-
ment is vir tually impossible for the v ast
majority of its schools. In fact, only about a
dozen or so D ivision I athletics pr ograms
are self-sustaining. The truth is it is a good
thing to hav e more resources, if y ou are
using them corr ectly. Most athletics busi-
ness plans closely mirr or the business
model of the univ ersity. Every university
seeks to maximize revenue before redistrib-
uting it to support its educational mission.
Putting it all together , we have multiple
challenges. First, we have to make sur e
enough is generated. N ext, we have to
make sure it is used to complement the
overall educational mission of inter colle-
giate athletics. Finally, we need to be mind-
ful of the impact that r evenue generation
can have on competitive equity.
What does the NCAA do with the mone y itgenerates?Approximately 96 per cent of our generated
revenue supports student-athletes thr ough
distributions, programs or championships.
Since signing our ne w media rights contract
with Turner Broadcasting and CBS, w e have
established a committee to review the current
model and make recommended changes.

Honoring exceptional student-athletes
ELITE 88
88Jessica Ubanyionwu is nothing like the car-
icature of a single-minded, focused-on-ath-
letics Division I student- athlete. Invited to
the Division I 2010 I ndoor Track and F ield
Championships (where she placed 16th in the
triple jump), U banyionwu views her athletics
participation as simply a vehicle to get her where
she really wants to go: medical school.
“I’m so into my academics, I try to deal with
the fact that I’m in sports, too,” said the Baylor
student-athlete. “My academics are a big focus
in my life. I’ m not going to go pr o in spor ts.
Academics is my ‘Plan A,’ not sports.”
Ubanyionwu’s dedication to her schoolwor k
and talent in the triple jump combined to earn
her one of the first NCAA E lite 88 A wards.
Created to recognize student-athletes who reach
the national championship in their spor t while
also achieving the highest academic standar d
among their peers, the awards honored 88 indi-
viduals — one at ev ery NCAA championship
— for the first time in 2009-10.
“These exceptional young men and women
come from diverse backgrounds, but they all
have one thing in common: a commitment to
excellence in the classr oom and in competi-
tion,” said Joni Comstock, NCAA senior vice
president for championships.
The Elite 88 Award program worked just as
Erin O’Connell, athletics dir ector at S eattle
Pacific and a member of the committee that
helped create the award, planned — especially
since Seattle Pacific’s Suzie Strickler won the
award at the D ivision II
Women’s Cross Country
Championships.
“She’s a great depiction of
somebody who should be winning the awar d,”
O’Connell said of Strickler. “She’s a very intel-
ligent, driven individual. It’s prestigious for any
institution and individual to win.”
Strickler said her secret to being successful in
academics and athletics is to enjo y what she ’s
doing while she’s doing it.
An exercise science major with a 4.0 grade-
point average, Strickler isn’t sure what she ’s
going to do after graduation, though the med-
ical field appeals to her.
Igor Martinez, a civil engineering major with
a 4.0 GPA at Norwich, isn’t sure what he’s going
to do when he graduates, either . Martinez won
the Elite 88 Award at the Division III Men’s Ice
Hockey Championship.
“I was more shocked than anything else,” he
said. “I didn’t think it would be me.”
Martinez’s secret?
“You can always wor k hard and be serious,”
he said. “But you’ve got to take time to have fun
with your teammates.”
Getting to the championship was an enor-
mous accomplishment, but sharing it with his
teammates was what made it special.
The Elite 88 was a bonus, as it was for most
of the r ecipients in the awar d’s inaugural y ear
who happen to be going pro in something other
than sports.

Pushing further, training harder and achieving more is what the NCAA is all about. At LG, pushing further means never settling for “new” and always pushing on to “improved.” We think beyond engineering to product innovations that make life a little better. That’s why LG supports the efforts of the NCAA.
