ANNUAL Tailgate
Q&A with NC Alumna Sonja Cantor
What year did you graduate from N.C.?
1977
What was the football team’s reputation?
We were pretty good.
What changed about NC since you attended the school?Diversity, which is a good
thing. There are many different kinds of students as
well as more opportunities for them. Also, the school is much
more strict than it use to be. You can’t get away with some
things today that you could when I was in high school.

OUT OFTHE GATEAS THE GAME BEGINS NC KEEPS UP WITH WARRIORSPacked seats, blaring cheers from the crowd and fans decked out in school colors is what a Homecoming football game is all about and this year’s September 14 game was no exception. The stadium was packed with students, alumni, parents and community supporters coming out to support the football team as they played conference rival Warren Central. Although the students usually garner more attention because of their theme of the night, the parents were just as enthusiastic. Running back Jalen McIntyre’s mother Renee McIntyre sat front row ringing her bell, shaking her pon-poms and cheering her son on throughout the game. “I love coming to the games and supporting my son but I do pray for his safety before every game” McIntyre said. Like McIntyre, Julie Rogers, mother of sophomore Jack Rogers came to the game to support her son. “Even though he is not playing right now I love coming out to the games and cheering him on. But since he is just a sophomore I hope that he just keeps developing as a player” Rogers said. Looking up into the parent section one can see from the “that’s my boy” buttons, the school color clothing and the sheer look of pride on the parents faces that the parents were key in this game.

ON THEMARCHGROUPS FROM ALL AROUND THE TOWNSHIP COME TOGETHERThe banner parade during half-time was full of surprises. Students from Hilltop made their first appearance during half-time, along with clubs from Washington Township middle schools, like Northview, Westlane and Eastwood. Fox Hill’s banner turned out to be a fan favorite. “They all looked so cute and I liked how their banner was done in finger paint” senior Leslie Kimbrough said. “At first I couldn’t decide between Fox Hill and Westlane,” Ra’naa Goldman, senior, said, “but Fox Hill took the cake.”

THE OTHER
SIDEA DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE
OF THE GAME THROUGH THE WARREN SIDE
The Warren Central High School Athletic Director, Marques Clayton, played
football, as a defensive back in both high school and college. Prior to being named Warren Central High School’s newest athletic director, Clayton was one of Warren High School’s
football coaches. Warren Central celebrated
their Homecoming two short weeks ago. The school, like
North Central, celebrated with a spirit week where students dressed up according to the
theme of the day. The various themes included superhero, men in black, celebrity look
alike, dress up day, and school colors. The Warren Central
teachers also participated in the excitement. The teachers
had their own themed days which included a high school
flashback day where the teachers wore what they
would have worn during their high school years. Warren Central also held a talent
show, Warren’s Got Talent, and a bonfire during their
Homecoming week. Photo by Bilal Jawed

MARCHING PANTHERSWHILE KEEPING
THE BEAT THE MARCHING BAND
PERFORMS ALL NIGHT LONG
During practice the drum majors honored one player
with some kind of silver lanyard for being a model
marcher. For the Tailgate it played “Eleanor Rigby” and the fi ght song. Every time the players marched, the drummers did a series of
choreographed hops, skips and jumps. It played the “tag” every time the Panthers got
a fi rst down or a touchdown. It also played the “Jaws”
theme song. To the beat of the drums, the players sometimes
chanted things such as “1st and 10, do it again.” The
players talked and goofed with each other. When the opposing team scored the freshmen had to do push-
ups. The seniors had to when NC scored. At half-time, the
band played “Lady Madonna,” “Eleanor Rigby,” and the fi ght
song.

WINDINGDOWNFANS BEGIN TO DISPERSE AS THE NIGHT COMES TO A CLOSEThe student section was filled with juniors who were readily cheering on their NC football team while wearing all black attire. Standing behind the seniors, the juniors represented their class with the occasional class cheer and 2014 chants. Juniors came out to the game to support their panthers and the majority of the juniors believed that the football team had a fair chance at winning. Many juniors wore black and participated in the unofficial school blackout. The blackout allowed for all grades to be unified in cheering their football team. Many of the juniors left before the game was actually over, but some stayed until the very end.
