Issue 3 of the newsletter the community group was working together with Southampton City council opens spaces team to redevelop the old rose garden. This had fallen into a state of neglect and looked unloved. Through a lot of time and hard work, support from the local residents, catch 22 and community payback we have now successfully completed the beautiful picnic area within Portswood recreation ground. This can now be enjoyed by everyone who visits the recreation ground. The community group has now launched a Friends of Portswood Park Group. Some of the aims of this group are to be a community reference group for the development of plans, implementation/ maintenance of improvements, to the park and its play area, also to promote the Park’s use in the community. If you would like to become a member of the Friends of Portswood park group please complete the application form below. All memberships’ fee or donations will go towards helping with activities to improve our local area, newsletter and any bbq/social events to be held. The community group is a constituted non profit organisation funded by donations or grants. Our aims are to enhance the quality of urban life and strengthen community bonds by creating and sustaining community projects that will foster environmental stewardship, horticultural education, rejuvenation, recreation and use of open spaces. Also improving the area we live in and the wider area of Portswood. I/we would like to join membership of the NBSP Community Group & Friends of Portswood Park. The constituted NSBP Community Group will be working to achieve maximum benefits for local residents by creating and sustaining community projects and will feed back regular updates to the local community. We shall be working alongside the City Council and Police with regard to any other projects to improve the area of Portswood. Raf Persaud NBSP Community Group On September 11th 2010 saw the 1st One Big community festival which took place at Portswood recreation ground. More than 5000 people turned up to this spectacular event which was aimed at the different communities and cultures of Portswood and the surrounding areas. Attractions at the event included inflatable football pitch, fire brigade, miniature farm, arts & craft workshops, pony rides, range of statutory & voluntary services from within Southampton, interactive drumming workshops and much more There were also live bands and dance performances all day on the main stage for everyone to enjoy. This ranged from the local DM dance studio, Yi Quin lion dancing and martial art club, The Skore, Hand to mouth theatre, Djembabes The Shimmering Bees, Southampton Ukulele and many more. There was also entertainer around the event such as Stilt walkers, jugglers, The Mad Hatter, ground walkers and balloon modellers. Special quest at the event was children's favourite Peppa Pig. The NBSP Portswood community group would like to say A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who help make this festival a big success and to all those who attended. We look forward to seeing you again in 2011 for the next one big community festival.
