Naturally, everyone wants to be able to predict which horse will win the Kentucky Derby each year. However, only a few people advertised their 2012 Kentucky Derby contenders accurately. While there is no way a single person can be relied upon for this type of ad-vice each year, it is helpful to follow the people that are most likely to define the horses that will be the Kentucky Derby 2013 winners.

Unlikely source of Kentucky Derby predictions
Although it was barely covered in the press, former Thoroughbred Times editor and horse racing picks expert, Ed DeRosa, sided with Kentucky Attorney General, Jack Conway. Conway cor-rectly predicted that I’ll Have Another would win the 2012 Derby and made the announcement on his official Ken-tucky.gov website. He may have just been lucky, but, along with DeRosa, @EJXD2, Conway’s Twitter account, @ConwayforKy, might be one to watch for 2013 Kentucky Derby picks.

media outlets that have account users promising to give the best Kentucky Derby picks. Some of these resources are major news outlets and others are amateur horse racing handicappers that have strong opinions. Interestingly, one pick expert on Twitter delivered exactly what they promised. Before the 2012 Kentucky Derby began, @trifectabox predicted I’ll Have Another would win. John Asher has seen lots of celebri-ties at the Kentucky Derby over the past 30 years, but one of the two big-gest show-stoppers was actor Jack Nicholson in 1998.
“Crowds halted and parted like the Red Sea wherever he went that day,” Asher, vice president of racing com-munications at Churchill Downs, said.
The other was Britain’s Queen Eliz-abeth in 2007. “I think all members of our racetrack team felt that Derby Day was a bit more special than most,” he said. “And that’s saying something.”
But even before the movie star and the queen’s visit, a who’s who of some of the world’s most famous faces has attended the Kentucky Derby.
From Presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford and both George Bushes — to Judy Garland, Babe Ruth and John Wayne — here’s a look back at some of the biggest stars who have been spotted at Churchill on Derby Day.
• J. Edgar Hoover, the first director of the FBI, baseball legend Babe Ruth and boxer Jack Dempsey were both guests at the 1937 Kentucky Derby.
• Pictured wearing flowers in her blond hair, a dark dress and chic black gloves, “Peyton Place” beauty Lana Turner was all smiles at the 1941 Run for the Roses, which she attended with legendary singer Tony Martin.
• “The Wizard of Oz’s” Judy Garland was a guest in 1953. The day before the race, she told a Courier-Journal reporter she hadn’t decided what she was wearing, saying, “By golly, I haven’t thought much about that. If it is a dull, rather cool day, I’ll wear a suit. If it’s nice and bright, I’ll wear a light dress.”
• Just a few months into his first year as president of the United States, Richard Nixon and his wife, Pat, came to the Kentucky Derby in 1969. The couple hung out at Churchill Downs with another famous duo — Ronald and Nancy Reagan.
• In 1976, comedian Bob Hope (who came multiple times) and movie star John Wayne were among the VIPs. Wayne was also the Pegasus Parade grand marshal that year.
• Former President Gerald Ford was a guest in 1987.
• A-lister Dennis Hopper attended Derby multiple times in the 1990s and 2000s. The “Easy Rider” and “Speed” star was spotted enjoying a cigar on the fifth floor of the Skye Terrace in 2004, his reported last Derby visit.
Movie star Morgan Freeman was spotted in Churchill’s Skye Terrace and Eclipse Dining Room at the 1991 Derby.
• In 1991, Gen. Norman Schwarz-kopf was the Pegasus Parade grand marshal. Louisville was one of the famed general’s first stops after he returned home from the Persian Gulf War. On Derby Day, cheers could be heard erupting several times when Schwarzkopf was spotted on the deck of the fourth-floor Stakes Room.
• In his signature black shades, actor Jack Nicholson was on hand betting the ponies at the 1998 Run for the Roses. That same year “The Godfather” legend Robert Duvall and “Rocky” star Sylvester Stallone were also on hand.
• Then-Gov. George W. Bush, a year before he would become president, was a big hit at the Ken-tucky Derby in 2000. He was even snapped by a photographer in the Paddock giving a Louisville woman a kiss on the hand before present-ing a trophy to the winner of one of the day’s races. His date? Former President George H.W. Bush.
• In 2003, Academy Award-nom-inated actress Sigourney Weaver came to Churchill Downs. She told reporters she was putting her money on Atswhatimtalknbout, part-owned by her famous movie director friend, Steven Spielberg.
• Chubby Checker brought the “Twist” to the Derby City in 2004 when he was the grand marshal of the Pegasus Parade.
• Because of one VIP guest of the Barnstable Brown Gala, Louisville native Larry Birkhead would later find himself thrust into the national lime-light. It was at the 2004 bash that he first came face to face with Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith.
• Queen Elizabeth made history when she came to the 2007 Kentucky Derby as the first sitting British mon-arch to attend. Her Derby Day outfit? A lime green suit and matching hat with a hot-pink bow, and her trademark white gloves, of course.
• He might be one of the biggest names in late-night TV, but in 2007, Jimmy Fallon knew Louisville was the place to be on the first Saturday in May. After partying at the Barnstable Brown Gala, the “Saturday Night Live” alum kept the good times going when he hung out with some University of Louisville Sigma Chi fraternity broth-ers.
• KISS legend Gene Simmons caused a media frenzy when he came to the Barnstable Brown Gala and Kentucky Derby in 2007 with his wife, Shannon Tweed, and her sister, Tracy. The trio’s every move at the party and racetrack wase captured by the film crew from their A&E reality show, “Gene Simmons Family Jewels.”
• International bombshell Raquel Welch was a guest of the Barnstable Brown Gala in 2007.
• Years before Hugh Hefner tied the knot for the third time, the Play-boy legend and former girlfriends Holly Madison, Kendra Wilkinson and Bridget Marquardt were guests of the Barnstable Brown Gala in 2008. Cameras from their hit E! show, “The Girls Next Door,” captured their Lou-isville trip.
• The “Queen of Soul” Aretha Frank-lin did Derby in 2009.
• Domestic diva Martha Stewart said she had “a real Derby experi-ence” when she attended for the first time in the 2011 as guests of former Louisville Mayor Harvey Sloane and his wife, Kathy. She said the backside of Churchill Downs and a barbecue lunch at the western Louisville home of the sister of the local police officer who was escorting her around town were among the highlights of her trip.

Kentucky has been home to horse racing of one kind or another since the late 1700’s. When the Kentucky Derby first began in 1875, America had not yet discovered the automo-bile. Horse-and-buggy was the popu-lar mode of transportation. Today, the Kentucky Derby is the longest running sporting event in America. Along the way, traditions developed that give the race its own unique flavor. Every year thousands of people attend the annual “run for the roses” held at Churchill Downs while millions of others sit glued to their television sets.
Kentucky Derby Tradition #1: Fash-ionable Hats
To attend the Kentucky Derby, it is traditional for women to wear hats - the more outlandish the better. This tradition is a throw-back to England’s Royal Ascot traditions as embodied by Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. Wide-brimmed, gaudily adorned, the hats are a mainstay of the race.
Kentucky Derby Tradition #2: The Mint Julep
The Mint Julep has been the tra-ditional beverage of the Kentucky Derby for nearly 100 years. A mixture of 2 cups water and 2 cups of sugar heated to boiling for 5 minutes. Add 6-8 sprigs of fresh mint and refriger-
ate, covered, overnight. Mix one tablespoon of the mint syrup with 2 shots of your favorite Kentucky bourbon and pour over crushed ice. Add a fresh mint leaf for garnish. Now you’re ready to watch the race.
Kentucky Derby Tradition #3: The Garland of Roses
Winning the Kentucky Derby entitles the winner to the now infa-mous floral arrangement. It began in 1896 with an arrangement of pink and white roses being presented to the year’s winner. In 1904 the roses’ official color became red and current garland arrangement was adopted in 1932. In 1925, a columnist tagged the
race “The Run for the Roses” and it has been referred to as such ever since.
Kentucky Derby Tradition #4: Waiting for the Next Triple Crown Winner
With the Kentucky Derby be-ing the first of three races in the Triple Crown series, high hopes are on the winner of this race. Only 11 horses have succeeded in winning the Triple Crown while
45 have won 2 out of the 3. Of those 45, a scant 21 actually won the first two races, the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, making them viable contenders to go all the way only to lose the final race, the Belmont.
Horseracing is full of time-honored traditions and the Kentucky Derby exemplifies the best of these. Being fortunate enough to attend the race entails carrying out these traditions and enjoying your Kentucky Derby race day to the fullest. Hats on, mint julep in hand and.....They’re OFF!

“Is a bottle of wine ever really worth $100?”
This is a question I’m regularly asked by friends who aren’t obsessed with wine. My answer is always the same.
“Of course,” I begin. “For starters, there’s supply and demand -- bottles sell for what the market says they’re worth.”
“But to your real question,” I continue, “no one is dropping that sort of money simply because a wine tastes so good. On those special occasions when you splurge -- whether for a $25 bottle, a $50 bottle, or even something that costs $100 or more -- you’re hoping for something beyond deliciousness. You’re hoping for a wine that makes you think.”
Regardless of a wine’s price tag, this
answer helps explain how wine enthu-siasts approach wine. Those of us who obsess over what we drink aren’t just looking for something tasty; we’re looking for an experience. Whether a bottle costs $15 or $150, we’re hoping for something great. And a great wine makes you think.
This concept was made clearer last month while listening to Abe Schoener, an iconoclastic California winemaker, deliver a lecture in Washington, DC.
Until 1998, Schoener was a profes-sor of ancient Greek philosophy at St. John’s College in Maryland. That year, he headed to the Bay Area for a sab-batical and met John Kongsgaard, a Napa Valley vintner who was quickly gaining a reputation for making interest-ing wines. Kongsgaard’s children were interested in St. John’s, so the two men linked up. They quickly hit it off. Even though Schoener didn’t plan on staying in Northern California, he soon became Kongsgaard’s protégé.
Fast-forward 15 years, and Schoener is still in California. He makes wine as if he’s still a philosophy professor, now teaching students about the limits and possibilities of wine. Like a vinous Socrates, Schoener explores wine by constantly questioning established conventions.
Unsurprisingly, the results -- bottled as the Scholium Project -- are extremely unusual. The name is derived from the Greek word for “school” or “scholar,” so quite literally, the wines are a schol-arly endeavor. Some are hits; some are misses. All make you think.
Thanks to the wines -- and a cap-tivating personality -- Schoener has developed somewhat of a cult following. So he’s touring the country on a sold-out lecture series. In Washington, Schoener asked attendees to ponder several oil paintings from the National Gallery of Art as he discussed “precision and transpar-ency in winemaking.”
That Schoener’s lecture would spark a dialogue about the purpose of wine isn’t surprising. Nor is such a dialogue unusual. Consider the wisdom of leg-endary winemaker Jacques Lardière, who recently retired after 42 years with Maison Louis Jadot in Burgundy.
“When you drink wine, you must real-ize you are drinking something more than wine,” Lardière explained to a re-cent gathering of oenophiles in New York City. “It’s a very meditative beverage.”
That meditative element is what in-spires and fascinates wine enthusiasts.
Obviously, a delicious wine doesn’t have to make you think. Inexpensive
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, Pro-vençal Rosé, and reasonably priced Ar-gentine Malbec are just some examples of wines that are typically consumed thoughtlessly.
And there are many unappetizing wines that demand contemplation. For my palate, some skin-fermented whites and purposefully oxidized wines fit this bill. So do a few of Abe Schoener’s projects.
Great wines are both delicious and thought-provoking. That combination is what wine enthusiasts seek, regardless of price.
One might compare this pursuit to music. It’d be hard to contend that listen-ing to a song is worth much more than a dollar -- iTunes’ highest priced songs are $1.29. But virtually everyone is will-ing to pay a premium to see his favorite artist perform live. Bruce Springsteen’s newest album, “Wrecking Ball,” can be purchased for $13; tickets during his recent tour were priced at $98 each. At Springsteen concerts, attendees undoubtedly get their money’s worth.
Next time you pull a cork, think about what you’re drinking. Perhaps you’ll discover a great wine.

The Pageant of the Masters is arguably one of the most unique productions in the entire world. Every summer in Laguna Beach, California, audiences are amazed and en-chanted by ninety minutes of tableaux vivants (“living pictures”), incredibly faithful re-creations of classical and contemporary works of art, with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces. A live narrator is a guide through the story of each living picture accompa-nied by a full orchestra. In 2013, the Pageant of the Masters celebrates its 80th anniversary with the theme “The Big Picture” -adding a cinematic spin to its world-class presentation with classic masterpieces that inspired legendary filmmakers.
Long before the curtain fell on last summer’s enormously popular pro-duction, The Genius, Diane Challis Davy, director of the Pageant of the Masters, was busily formulating her ideas for 2013’s celebration of art in “living pictures” – tableaux vivants – titled “The Big Picture.” She’s excited that this summer will mark the 80th anniversary of living pictures being presented at the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach. But Challis Davy is also planning a tribute to the modern art of motion pictures and the ways in which the masterpieces of art his-tory have inspired and informed the movies.
When asked where she found her inspiration for the 2013 theme, Challis Davy laughed and replied, “In the bathtub!” She then went on to explain this was a reference to Busby Berkeley, the legendary Hollywood director famous for his extravagant and brilliantly-choreographed musi-
cal numbers in the 1930s. Berkeley, it seems, once told a reporter that his best ideas came to him while in the tub.
Challis Davy’s playful comment is offset by the se-riousness of her continuing devo-tion to the daunting logistics of putting on the Pageant. With its two casts of hundreds of vol-unteers, orches-tra, narrator and crew of backstage artists and techni-cians, the Pageant of the Masters is every bit as complex as a big-budget movie shoot, with the biggest difference being that a movie only has to get a shot right once, while the Pageant hits the stage live every night for nearly two months!
Challis Davy is quick to point out that masterpieces are once again included in the “coming attractions” of the 2013 Pageant. “We’ll have Ver-meer, Gainsborough, Michelangelo, Gerome, Seurat, Rodin, Norman Rockwell. Designers for both stage and screen look to paintings and sculpture for historical information and inspiration. I thought it would be a new twist for the Pageant to take a look back at the work of the Masters that inspired great works of cinema.”
As examples, THE BIG PICTURE will showcase how the genius of Mi-chelangelo found expression in “The Agony and the Ecstasy,” how Thomas Gainsborough’s portraits influenced Stanley Kubrick, and how the works of Jean-Leon Gerome can be seen in films by directors like David Lean and Ridley Scott. And “the Master of Suspense,” Alfred Hitchcock, will also merit special attention.
But, Challis Davy’s enthusiasm for the theme extends beyond film references. “What are movies but a series of still pictures?” she mused, “The Pageant is a series of still (but living) pictures. That seemed like an interesting connection to consider.”
Longtime Pageant scriptwriter Dan Duling concurred. “The Pageant’s combination of art and theater alters the way we look at art. In a way tab-leaux vivants were the original ‘freeze frames.’ And looking at masterpieces through the viewfinder of motion pictures provides fascinating food for thought.”
When asked if there were any selections for the upcoming show that she’d always wanted to produce, Challis Davy cited the chance to in-corporate memorable music from the movies – by Bernard Hermann, Alex North and other composers – and the chance to recreate a fresco by Michel-angelo from the Sistine Chapel. On a lighter note, she said she’s looking forward to staging “a loving tribute to the Chicago Art Institute, courtesy of director John Hughes and his film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”
Of course, THE BIG PICTURE has a secondary focus, the 80th anniversary of “living pictures” at the Festival of Arts. That’s certainly worthy of celebration, and Challis Davy intends to revisit this remark-able history by highlighting some of the ways in which the Pageant has benefited from its connections with Hollywood celebrities. And, of course, the show will once again conclude with its traditional finale, Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” In 1936, that truly became “the big picture” that put the Pageant on the national map.
Everyone associated with the production understands the Pageant
wouldn’t be possible without that spirit of volunteer dedication. As Challis Davy acknowledges, their dedica-tion and loyalty are the remarkable engines that sustain the Pageant. “I’m lucky to be surrounded by people who love the hard work it takes to produce a very elaborate show,” she said. “I get inspiration from the scriptwriter, staff, composers, and from the scores of enthusiastic research volunteers who come up with great suggestions!”

A reAlity For At-risK teens
Four Orange County-based non-profits teamed up to host the sixth an-nual ‘Belle of the Ball’ event at Orange Coast College. Girls Inc. of Orange County, Women Helping Women (WHW)/Men2Work, Orangewood Children’s Foundation and Orange Coast College collaborated to provide a day of em-powerment which allowed over 330 at-risk teens and foster youth to receive the necessities in order to attend their prom or another special event in style and gleaming with confidence.
The day started with breakfast and an inspiring kick-off message, followed by pre-prom shopping for their dress and accessories; a workshop on make-up, skin care, and hair styling for their big night, an interactive workshop on media literacy and fostering a positive body image; and a class on personal branding and presenting yourself professionally on social media. The entire day is provided absolutely free of charge to all attending girls with the help of over 300 volunteers from the Orange County community and Orange Coast College, who hosts the event each year.
“It is important to equip our girls with the knowledge and confidence they will need to be successful beyond their prom night,” explained Veronica Esc-obedo, Director of Program Services at Girls Inc. of Orange County. “Today isn’t just about giving these girls a pretty dress; it’s about showing these girls that regardless of who you are or what you look like, every girl is beautiful.”
Tina Aldatz, founder of Foot Petals and Orange County resident, delivered the opening ceremonies’ keynote address to the 600+ attendees. “Don’t let your circumstances define the way you lead the rest of your life,” said Aldatz. “Today is an opportunity to learn, receive and continue to grow.”
Over the course of eight months, a twenty-five person event committee consisting of representatives from each of the four agencies pooled their resources and secured over $500,000 worth of in-kind and financial spon-sorships for the event. Top sponsors included DSW Shoes, Alfred Angelo, Cookie Lee, Hoyu America, Physician’s Formula, UPS, and National Charity League (Newport-Harbor). All in all, the teens were provided with a selection of 2,019 dresses, 1,224 pairs of shoes, 283 purses, 1,301 pieces of jewelry and 400 make-up goodie bags. One Belle exclaimed, “I feel like a princess!”
Belle of the Ball was established in 2008 as a day of self-esteem for at-risk girls throughout Orange County. The goal was to allow young girls the opportunity to attend their high school prom despite their financial or social situations. Through the years, the event has served more than 1,100 girls and continues to grow.

take them to see something really BIG, Take a half day trip to travel back in time on a real honest to goodness battleship, the “Big Stick”, the USS Iowa stationed in nearby San Pedro, Ca. just under the Vincent Thomas Bridge. Not far from the harbor freeway and 405, this battleship was in combat in WWII, the Korean War and the Cold War and is still available for Naval duty til 2020. It is the only Battleship to patrol the Atlantic arena. It is berthed just off Harbor Blvd in San Pedro. The ship is open for self-guided tours plus several retired Naval Personnel available to answer questions.
Built in 1940, the USS IOWA served our country for over 50 years. Designated the “World’s Greatest Naval Ship” due to her big guns, heavy armor, fast speed, longevity and modernization, she kept pace with technology. During her more than 50 years in service, IOWA has welcomed and escorted our nation’s Commander in Chief on many occasions. No other battle-ship in our nation’s history has been host to more U.S. Presidents including FDR, Harry Truman and Ronald Reagan and George H. Bush. The Iowa is one of the last Battleships available to tourists includ-ing her sister ships Missouri, New Jersey
and Wisconsin.The USS Iowa is open 7 days per week,
except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Hours of operation are: September through May: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM with the last ticket sold at 4:00 PM. June through August: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM with the last ticket sold at 4:00 PM. The tour cost $18 for Adults (ages 18-61), $10 for children (ages 6-17, $15 for Seniors (ages 62+) and Active/Ret/Reserve Military with ID with the proceeds going to maintain and preserve the Pacific Battleship Center. USS IOWA is not cur-rently ADA accessible. However, accessibil-ity for disabled guests will be improved over the next year. There are many obstacles on the ship such as uneven decking, high door frames and many sets of stairs that are safety hazards. For that reason, no wheelchairs are allowed aboard the ship and those using canes and walkers should use extra caution. Visiting the USS IOWA can be a very rewarding family experience and children are welcomed on board! Par-ents must closely supervise their children at all times. Strollers are not allowed on board the USS IOWA. For small children, the use of a front carrier (Baby Bjorn-type carrier) is suggested. There are several stairs and obstacles on the tour. Children may not be carried up stairs unless they are in a front-facing carrier. If they are not in a carrier and
cannot climb the stairs safely on their own, then the child and a guardian must remain on the main deck of the ship.
Parking is $1 an hour in her huge park-ing lot.The self-guided tour will take about 2.5 hours and is historically enlightening. One starts with photos against several different backdrops of the ship that can be purchased at the end of the tour. You proceed up the gangplank to the main deck where Turret #2 is sealed as a Memorial to the April 19th, 1989 flareback accident that took 47 sailor lives. Visitors proceed to the Wardroom where Officers would eat and enjoy their time off and go up a stairway to the famous FDR & Captain’s cabin to see where world dignitaries were entertained and the only bathtub at sea. From there, it’s up two levels to the smaller guns and
the Flag Bridge that controls the ship. The tour then heads down to the aft Main Deck, passing the after main battery guns and en-tering a hatch to tour the crews’ Galley and Mess deck area below on the 2nd Deck. There could have been as many as 8,000 meals prepared each day for large crews during World War 2. Proceeding further aft visitors will be entertained with several short movies reflecting Iowa’s history, the recent refurbishment efforts, and the tows from Northern California to Los Angeles. There is a well-stocked Gift Shop on the lower deck. The tour ends on the Aft deck with many photo opportunities. This is a big ship with quite a detailed history.
