Chemical ReactionsExplore exciting chemical reactions! In this lab-based class, students will conduct chemical reactions, identify the basic signs of chemical reactions and have a lot of fun! Heat, light, color change and even explosions will be explored in a safe, supervised setting. Students will be introduced to the basics of writing and classifying chemical equations. This class provides an excellent introduction to high school chemistry! (Ms. Filomeno)

Creative WritingStudents will use their creative skills to write different types of found poetry, a type of poetry created by taking words, phrases, and sometimes whole passages from other sources and reframing them as poetry to create a new piece of work. By the end of the session, students will see that poetry can be found anywhere. (Ms. Garcia)

Food ScienceLet’s investigate the biology of foods! Students will explore the structure and function of the four classes of macromolecules: carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. They will learn how to test for their presence in various foods. Then, using household chemicals, they will extract, isolate and observe DNA from strawberries. (Mrs. Miller)

Freedom and the Bill of RightsNazareth offers students numerous opportunities to explore the vast amounts of information at their disposal using technology. Students then create projects that articulate the conclusions they’ve drawn. This session will challenge students to define what it means “to be free” after studying various sources that cover the Bill of Rights. The students will come to consensus through debate and collaboration in order to creatively share their conclusion. (Mr. Letcher)

Lit and FilmGrade school students can enjoy a mini-version of Nazareth’s popular Lit and Film elective. They will learn about the five basic types of camera angles and then engage in an activity using iPads to take images of objects using the five angles to determine the effect of each. Students will examine movie stills and a short film clip to discuss the impact that camera angles have on the creation of film. (Ms. Paliatka)

The Physics of FlightDid you ever wonder how a drone maneuvers in the air? Learn the physics behind flight through a series of fun, hands-on activities. We will explore why we need air pressure to keep us from exploding and why it is possible to make a penny fly in the air without touching it. We’ll also observe some unexpected results when a stream of air blows past various objects. (Dr. Zasadzinski)

Shark TankStudents will have an opportunity to harness their entrepreneurial abilities by entering our “makers lab” and creating their own product from materials provided. Then, students will be asked to pitch their ideas to our Shark Tank. A winner will be chosen based on creativity, marketing and product utility. This session is a great chance to utilize skills in creative thinking, communication and even engineering! (Mr. Gonzalez)

Spanish Fun and GamesWho doesn’t love to play games? Students will learn numbers and colors playing classic games such as Uno, Jenga and Bingo in addition to making a project to take home. During the class, students will also learn and practice basic exchanges in Spanish to introduce themselves, borrow materials and be polite. Ultimately students will discover that the study of a world language can be a whole lot of fun. (Ms. Laguna)

Tanti Auguri! An Italian Birthday PartyIt’s everyone’s birthday today! By the end of this Italian language session, students will be able to tell everyone the date of their birthday as well as say and sing “Happy Birthday” to others in ITALIAN! Tortini per tutti (cupcakes for everyone)! (Mr. Mullen)
