    The RoyalAustralianNavy Today

    The Royal Austral ian Navy goes int o the 1970s

    with a strength unequalled in peacetime.Wi th the complet ion of a sh ip-b u i ld ing pro

    gramme in 1970 begun in the sixties, the

    A us tr a lia n Flee t w ill in c lu de over 5 0 sh ips,

    inc lud ing an a i rcra f t carr ier , s ix destroyers,

    s ix destroyer escorts, four submar ines, mine

    sweepers, m inehunters, patrol boats and vari

    ous suppo rt sh ips, as well as a i rcra f t o f the

    Fleet Air Arm.

    New ships on the drawing board include a

    combat support ship, which wil l replenish Fleet

    ships with a wide variety of stores, fuel and

    a m m u n i t ion at sea; a new oceanographic ship

    and a small hydrographic ship.

    In addition, the R.A.N. is undertaking a pre

    l iminary design study for a new c lass of l ight

    destroyer a re la t ive ly smal l destroyer w i th

    a high top speed, long range and anti-aircraft,

    ant i -submar ine and sur face capabi l i t ies.

    Today there are over 17,000 off icers and men

    in the Perm anent Naval Forces. They serve in

    sh ips and shore estab l ishments, both in Aus tra

    l ia and overseas, including Vietnam, where the

    R.A.N. has one of i ts destroyers serving with

    the U.S. Seventh Fleet. A Navy hel icop ter

    fl ight and Navy clearance divers are also

    serving in Vietnam.

    Navy in Vietnam

    the Royal Austral ian Navy has main -t ai ned a destroyer in Vietnam since

    March, 1967. These ships, l ike HMAS

    PERTH, pictured here, served w i th the

    United States Seventh Fleet and havebeen used in a variety of roles, includ-

    ing g unf i re support , in terd ic t ion o f

    enemy coastal supply traffic and escort
