Doing God’s Work

“Happy Summer” to all of our Xavier families!

As it is each summer, the Xavier campus is once again alive

with activity. In addition to the many camps, clinics and

summer workouts taking place in our activities programs,

we are hosting our first “Summer Academy” for elementary

age students. It’s also that time of year for our buildings and

grounds crew to spruce up the facility for the upcoming school year. Our administra-

tion and office staff continue to plan for the return of approximately 760 Saints in the

fall. Our baseball and softball teams are training and competing throughout the sum-

mer. And many of our faculty will be in the building preparing for their classes.

All of the work going on this summer is driven by the belief we continually

share with all of you, “We either get better or worse every day; we never stay the

same.” We have an incredible school and school community but it is impera-

tive that we persist in striving for improvement. I’m proud of the effort our fac-

ulty, staff and administration have continually demonstrated to do just that.

Many of us have lives that we consider to be very blessed. Howe-ver, I think it is safe to say that very few of us realize the full extent of our blessings. I, along with 30 other Xavier students and cha-perones, had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala June 4th through the 13th. Here, we had an eye-opening, humbling, and faith-filled experience as we reached out to a needy community.

During the 9 days we spent in Guatemala, we completed various service projects and activities that gave way to direct, memorable, and touching encounters with underprivileged people. Our trip and activities were organized through The God’s Child Project, which is an educational development organization that is dedi-cated to “breaking the chains of poverty through education and formation”. Our focus the entire trip was to work together as a team to help the people of Guatemala the best we could by allowing

The Cedar Rapids Metro Catholic Schools will be hosting their first annual Midsummer 10k and 5k! The event will be on July 21, 2012 with the 5k starting at 8am and the10k starting at 9am. A $100 prize will be awarded to the top overall male and female fini-shers of each race. The top 3 male and female finishers will be awarded a medal. If you compete in both the 5k and the 10k you will be awarded a special medal. Bring out the entire family and help support the Cedar Rapids Metro Catholic Schools. Cedar Rapids Metro Catholic Schools prepare to host their First Annual Midsummer 10k and 5k!

Athletic PhysicalsFamily Physicians of Cedar Rapids will be offering Athletic Physicals for Xavier students (current 9th - 12th graders) on July 30, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. in the Xavier High School Health Services Center. Physicals will cost $30 per student. Checks may be written to Family Physicians of Cedar Rapids.

Students should wear casual clothes and bring a copy of the physical form found on the Xavier website www.xaviersaints.org. The first section of the form should be comple-ted by a parent/guardian prior to the physical. Family Physicians will give a copy of the completed physical form to Xavier personnel and you will be given an original for your records.

Athletic physicals are required annually by the state of Iowa prior to competing in school sponsored athletics. Physicals will be valid for the entire 2012-2013 school year. Contact Pam Barta in the Activities Office with questions: 294-6635 x302 or pam.barta@xaviersaints.org

Robotics Team Secures GrantXavier is the recipient of a $275 grant from Rockwell Collins for the First Tech Challenge robotics teams, Xpendables. The grant will cover the cost of registering the team for the 2012-2013 season.

Rockwell Collins recognizes the value of forming positive relationships with students who will become the next generation of engineers and innovators. That is why they have teamed with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) to dramatically increase FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) teams throughout Iowa and across the nation. The mission trip to Memphis was a great

success! 16 students and 3 adults traveled

to Memphis TN in early June to participate

in Catholic Heart Work Camp. They spent

the week working on various projects

which included such things as painting,

interacting with children, yard work, wheel

chair ramp construction, sorting and orga-

nizing items for charitable outreach and a

variety of other tasks. The evenings were

spent deepening faith and coming to a

more full realization of how Christ is present

in all people. A big thank you to our adult

chaperones, Dawn Feltman and Gretchen

Swanke. Their willingness to attend made

the trip possible. If you are interested in at-

tending Catholic Heart Work Camp, watch

the announcements in the fall for the 2013

location and date.

Juniors, be sure to include a Kairos week-

end. The Kairos retreat weekends for the

2012/2013 school year are Oct 25-28, Jan

24-27 and April 18-21. They fill up quickly,

so turn in your application early. Appli-

cations will be available the first week of

school. We are still collecting applications

for Kairos leaders, if you are an interested

senior please pick up an application in the

campus ministry office or e-mail Jody Esker

From the Principal’s Corner (continued from page 1)

As our staff reflects on this past year and evaluates what we’ve done, we will continue to

look for ways to improve all areas of our school. Be assured that the concerns that our

students and their parents have brought to our attention this year will be considered

during that process.

As we often do heading into summer, this year we say goodbye to a few faculty members

who will be leaving Xavier. Mr. Jeff Bieber (Vocal Music), Mr. Dennis Ferguson (English),

Ms. Kathleen Glady (Math), Mr. Matt Jenkins (Guided Study) and Mr. Dan Swanson (Social

Studies), will be moving on to new challenges. Also, Mrs. Sara Jo Merkey (Spanish) has

completed her year of service filling in for Mrs. Richmond who was on a one year leave.

In order to fill our vacated positions, we have moved a few staff members to new respon-

sibilities and have also hired four new teachers. Miss McDonald will move from Theology

to English. Mrs. May will move from Campus ministry to full-time Theology teaching. Mr.

Farrell will teach both Theology and Social Studies. Mrs. Streif will move from English to

Guided Study. Our new faculty members include Ms. Sarah Hayes (English), Mrs. Jaclyn

Hussey (Vocal Music), Mr. Nick Satterlee (Theology and Campus Ministry), and Mrs. Sara

Whitt (Math). As the transition of these new folks proceeds, I know I can count on the

entire Xavier community to make them feel welcome and to offer them the support they

need to become a part of our school “family.”

Change is a good reminder to all of us that we are simply curators of Xavier High School.

We are a dynamic and ever-changing institution which carries on a tradition of spread-

ing the Gospel message and preparing young people for fulfilling lives. It is important to

remember that while the names and faces may change, the mission remains the same.

My best to you and your families for a safe and enjoyable summer.

From the Trainer: Muscle CrampsBy Heather Boyer

Anyone who has experienced a muscle

cramp can attest to the fact that it can be

quite painful. Muscle cramps occur when

muscles involuntarily contract and cannot

relax. Muscle cramps can last anywhere

from a few seconds to an hour. Also, it is not

uncommon for a cramp to recur multiple

times until it finally goes away.

Cramps are extremely common, but it is not

known exactly why muscles cramps devel-

op. Insufficient stretching before exercise,

exercising in the heat, poor circulation, ac-

cumulation of lactic acid, medications (di-

uretics), poor nutrition and muscle fatigue

may all play a role. Imbalances in the levels

of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chlo-

ride, calcium and phosphate) in the blood

can also lead to muscle cramps.

Most cramps can be stopped if the muscle

can be stretched, gently massaged, and flu-

id/electrolyte replacement given.

Cramps can be prevented by stretching

before and after activity, along with an ad-

equate warm-up and cool down. Good hy-

dration before, during and after the activity

is important as well. Magnesium (found in

bananas, apricots, nuts, soybeans, meat/

fish, grains, and pickle juice), Vitamin E and

some medications (IBU, Quinine) may help

as well for the prevention of cramps.

The projects that we participated in included building a total of six of the project’s specially designed houses for needy families, visiting children at an orphanage, serving dinner at a homeless shelter, and traveling to an isolated commu-nity to distribute clothes to people that were living with close to nothing, just as many others in their country do.

Our service team was moved and inspired throughout our trip by the reactions of the people we helped. The houses we built for entire families were no bigger than an average-sized bedroom, yet the families were so grateful to have a clean, safe, and livable space that some were moved to tears when we presented their new homes to them. The children we visited at the orphanage were energetic, smiling, and happy, even if we were simply sitting next to them, blowing bubbles, or having a casual conversation. Almost all of our encounters with the people of Guatemala throughout the whole trip went the same way; an exhibition of immense appreciation for any kind of assistance or company we offered, no matter how simple. Guate-malan people seem to be happy with less and appre-ciate the important things in life. Our service team developed a better understanding of the definition of happiness and a more humble perspective of our own lifestyles.

For anyone seeking a fulfilling experience, I would definitely recommend any sort of similar mission trip. Our service team left with irreplaceable memories that will truly stay with us forever! I feel very blessed to have gone on this trip, and because of it my eyes have been opened to how fortunate we all really are. -Nicole Draker, Class of 2013

Catholic Heart Work Camp was an amazing experience. We got to serve God, learn more about ourselves, and meet other Catholic teens. The worksite Xavier visited this year was Memphis, Tennessee. Xavier took seventeen students and three adult leaders on this wonderful faith journey. We all were able to grow closer through our work and prayer. Service and faith are both emphasized by CHWC.

Every morning started with an inspiring program. Groups then went to their individual worksites. The work on each site was different. Some of the tasks involved were helping fix up homes for the needy, restoring churches, or watching children in need. During lunch breaks on the site, there was prayer time with one’s small group. Each night, there was another very spiritual program. It reminded all of the campers to focus on their goal for the week: To Serve God. Along with that, at the end of each day the group from Xavier gathered in the sleeping area to share in a prayerful manner our experiences from the day at our individual worksites. Mass and the Rosary were also offered every evening. I would strongly encourage Xavier students to take part in this amazing experience next summer.

Girls Soccer Makes State HistorySmiles weren‘t hard to come by on Saturday, June 9, 2012! The Xavier Girls Soccer team defeated North Scott 3-1 in the 2A State Cham-pionship, making state history as the first team in Iowa to win seven consecutive state championships. The team eagerly gathered into a circle around the Iowa Girls‘ High School Athletic Union emblem for postgame photos, amid hugs and shouts of joy that were equal parts exhilaration and an overwhelming sense of accomplishment

“We went out with a bang this year, just like we did every year,“ said Xavier senior Annie Dale during an interview with Source Media. “This year being done, I‘m so proud of the way our team finished. Being able to hold a trophy for my fourth year in a row feels amazing. Our team worked so hard for it.“

Kayla Armstrong, a XHS junior stated, “It says alot, not only about our team, but all the teams before it. The preparation that goes into each season. Our coaching staff and the Xavier community.“

The Booster Club golf outing was a smashing success! On Monday, June 11, 168 Xavier High School Booster Club supporters and golf enthusiasts enjoyed a day of fun, sun and golf at Elm-crest Country Club. The annual fundraiser, developed to provide additional funding for Xavier High School academics, athletics and fine arts, raised more than $22,000 this year!

Before the golfers took to the course, they were treated to lunch courtesy of Panera Bread. Full stomachs undoubtably fueled Doug Ropp, Rich Gradoville, Bernie Schuller and Mark Frette to become winners of the 2012 Best Shot contest. Their worthy adversaries, but runners-up none-theless, were Dave Thinnes, Tim O’Brien, Jim McPartland and Tim Ingwersen. Elsewhere on the course, Jim McPartland put his putting skills to the test, and took home a $100 cash prize and Putting Contest winner bragging rights.

After the golfing festivities wrapped up participants were treated to a reception and live auc-tion, which was aided by some very generous bidders including Kinch Donithan, high bidder on the original Zach Johnson print; Tim Ingwersen, high bidder on the Zach Johnson personal-ized 2007 Masters Flag; Dick Galligan, high bidder on the neon Saints Helmet; and Doug Feltes high bidder and proud new owner of the keg refrigerator. Meanwhile, raffle prize winner Brian Donnelly went home with a new set of Wilson irons, and Jim Kapsch got hooked up with the latest technology via his New Generation iPad.

The Xavier High School Booster Club extends its sincere appreciation to everyone who partici-pated in the 2012 Golf Outing. This event would not have been possible without the generos-ity of the participants, sponsors, donors, and volunteers. Thank you!

Tony Philips, a lifelong Catholic, had a storybook childhood in Iowa. After experimenting with alcohol and drugs throughout high school his substance abuse grew and his life spiraled out of control. He lived in darkness for over a decade, in and out of homeless shelters, battling addictions, struggling with thoughts of suicide, in and out of jail until his faith was revived through a deep personal encounter with God. Come hear Tony’s powerful testimony to how the touch of God led to his radically changed life.
